- Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre - Originally composed for choir - Arranged for Marimba Quartet by J.T. Solis
This is the UTSA Percussion Studio Quartet performing an arrangement of the choir piece Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre. The members in this ensemble are Ediel Saenz, Steven Partida, Stephen Macias, and J.T. Solis. (Listen with headphones, it makes the audio quality much sweeter) Enjoy!
About Lux Aurumque:
"After deciding upon the poem by Edward Esch (I was immediately struck by its genuine, elegant simplicity), I had it translated into the Latin by the celebrated American poet Charles Anthony Silvestri. A simple approach was essential to the success of the work, and I waited patiently for the tight harmonies to shimmer and glow."
- Eric Whitacre
Here is the poem:
Lux,
Calida gravisque pura velut aurum
Et canunt angeli molliter
modo natum.
Light,
warm and heavy as pure gold
and angels sing softly
to the new-born babe.
Edward Esch
(Translated to Latin by Charles Anthony Silvestri)
This is so beautiful. I dont understand how more people havent seen this, never thought marimbas could blend so nicely to create such an angelic sound. Well done!
+Laura Campbell Wow, thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed our performance!
Wow
Glad you like it, enjoy!
Amazing
I have been kind of obsessed with Eric Whitacre, specifically Lux Aurumque for the past few days; I must confess that I looked up a marimba arrangement as a joke. I love the marimba, but I didn't think it could handle this kind of music, and you guys proved it could.
Very, very well done!
That’s funny that’s exactly what I did! And I feel the exact same way
Brilliant. I came to RUclips to see if anyone had done an arrangement of this for marimba and this was exactly what I was hoping for. So well done y’all.
Hey thanks so much! It was a lot of fun to put together and perform!
I can't believe this hasn't blown up and gone viral yet damn

great arrangement!
L B hey thanks so much! It is essentially the exact choral parts just rearranged so that the voices (mallets) don’t cross. Glad you enjoyed it!
Ethereal and uplifting! Evelyn Glennie would like this.
Wow, thank you for your wonderful complement. So glad you enjoyed our performance!
Thank you so much Rosa Martinez and ILika Da! For some reason it won't let me comment on your posts individually, so I have resorted to just giving you guys a shout out over the comment feed. I hope to keep uploading as many percussion videos as I can, and maybe you guys will be inspired by more!
Wow. Who'da thunk it?
Well, we did! Lol. Just grabbed the choir parts and played them essentially. Just goes to show great music works on any instrument!

+MegaTatertotz Lol! I am assuming you enjoyed the performance?
+stvn11drummer yes! I'm speechless all I can say is goddamn with tears in my eyes lol is that your group?
+MegaTatertotz Yes it is! It was a lot of fun to perform, and I am glad that you liked our performance so much. :)
where can i get the music for this?
Hi Max, the music is simply the choir version of this piece played on marimba (with a couple of changes so that nobody is crossing paths). You can google search the music and buy the choir parts via any online store.
how would one acquire a copy of this?
steininator The parts are simply the choir parts (SATB), with a couple of notes moved between parts so that there weren't any crossing lines between players. So you can just order the parts and score from Mr. Whitacre, and basically read it down with your ensemble if you so desire.
mallets used?
头 it has been a while since this performance, but I do think it was the Vic Firth Gifford Howarth series that we used. I don’t remember to be quite honest, but that would be my best guess.
stvn11drummer thank you
Sheet music!?!?
+Dominic Lipari It is essentially the choir parts just played by the 4 of us!
