Stumbling Onto a Religious Mystery in an Abandoned Mine

- Did somebody die in this abandoned mine? Is that why is the main tunnel is blocked off with a heavily timbered, impassable ore chute that's only twenty feet underground? And why is a large, wooden box positioned behind the chute? Is it an old ore cart or is it a barricade to prevent unwitting explorers from falling into an extremely deep drill hole or shaft? And why are there so many candles in the mine depicting the likeness of Saint Jude who is the patron saint of lost causes, desperate situations, and hospitals? And why would somebody staple a banana to the tunnel wall? Was that some kind of ritualistic offering? These are the questions that this small, unassuming, abandoned diatomaceous earth mine brought forth in me as I explored it. I'd like to hear your theories and thoughts about what I found in this strange mine and what it all might mean.

I can tell you that while some people do use those candles as a kind of prayer (ie, for St Jude to intercede to God for them), those candles also are useful as a safe, wind resistant light source. In my area we have a problem with homeless individuals stealing the bottle candles from our Catholic church (which don't have a picture on them, they are religious devotional candles that are made of wax poured into a tall bottle with a wick in the middle) to use as light when they are camping out. If someone wanted to sit in the mine for some purpose it's a cheap light source solution to get some St Jude candles (San Judas Tadeo= St Jude Thaddeus) from the Hispanic aisle of the grocery store. So, I don't assume that religious bottle candles are always used for religious purposes. I could also mention that strings of paper flags like that are typical of how Hispanics at my church decorate in a celebratory way. For instance they go all-out for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with strings of rectangular pennants like that strung all the way across the church, in Mexican flag colors of green, white and red, plus a zillion zillion flowers (which are a part of the story of Saint Juan Diego and his encounters with Mary). To me that mine implies someone Hispanic was there, or a small group of people, who could be Catholic but not necessarily there for a religious purpose. Could just have camped in there some time, maybe had a little party.

I... shudder to even think it could even be something far worse. Like something along the lines of insulting religion. I don't believe in the weird occult stuff, but... I dunno. While Elizabeth may very well be correct (chances are, she is), However practicing the bad occult stuff has been gaining so much more momentum as of late (i.e. the last 20 years now), and it's getting quite ballsy. Weather it's used for something mundane, peacefully religious, or with ill will of the occult kind, it is best not to remove it from the location. Hell, don't even touch it.
Like I typed, I don't believe in that stuff... but there have been a few instances where I've seen, or heard something. To this day, with as rational a thought as I can muster, I cannot find any real way to explain it away, nor physical evidence to show it even happened. If you find anymore of those kinds of items, toys, or even small bags, avoid them.

Good hearing from you again! I was thinking sink hole, too. But it seems so perfectly circular in shape. The hole is basically over where the ore chute would've been, so maybe that explains it.

Great video as always Frank! That is definitely a strange mine, I was surprised by the ore chute location and the fact that the surface was close. If that box was used as a barrier for a drill hole, it predates the ore chute, and again, why an ore chute in that location? Add to the mix, the flags, stapled pepper or banana and votive candle, definitely strange. It looks like you had a fantastic evening as well as location to camp, desert camping looks amazing compared to camping in the north east. I have to ask, how many miles are on the Corolla now? This mine definitely is strange, and I may go back there and widen that gap next to the chute to squeeze in there and see what’s further down the tunnel. That wooden box is also very intriguing. I wonder what’s in it? Human remains? Pieces of diatomaceous earth? A drill hole going down vertically hundreds of feet? Or perhaps nothing?

it is VERY possible someone passed away in that mine. Mining accidents were pretty common. and Yes, it does seem like a Shrine, that was the impression I got as well.-----> THUMBS UP!!
I think you’re right about that! I’m curious what’s in that large wooden box that’s behind the ore chute. As I’ve mentioned in a couple other replies, I may go back there at some point and widen that gap and try to get into that tunnel behind the chute.

