  • The Corpus Clock & Chronophage is the first clock in the world to employ Dr Taylor’s patented method of displaying time.
Features a pioneering appropriation of the Vernier Principle to display seconds, minutes and hours in a brilliant blue light display.
Renowned scientist Stephen Hawking unveiled this remarkable clock, known as the Corpus Clock. The machine has been invented by and designed by Dr John Taylor for Corpus Christi College Cambridge for the exterior of the college's new library building.
The Clock was unveiled on 19th September 2008 by Stephen Hawking, cosmologist and author of the global bestseller, A Brief History of Time.
Dr Taylor, an inventor and horologist, has put seven years into developing the clock, which has been inspired from a design by a clock made by the legendary John Harrison, the pioneer of longitude.
Of John Harrison's many innovations, he came up with the "grasshopper escapement", explained Dr Taylor, referring to the device used by Harrison to turn rotational motion into a pendulum motion for timekeeping.
"No one knows how a grasshopper escapement works, so I decided to turn the clock inside out and, instead of making the escapement 35 mm across, it is 1.5 m across," he said.
He calls the new version of the escapement a Chronophage (time-eater) a fearsome beast which drives the clock, literally eating away time.

Just found this video. Wow. What an amazing mechanism. At the description of the vernier slits in the wheels, my jaw dropped. I pictured lights going on and off around the outside, not a wheel moving through only six degrees each second. What an amazing, beautiful thing.

It's beautiful. A fine example of both craftsmanship and ingenuity. It also serves a fairly grizzly reminder that time is always moving, and we'll never get it back. To all who have helped in the process of making this, my hat's off to you.

This is a beautiful and satisfying piece of engineering, I look forward to seeing it in real life one day. I like the idea of a clock being loud and just a little frightening, making you acutely aware of the seconds passing away, death's hand on your shoulder.

Part of the awesomeness of this world is not having to put 500K pounds and 7 years into building a thing of beauty and wonder, and allowing someone who wants to to do it. We get to enjoy that which we like and pass on that which we do not. We are assured that the 500K pounds and the 7 years of labor spent on this masterpiece diminished neither our own resources nor our time, but we still get to admire it. This world = win.

A clock has never really tweaked my imagination like this outside of the obvious, yet cliche symbolism. This thing drives the symbolism home with a sledgehammer while showing respect for older near-perfect technologies by only invoking the blue LED of our time and that's what really makes it an amazing work of art.

When I first heard about the clock via some news article, there was only a static image to view and I wasn't very impressed. However, since seeing this video I am now blown away and can see what the big deal is. My favourite part is when the seconds indicator light is zooming around every second (especially in the dark). I think what is really effective about this clock is that it does make one stop and think how quickly time is being consumed away. Verily man is in loss. Make the most of now.

We can confirm that the Corpus Clock has stopped three times since installation. The latest stoppage was at 5.35pm on Monday. These have been standard shut-downs due to safety checks to test for problems.
The computer which runs safety checks shuts down the clock if it detects anything that it does not understand. This enables the engineers to investigate and ensures the mechanical integrity is never compromised.
