And BOOM FR-8 prices just went up 25%….
i traded mine for a good deal several years back but was never gonna find one the price of 200$ bucks again rip.
@@wb7585 Same. I had a nice one, but sold it towards something I wanted more. Cool, but not a big loss.
Couldn’t even find one prior to this video for a good price. Know where to look?
@@SlaterRecreational Gunbroker or scour the gun shows… They were never very common to begin with… I found mine in a small rural gun store for $300.
Yeah I’m sad to admit back in February me and a friend of mine split a lot of them and it came out to a little over 900 per rifle. But they’re in immaculate shape
When Jeff Cooper was describing the scout rifle, this is really what he had in mind.
Texas plinker has a 1moa at 1000y challenge and some dude put a cheap scope on a Mosin-Nagant and nearly won the competition 😅. Surplus is just flat out interesting!
I never heard of that will look it up thx
I was going to comment and say he needs to shoot some groups with the irons and take it to the 1 moa at 1000 yards challenge 😂
That mosin would have definitely been used for sniper rifle bag in the day
proves that it’s the shooter not the gun. but the gun helps
Just FYI. The FR8 rifle was based on the Spanish Mauser 8mm Model 1943 (8mm made into FR8), while the FR7 was based on the Spanish Mauser 7mm Model 1916 (7mm made into FR7). Recently discovered where the naming convention came from. The "FR" stands for "Fusil Reformado" in Spanish ("Converted Rifle"), and the number is the caliber mm of the former/base rifle.
thanks for this!
Still have my FR-8 that I purchased in the mid 90's.
Got mine about a decade after you did👍
Me, too. Did a new shipment come in?
Yep! even Hunters Lodge is selling the FR-7 (93 Mauser receiver) in .308 for $324 plus $20 for hand select. Was a time when the FR-8 (98 Mauser receiver) was had for under $200.
I haven't been able to find one in years. I remember seeing these back in the early 90's
Any 308 bolt action is the vibe
FYI, the front iron sight is the same as the CETME C, the rear sight is different. The CETME C has a 4 spoke paddle wheel style rear sight that rotates in line with the barrel to adjust elevation. Love that you did a feature on it though!
If you were to give KLAY a 6.5 Creedmoor rifle, he'd find a way to shoot steel case 6.5 Creedmoor even though it doesn't exist, lol
He'll also shoot cheap Russian 1960s surplus steel cased berdan primed corrosive .277 Fury.
Fires so well because it's greased in 100% Virgin olive oil.
Military surplus is a whole different type of gun hobby. I love it too. Great video brother
I love military surplus rifles
The only thing I don't like about it is the straight bolt handle, so I bought a spare Mauser bolt with a turned-down handle which headspaced correctly. I kept the original bolt, of course. I carry it behind the seat of my truck along with 100 rounds of ammo on strippers and a CETME bayonet. Yes, I know I'm not going to mount a bayonet charge, but the CETME bayo is actually a pretty good heavy field knife and it amuses me to have one I can mount on my rifle. It's about as good as you can get for a truck gun. It's rugged, compact, accurate, and hits with authority.
bought one in the late ‘80’s for $79. some vendor at a show had them stacked up in a corner like cord wood so I thought “why not”. what a fun and accurate little rifle.
I bought several SKSs for less than that.
I got one of those about two decades ago, always loved it.
I love mine, it's a great deer rifle.
Very enjoyable video, thanks!
Dammit..I had one of these in the '90s and sold it for grocery money. I bought it for nothing -probably $79.99 at my local Roses discount store. Now I'll have to buy it again for four or five times that price.
It's cool and I like it. The threaded barrel is pretty dope.
That’s a cool little classic factory chopped and screwed rifle.
Anybody else recall the slick Berretta "Tanker" that hit the surplus market in the 1970s-1980s? Think a shortened M-1 Garand with the detachable magazine of an M-14/M1A1. I dearly wish I had had the good sense to purchase one of those back then. As for the FR8, if I found one that cost less than our monthly house payment, I'd buy it and have that bolt handle bent by my gunsmith.