This reminds me of the holiday hispanic's celebrate called Day of the Dead where they make altars and offerings for their loved ones that have died. They make altars with their loved ones favorite foods and put things they loved in there. They have candles and decorated paper hanging in the walls. Perhaps an hispanic worker died there and a loved one made this to remember and honor him.

I knew those little flags looked familiar to me for some reason. Yes, you and another viewer have mentioned that similar flags have been used at Mount Everest, and that's where I recognize them from. This was a strange little mine. And I may go back and try to widen that gap by the ore chute so that I can squeeze through there and check the rest of it out. I was really curious to see if there was any objects inside the box/cart in between that small gap. (Guess we'll never know!) It definitely seems like they made an effort to block the chute and cover that hole, there must be a reason.
I had a strange feeling about the entrance, perhaps they gathered and left tumbleweeds at the entrance to deter anybody else from coming in once they departed.
I think you're right on the money! I believe a miner fell through the drill/sink hole to his death, so they blocked up the hole as best as they could. It's possible the miners death closed the mine permanently, due to unsafe working conditions. Perhaps his family members or loved ones went back there to a light a candle for him.
It would make sense there were two candles as are usually used at a shrine or altar. It is my guess a picture of the deceased sat between both candles, then was removed after a ritual had taken place or prayers had been said.
As for the flags, colours mean many things in various cultures/religions but in this situation with the evidence presented I'm almost 100% this is what they represent.
Yellow: Faith/Anointing.
Green: Life/Wealth.
Purple: Mediator/Wealth
Wine: New Birth/Mercy
White(Grey): Blessedness/Purity.
I think we've only scratched the surface of this mystery, but that's my take on it. Really nice campfire, the sound of wood cracking and wind blowing would knock me out! Thanks again for another great video.

@@AbandonedMines11 Had a WONDERFUL memorial weekend, did our yearly tribute to the fallen, then had a cookout and as far as summer goes, it's going lol, i'm not a fan of the extreme heat, i'm fine til about 105 then it's just too much, idk with my breathing issues the dry heat is killer, i lived in sarasota florida a while back for a year and the humidity really helped with my breathing where the dry heat just sucks you dry, but i've live out here almost my whole life off and on and beside the extreme heat months i LOVE it out here, you ever come out to vegas and have time on your hands, bbq and beers at my house on me !
I grew up back east and remember the summers were always so humid and sticky. I really enjoy the dry heat in the desert and love being out there. I know most people think that’s crazy, but that’s just how I feel about it. Everybody has their preferences regarding climate, though. I might feel different about the desert heat if I lived in it full-time like you do. When I go out for three or five days on a camping trip, I find it to be tolerable. Maybe living in it 24/7 might be a different story.
@@AbandonedMines11 The dry heat is better that's for sure but not when you have breathing problems, when i was younger it'd be 118 out and i'd be out running around in it no worry at all, funny how getting older with health issues throws a monkey wrench into things lol.

In Mexico them decoration's and candles are used for religious ceremonies when they reached a certain amount of work that's done to give thanks to the Lord for The protection given to then to reach that point and also a way of asking for more protection to be able to finish without any casualties.

Definitely will do. However, I don’t think I’ll be going back to this mine and trying to chip away at that gap to make it bigger. I’ve heard that diatomaceous earth is very dangerous to inhale into your lungs due to the dust that it forms.

Hey, Ronnie! It was rather strange to have a mine tunnel completely blocked off with an ore chute that wasn’t very far underground to begin with. Lots of cold air in that mine which indicates some depth, so I may try to go back and widen that gap next to the chute so I can get into the tunnel. Yes, the desert skies at night can be amazing if you’re far enough away from metropolitan areas. Out here in Southern California, we have to deal with the light pollution from Las Vegas.

The chute went up on an incline, but it's so close to the surface that I just don't understand it. Makes no sense. The circular hole is also intriguing. Sink hole or a drill hole? I think I need to go back to this one and widen that gap by the ore chute and get behind there. Lots of cold air in this one, so that suggests depth.

