The meaning of the green light is so vast. I love how accurately it portrays the fact that everyone has dreams and aspirations but when we reach that goal we realise it's the idea of wanting we enjoy more than having it. Like money, we're always working for it, but once we have it we realise how unimportant it is in life. When Gatsby is with Daisy in his house for the first time, he still looks out at the Green Light although Daisy is in his arms so he doesnt need to look over there anymore. Daisy also says how 'all the bright precious things fade so fast and they dont come back'. Like gatsbys dreams of lovjng daisy, her 'bright and precious thing' was Gatsby, but it had gone and 'faded so fast', the only difference is Gatsby didn't know it had faded as he was so infatuated with the green light and loving Daisy, when she was already out of reach as her 'voice is full of money'. Deep stuff and Baz Luhrmann is a genius.
“If it wasn’t for the mist we could see your home across the bay,” said Gatsby. “You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.” Daisy put her arm through his abruptly, but he seemed absorbed in what he had just said. Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one.
even though it is CGI, the shot where the camera pans over the bay and closes in on gatsbys house with manhattan lit up in the background is one of the best shots in recent cinema
I thought I was the only one who saw the marvel of this scene. Even though its brief, the shot along with the orchestra displaying the emotion of the scene adds the grandiose feel of the era.
What makes this scene my favourite is the music and Gatsby waiting for Daisy. The fact that the two of them are literally facing each other when the scene shifts from Daisy’s house to Gatsby’s house, and the music fills the background with more emotion than what the scene already has... I think that’s what’s so special and wonderful. I keep coming back for the music. Gatsby walking on the dock and the never ending wait.
Luhrmann's a genius because the story had to be put on the big screen with modern culture. If it wasnt done a lot of people would not know of the gatsby story in future generations and it's too meaningful to let go. He's adapted it to appeal to a modern audience but he makes the most emotionally meaningful parts of the scene so much more meaningful. Makes everything look amazing and knows the exact music to use (like this scene). Beautiful and he has life and its values down to a tee. Watch baz luhrmann - sunscreen for how you should go about life. Peace and love x
Iconic & best scene of the whole movie indeed, specially Gatsby's slowish dock-walkin with Green flashing & background tune is really 1of a kinda scene❤🙃❤
I'm 13 and I've been inlove with this movie and book ever since. I've probably read the book like 5 times yet I pick up new and different pieces to analyze and think about - it truly is a masterpiece. I remember loving books like the Duff until I realized writing can be soo much more intense and in depth. ❤️❤️
One of the most beautiful, poignant moments in recent cinematographic history- between the music, the visuals on screen, and the sentiment expressed by Daisy- and it’s so true- these moments pass by, and then they’re gone! Well done, Bazz Luhrman! (And F. Scott Fitzgerald, too!). Such a great moment…
For those asking about the opening song, it's not 'green Light', it's 'Hearts A Mess' by Gotye. When you hear it, it might not be instantly recognizable as this is an orchestral version by the sound of it and without vocals.
Everyone being cute and all throwing out names of songs that sound similar. The song is Craig Armstrong - Green Light (ft. The xx) from the Orchestral Score album.
This movie gets so much right while getting so much wrong. It’s the most frustrating movie ever. This scene, however, is excellent. It really makes the symbolism of how Gatsby’s dream was right there, right in his grasp, so close.
It’s spiritual, this makes me see it clear the balance in the world, all the questions I have about life and our purpose, it makes sense, God’s plan ( in the after life it’s better and forever remaining )
I think at that specific part you're referencing it's actually "Together" by the xx. The beginning is the orchestral version of "Hearts a Mess" from Gotye.
In the background night Light Of house moving to wards the other side u could see A Silght shadow mix with light walking towards the green Slowly slowly Till..

dodsy32 Good Summarization & such a deep thought. Could you like to be my friend
I so agree with you. Everything feels so meaningless once our dreams are fulfilled. The journey is more enjoyable than the destination.
green light means GO
I know you wrote this 10 years ago , but Man , this Is deep and sad , we aré trying to reach something always

Yes, so gorgeous. Definitely outstanding CGI.
This cgi looks real ass shit

CGI or not . That scene combined with the music made it gorgeous
@@NeonVars I remember watching in theatre in 3d and this scene literally took my breath away

I love this scene so much that I feel sadden just by seeing Gatsby walking on the dock, walking toward his sad, final destiny...
I see it as a tribute to the green light. He is paying tribute to the green light. I think he is most happy just by doing that.
I rewatched this 100 times at least...

all the bright precious things fade so fast...and they don't come back.
I wonder why did she said this line?
his house was the brightest just hoping one day she would see it and walk towards it. fuck man that hurts.
Anyone with a crush felt that