I picked one up about a month ago because of your first FR8 video 😂 I love it, it’s such a fun rifle to shoot
Great video KlayCO! Good to see something different. Would love to see one up close.
YEAH BABY WE LOVE TO SEE IT, CETMETON FOR THE WIN. 🔥🔥🔥
I like how the FR-8 is in .308 but not crazy about the length.
That is a good looking bolt gun. I need one. Thanks for posting.
I purchased one after watching the first video you posted about the FR8.
Do you mind sharing the price ranges you found them at?
I paid $750 for mine. But that was 3 years ago.
One of my favorite milsurp rifles and one of the last I would sell. If PPU stopped making milsurp ammo, a lot of guns would become fancy sticks. With the FR-8 I can still get ammo off of the shelf. Suppressing it easily is also another great bonus. ETA: One funky thing is the front sight adjustment uses the funky CETME-C tool. I am not sure how available they are these days.
High cool looking factor. The recoil looks to be manageable too. Very nice.
so, actually funny story: nearly bought one of these as my first gun (was one of the examples that takes CETME spanish 20rd mags),
but the bore was completely dead, it came with no magazines, and the bolt could move 3-4 degrees in terms of wobble when unlocked. (still locked up surprisingly solid.)
ended up buying a Winchester Model 120 instead (featherweight 12Ga sold primarily at Walmart in the 1980s) because it was basically new and the FR8 was frankly, a train wreck for the money they were asking.
That would be interesting to see. I've never heard of an FR model or any Mauser for that matter that took CETME mags.
@009013M3 i was under the impression that they were stopgap rifles issued to the spanish national guard until enough CETMEs could be made to issue them.
Nice video! I enjoyed it. . The FR8s are fun guns. They feed the blue plastic high velocity training ammo pretty well, and are fun for rabbit/depredation hunting. I'm envious of your suppressor set up, but can console myself knowing that The FR8 is way cooler looking with the original birdcage up front.
. Getting into Cold War and World War II surplus is much more expensive obviously than it used to be. I do see right now amazing civilian Surplus / police surplus of all kinds that is what I would be collecting if I was getting into the hobby now. All sorts of amazing police Surplus semi-auto handguns, really interesting shotguns, all sorts of our stuff, and the occasional m1as and Mini-14. I would say it's still a good time for collectible Surplus, given that it's too late for people who missed out on what it used to be like when Shotgun News came out full of all sorts of amazing stuff
Man, I wish I knew about this earlier.
Nice. I just bought one of these on Saturday
I liked mine. Wish I still had it.
I just unboxed 2 of these over on my channel, for a fraction of the cost but they are fixeruppers lol. I also got 2 nos stock sets for them. Plan on refurbishing them, they're very cool. I have 2 M43 Spanish Mausers these were made from...also pretty cool.
these are nice...what I like is you can fet sporterizes 308 mil surp and civilian bolt actions for relatively cheap
I saw these in Shotgun News in the 1980's when they were begging people to buy them! 🤣
I recently inherited one of these rifles but my grandfather sporterized it to all hell, the sights are a good upgrade but man that thing kicks like a mule with all the furniture cut down
Love the K31. I think they're works of art. The machining is beautiful. Sure do miss the dirt cheap match grade surplus ammo.
Have had one for a while and love it
It's a great, short little carbine that punches HARD on both ends haha
Awesome looking gun
I had the small ring one (fr7?) and it was great for the money
Got my son one about 15-20 years ago , $130 with a Cetme bayonet. At 15years old he hit targets at 200 yards with the iron sites. Had a note in spanish in the stock.
You can adjust windage with the front sight. Screw it up or down and it shifts the front sight "blade" since it is off center. I hunted with mine for years. Its reliable and accurate.
These shorter rifles, FR8, No5 Enfield, M44 etc. are very cool old war horses. I have beautiful examples of each. In fact if I had to pick one or two bolt guns as my only ones it would be either the FR8 or No5 Enfield.