My first thought when i see a banana stapled to a mines wall is POT
Definitely need to go back with a pick and a hammer and open that up a bit there to get by the ore chute and check that space out. Often times there’s space behind ore chutes but it stops shortly. Either way it’s worth the effort to check it out.
I may go back and do that one of these days. There was a lot of cold air inside the tunnel which, I think, suggests that the tunnel went in pretty far. If not that, then there is a drill hole or a vertical shaft of some depth inside that wooden box.

I know this is pretty random but I'd pay you to go on an abandoned mine trip with you. This stuff is really cool, you seem to know a lot.
I certainly don't know as much as I should, but thanks for the compliment. A lot of this is just going out and getting experience going into as many abandoned mines as one can over the years. I've been doing it for 14 years or so. However, I need to learn a lot more about underground geology and stuff like that. Even my mining knowledge is limited at this late date! So, yeah -- let's meet up somewhere!

There are many strange places along our Oregon coast as well as a secondary Area 51 type base hidden around van duzer I think it’s called national park
I guess they closed the mine with that ore chute, very strange, if there is airflow in the tunnel there should be anther opening, but if there was a accident that entrance must be blocked aswel i guess, a mine full of riddles lol
There wasn’t so much airflow as there was just a presence of a lot of cold air which must be coming from somewhere. I’m almost certain that wooden box behind the chute is a collar for either a drill hole or some kind of vertical shaft. That must be where all the cold air is coming from. For I know in Southeast South Dakota there is no mines except for open gravel. And theyvare all open pits. Now I do believe over in the blackhills on the Westside of the state there is. I’ve only encountered rain two or three times over the last 10 years or so that I’ve been camping out in the desert. I’m glad that the desert doesn’t get a lot of rainfall! Certainly increases the odds that you’ll have nice weather. It also helps to look at the forecast, too, before heading out! LOL

What happens if you're in a mine and a 6.5 earthquake manifest itself.?
I’ve done a little research on this, believe it or not. From what I’ve heard from other people who’ve been underground when an earthquake happened, the earthquake is not noticeable. Doesn’t that sound counterintuitive, though? The shockwave travels underground very rapidly but it is the resulting shaking on the surface that goes on for a long time.
Please go back and further explore this mine....you cant leave us hanging like this :-)

If I'm in the area again (which is very likely), I probably will try to widen that six-inch gap by the ore chute. However, I don't want to unintentionally cause a collapse. The amount of cold air I felt in there suggests that the tunnel went in pretty far OR there is a deep drill hole inside that wooden box structure.
Could be a drill hole to attempt rescue of someone or children trapped in mine hence saint Jude candle?
That’s a very good guess, Derek. Everything about this particular mine is very mysterious. I would like to go back and try to get behind that wooden ore chute at the bottom of the tunnel, but I heard diatomaceous earth is very dangerous to inhale due to the nature of its dust. It’s like inhaling broken glass, apparently. I would definitely need to suit up for further exploration in this mysterious mine.

The whole mine was strange. I may go back and try to get past that ore chute by widening the gap. Lots of cold air in there which suggests some depth.
Imagine earthquakes hit when mining. Maybe they used the brake fluid to help squeeze through them small openings."put some more fluid on my back Slim"-haha.... thanx4sharing
That was pretty funny about using the brake fluid to aid in getting through the narrow squeezes. I’m surprised there’s not a big collapse in that tunnel due to the 6.5 earthquake having occurred there a year ago. The epicenter was only a mile away, so that area got shaken pretty strongly. What I didn’t show was that the state government installed a seismological monitoring station not too far away from this mine. The area is still experiencing aftershocks to this day. They just had a 4.0 aftershock about 10 days ago in that same area! It’s still seismologically active and therefore of great interest to seismologists, I guess.