I’m so bummed that I never went to go experience this on the big screen
you missed out
This scene took my breath away in 3D. I had to watch it twice on the big screen. I’ve never done that before.
I love it when you can see the city in the background with the orchestra playing the dramatic music
Is this one of the very best single moments in cinematography?
yes it is..
Is this a rhetorical question?
@@MA-dm4xy Yes it is
gives me goose bumps every time i watch it

this is the most clever use of hearts a mess. Such an amazing song in an amazing movie
I love how decaprio's acting, so perfect..
This scene being posted as the best makes that someone who did god knows who, got the same admiring sense as mine
absolutely loved this scene.

i really love this scene. the music fits perfekt, it is great. it is so melancholic in a way. gatsby believed in a dream that he can never reach.

Thanks :)
+Sai Tadikonda Green light (feat the XX) - Craig Armstrong the orchestra
What the fuck are you on? Its green light its literally on the film's ost rofl
I know, that is why the song was on the soundtrack. But to combine this song with this scene and knowing the outcome... awesome, isn t it?
@@TheAmazingCDJV check the other soundtrack there u will find gotye with hearts a mess.
best moment in any movie ever made. The first 30 seconds of this clip.
this is my favorite scene too
The lighting in this movie was amazing. Night was just as amazing as the day, kinda like the Florida beach scene in Contact.
I've added OST in video description. It's Green Light by Craig Armstrong feat. The XX.
Everyone being cute and all throwing out names of songs that sound similar.
The song is Craig Armstrong - Green Light (ft. The xx) from the Orchestral Score album.
It's on Spotify...
Any idea where I could find that album?
You can get it on iTunes... It's very EASY to find...
Good luck getting flac files off iTunes.
Damian omg ty so much....that track is so intense fave one from movie next to young & beautiful
everyone in the comments just helped sm w my essay thank you
What i like is how nick narrated the story
This truly is the best scene!
I agree this is the best bit. I have this music and the scene is beautiful. I kept repeating it.
Yes, thanks for uploading this!
Dat sound the green light makes.
Daisy is so close yet so far from Gatsby‘s grasp and the green light tortures Gatsby because of that!
This movie gets so much right while getting so much wrong. It’s the most frustrating movie ever. This scene, however, is excellent. It really makes the symbolism of how Gatsby’s dream was right there, right in his grasp, so close.
beautiful scene
I discovered Hearts A Mess by Gotye a few years ago and I never realized that the song was in this wonderful movie😍
He's waiting for it.
That green light.
He wants it.
Absolutely beautiful!
Fun fact, F Scott Fitzgerald wrote this about the green light on messenger when his crush was online
It's called Green Light by Craig Armstrong
It’s spiritual, this makes me see it clear the balance in the world, all the questions I have about life and our purpose, it makes sense, God’s plan ( in the after life it’s better and forever remaining )
I wish I could direct like this
This movie/scene moved me like Titanic did. Music is the language of the soul.
my favourite too!!
Best scene, indeed.
"There's a great green light! Acrooooss, the ocean, and it's where I, want to, gooooo!"
1:06 - 1:18 is "Together" by XX :)
Beautiful film !!
Green light (feat the XX) - Craig Armstrong the orchestra
Thank me later x
The soundtrack OST can be found on Spotify :)
1:06 - 1:18 is actually Hearts A Mess by Gotye
i don't think thats the song or i am wrong!?
I think at that specific part you're referencing it's actually "Together" by the xx. The beginning is the orchestral version of "Hearts a Mess" from Gotye.
+mary feller that snippet is indeed an orchestral version of hearts a mess, but the full version of that is called Green Light by Craig Armstrong
+FamilyGuyTVs Green light (feat the XX) - Craig Armstrong the orchestra
1:07 why can’t I find this piece of music played by a piano nowhere
for me the best scene
I hate cringy movies like this one but when I saw this scene, the music gave me chills.
Magic

Anyone know the instrumental song at the beginning?
1. The Great Gatsby Ost Green Light
2. The Great Gatsby Ost Beautiful Shirts and Dan Cody
It's also a reprise of the chorus from "Heart's a Mess" by Gotye
(I would've said rip-off, less the original hadn't played in the credits, old sport)
Reprise of 'Gotye - Heart's A Mess' for the theatrical score
0:01-0:40 - does anybody know this soundtrack? Is it modified "Gotye - Hearts A Mess"?
1:06-1:18 - and this soundtrack?
What does the green light represent?🤔
what song is this i LOVE the violin
melly nava The song is Craig Armstrong ft. The XX - The Green Light
The song is an orchestral version of "my hearts a mess" by Gotye
Thanks I got it on phone already I have both songs didn't even realize they're the same lol good to know
Zankom is that actually official? or just the coincidence of a similar sounding song.