Shoot some groups with the irons and take it to the 1 moa at 1000 yards challenge with Texas plinking 😂 i had an fr8 and sold it but it was kind of a turd. Had lived a rough life before i got it. I have a romanian m44 mosin carbine that's really nice. Love my chinese type 56 sks. Also recently picked up an Indian Ishapore 2A enfield chambered in 7.62 Nato and its a beautiful rifle. I really like all the mil surps. Sold my yugo M57 tokarev variant. I'll always keep my romanian Wasr-10/63. Is a 1974 trunion and its pretty sweet. Great video as always
I love it!
Cold War era bolt actions are so interesting. I've had my eye on a few FR8s over the years - but never ended up buying one sadly. If it's a subject you're interested in, I also recommend checking out the Madsen m47 in .30-06! There's also a number of Chinese converted Arisakas in 7.62x39 out there for our fellow x39 enjoyers 😎 cool video!
I remember this firearm from the 1990s and even the 1980s, not specific but the absolute deluge of military surplus bolt action rifles and semi automatic rifles that could be had for a song
So expensive that I think you could get them for under $200 or even under $100
The one thing that’s missing here is a ready-made mount in order to put a scope on it. You’re gonna be using iron sites and although the iron sites are excellent in hunting, you want to have a scope
And you’ll pay for expense gunsmithing to have a scope put on it
I remember this is the reason why I steered clear of bolt action military surplus guns because they’re great casual shooting guns to entertain yourself but for any serious work, they’re hampered
Would be interesting to see a video on the Psa ak101
swiss K31 is hard to beat! if you can find some gp11 ammo, I know its a sin to shoot but every time I go to my long range club I take it and about 30-40 rounds. It just shoots lights out with irons, i've always wondered what it could do if it had a scope? No im not gonna drill and tap the receiver, just always wondered the potential? great videos Klay, I really enjoy watching them, keep em comeing.
Love Old bolt guns
Very nice. Great rifle. Can you review the 1903a3
Milsurps just have a vibe…I should have gotten into them years ago.
Vibe Count: 1
I got into them years ago and was STILL late to the party. :P
May as well start now, I say!
Hell yea i got one for about 100 bucks. Traded for an air rifle and tasco scope lol. It was missing the irons but was already drilled and tapped so i put a small section of pic rail on it and mounted a red dot.
The fr-7 is proof tested to handle beyond what any off the shelf .308 puts out.
Great video! You should spend a day with Rob Ski. He loves the AK and milsurp as well.
Lol...
Funny, I just got one a few days ago
Wish i'd have had the money back in the 90s for one.
Now...they other issue is there is jack crap for supply.
Gotta haunt some pawn shops.
Clay. I really appreciate all that you do, brother. You have outstanding taste in firearms.
You should have shown it with a CETME bayonet attached before swapping muzzle device. Growing up during the Federal AWB nonsense, I always thought bayonets were cool, because the government didn't want us to be able to affix them. Another C&R bolt action 7.62x51 is the Israeli K98k conversion. The major downside for me is I don't shoot CETME or Mauser sights very well. Peep/apertures help with my astigmatism (some remains uncorrected with glasses), and thick flat front posts are vastly easier for me than pointy posts, regardless of rear sight type.
Going to buy the next FR8 I come across.
Make sure it's in good shape. They're great rifles but finding parts for them is a *problem*. Some parts are compatible with your regular old Mauser 98 pattern parts with minimal or no modification.
FunFact: That's not a rechambered rifle, it's a mauser modified with a Cetme, the original G3, barrel
Not really.
I've built both and you definitely are not getting a CETME barrel to work with a Mauser receiver. The CETME barrel uses a fluted chamber with knurled flat exterior surface hydraulically pressed into an interference fit trunnion, then drilled and pinned and welded. The FR8 barrel has no fluting, is a larger diameter at the rear, and is screwed into the Mauser receiver, marked for headspace, then cut for an extractor like any other modern rifle barrel.
The FR8 barrel was designed to be very similar to the ETME barrel though.
It’s the coolest thing since sliced bread
It's a thumper, but the #5 Enfield Jungle Carbine will thump you harder. When they first began to show up here in the States it was a deal too good to pass up.
it would be cool to see you run this at a 2 gun with a Spanish pistol like a star or llama
I got one last year and tried my sandman k on it and it looked alright but I got an end cap strike on it sadly /: excellent rifle besides that
Because HOLY SHIT 7x57mm is expensive. I traded my 1893 Mauser away years ago, but I saw a box of softpoints on the shelf locally and it was $70 for 20 freaking rounds.