I've seen prayer flags just like that in Asia that were used to ward off or seal in demons or evil spirits but yours were blank.....or faded?

Totally understandable about the claustrophobia. Anybody who is claustrophobic probably wouldn’t enjoy exploring abandoned mines at all. We do get ourselves into some tight spaces underground. At least this way you can still experience all the underground adventure without having to leave the safety or comfort of your living room sofa.
More than likely that stuff was placed there to prevent people from getting in there to prevent potential lawsuits.
I'm assuming you are talking about the wooden ore chute that is totally blocking the tunnel. You have a good theory there! It really makes no sense that the miners would install an ore chute there because it's not too far below the surface. Ore chutes like that are are always deep in a mine and lead up into large, cavernous voids called stopes. The whole thing really is a mystery -- including that wooden box that is behind the chute. There was a surprising amount of cold air back there which suggests depth. I may get back there one of these days and try to get behind that chute and into the tunnel beyond. Thanks for your comment!

@@MeanManu Light travels a long way in the desert, which is partly why, and there is often low light pollution. Especially if it's a large piece of flat country.
Yeah those are definitely Tibetan prayer flags. My moms a Buddhist and has em all over her garden. Weird, that there’s Buddhist prayer flags and Christian candles all jumbled together, curious indeed.

The candles are a Mexican thing they love to set them up in rocks and caves. I've seen it a few times around my area of Northern California.
Have any good recommendations for cave exploring? I just recently moved over by Susanville. A local friend turned me on to some ice caves near eagle lake in the lava flow from Mt Lassen. Scattered all down the slope towards the lake if you get the chance to explore! Doesn't look like there's any traffic there at all. Super rocky though if you go out there. No 4wd needed but you'll have to park down below on a shoulder.

@@AbandonedMines11 There is something next to the candle, which looks like a scoop or a spoon. I am not sure if it is part of a piece of metal it is lying on. Around here heroin addicts will often heat their mixture in something which looks like that, which unfortunately may make sense in conjunction with the candle.
However, I'm 50/50 on whether it is that or something that looks like that
I think you’re just seeing a rock there that vaguely resembles a spoon. I took a screenshot and blew it up, and that’s what it looks like to me. If there had been a spoon there, I would’ve seen it because I picked up that particular candle.
@@AbandonedMines11 Possibly. It looks artificial to me, so it has either had a hole drilled in it or is a piece of metal. Unfortunately, I have seen some drug paraphenalia near where I live. They often use spoons to heat up their gear.
Personally I prefer the idea this is some kind of shrine - the prayer flags fit with that.

i gotta a connection maybe kinda stupid but i think he got those from saint jude he thought its was haunted tunnel goes it and in that hole he tried to squeeze in and he needed to slip in so he put its on him and slips in and cant get back up and dies
You may be onto something there! I don’t know. It is very mysterious. I may go back to this mine in the not too distant future and attempt to widen that gap next to the ore chute and get back into the farther reaches of the mine. I’m also curious what’s in that big wooden box that you can see behind the chute.
Just seeing those flags would have sent me outside. Quickly!

I've heard diatomaceous earth has a cleansing/detox effect on the body. Possibly the flags were prayers and the candles were there to rid a person from cancer or some other terrible disease. A scripture in the Bible states Jesus rubbed "mud" in a blind man's eyes and he was able to see again. Faith is a tremendous part of healing. Idk it's just a thought. I think something lives on after our physical form is no longer here. Electricity makes up part of our activity in our brains and, as you might know, energy can neither be created nor destroyed. So that energy has to go somewhere after our physical bodies die. Whether we are cognizant at that point in time is up to debate - but I would like to think that we are aware in some way that we currently do not understand.

Maybe so. This mine is pretty much out in the middle of nowhere, though. But who knows? I'm curious as to what might be in that large wooden box that's behind the ore chute. I might be going back to widen the gap at the ore chute so I can get past it and check that out.