Same in my area
@@scabcrawler632 There’s just no incentive for companies to change their tooling to produce obscure cartridges when they can sell all the NATO rounds they make.
You can cycle a bolt action without removing the stock from your shoulder.
Good rifle. I have one.
RIP to one of the last cheap-ish mausers
Everybody talking about FR8 but nobody talking about the SL8. (I need it).
Where's the best place to buy one?
Would make a Great Deer Rifle with the Can!
A 38 inch mil surp rifle that isnt a boat oar? Sound like this thing would fit me way better than a mosin or enfield ever would.
I have the same rifle, bought ten years ago 150.00 at gun show best rifle I own.
Dang great price
When closing the bolt with stripper clip in place is the stripper clip destroyed/ flattened out by the bolt?
I got a 1951 rifle, first year production, and one of the first years for 7.62x51, but the bolt is just a few digits off : / anyone have any problems with swapped bolts?
Could it be the sights have some slop to them leading to the misses?
❤
I have both, and honestly the gibbs 2a1 "jungle carbine" is a better rifle over all. barrel is chromoly EN19 steel, holds 13 rounds in mag, is basically a classic Enfield rifle, so the amount of time to get all 13 rounds out versus the 5 in the fr8 is almost the same exact time.
There are some pretty good detachable mags for the Mauser
@@tnrancher3913 THey're okay, a few people fiddle with them at NRL Hunter. I didn't care for them so I made a bolt-on +5 round box mag conversion for my 98 Open Lightweight class rifle instead. I've been meaning to make one for my FR-8 because it would look stunning on that little gun.
You’ll be having Ian McCullum on here in no time, now. Lol.
The man who designed the HK91 built the FR8 in Spain
What range do you shoot at??? It seems like an awesome place!
The Ranch TX Club, same as 9hole.
I love mine.
What about the FR-7? I am lucky enough to own both.
Mosin M-44!
Do a Mosin video next
What's the twist rate on that barrel?
Really not sure why some company hasn't made repro bolt rifles in 7.62
I wonder what the tube under the barrel is for. It looks like a gas tube for a semi-auto. But it's a bolt gun. Does it stabilize the barrel or something else?
Small cleaning kit tube.
Here's the funny part.
That's not a gas tube on the CETME either.
The only milsurp rifle i can afford anymore is one thats on a stamp lol
Shit, theres only one in gunbroker with a bunch of bids already lol
And $70 shipping! Holy cow.
You gotta set up a recurring search and have it send you results every morning. They come up from time to time. I got mine with a really cool figured stock and a barrel that appeared for all intents and purposes to be unfired for five hundred in 2022. They're drying up though. So grab the first reasonably priced all original one without any parts cut off and a good bore, if you want one.
whats with the gas tube thing?
Your front sight post looks a little to the right.
Or the ishapor 2a1.
I have both. No comparison. The Ishapore is a boat anchor. I love it, don't get me wrong. It's fun to shoot, but it's huge, fragile, heavy, bulky, and requires a substantial amount of precision hand fitting and tuning to shoot anywhere near as accurate as an FR-8 in decent shape.
@@009013M3 Well there's also the Israeli mausers in 308, however if it were my money I'd love to get a columbian mauser in 30-06.
Gunbroker has two, the relevant price appears to be the one that is ending soon, $950. Is that a good deal? It’s not a gun for me since I have no use for it but you never know what a wealthy collector would be willing to pay. These are cool rifles though.
Can you work the bolt with the rifle shouldered? I saw one RUclips video where for some reason, the shooter HAD to drop the stock from his shoulder to work the bolt. I was wondering if it was maybe that one particular rifle.....
I find it easier
@@KLAYCO47 Yes, but CAN you do it? The RUclips video claimed the rifle's bolt just didn't work from the shoulder. Sounds strange but I'm trying to verify.
@mateoocampo3165 Yes you can
@@KLAYCO47 Thanks! Must be his rifle in particular......
Can’t find one for sale anywhere.
