    My Dad and I used to stop at the tackle shop in the 50s. It was located at the old hwy 72 right where you were. It was where you turn right to the lake. We also have been in the cave and there is a huge bowl in there where they made salt peter during the civil war. Mom said there was a dance hall there when she was young.

    Jackson County has more caves per square mile than any other county in America.

      Yep. The following is out of a Wikipedia link about the history of the cave. Apparently it served as the first county seat.
      “In the past, the cave served a variety of uses. Cherokee natives mined the soil to make saltpeter for gunpowder. Saltpeter mining continued on occasion across the War of 1812, and the American Civil War. Sauta Cave was one of the largest saltpeter mines operated during the Civil War. Remains of the mining exists in the form of a wooden railroad and large iron kettles; the mining tunnels are now referred to as "The Catacombs".
      In 1819, the year Alabama was admitted to the Union, Jackson County, Alabama, became a county with the county seat at Sauta.[2] Court was held in Sauta Cave.
      A building near the entrance to the cave was used as a fishing store and night club from 1919 to 1956, with a dance area near one of the entrances to take advantage of the cool wind exiting the cave. In 1962, a local National Guard unit prepared the cave for use as a fallout shelter.
      In 1978, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service acquired the property to protect the endangered Indiana and gray bats. The site was originally named the Blowing Wind Cave National Wildlife Refuge. Access to the cave was restricted to scientific research on the bats. In 1999, it was renamed to its current name of Sauta Cave National Wildlife Refuge.”

    that building was awesome! When you said a double building, maybe you meant a "dogtrot" house - the kind of old house that had an open area like a deck or porch in between two other buildings - but had just one roof that connected the two.
    Building on rocks or short pillars/pylons makes the house stay colder (like it or not), but also helps the house last a lot, lot longer - over 100 years. The big enemies of wooden buildings, moisture and termites, have a hard time reaching the house's wood. I am not sure it is legal to build that way anymore.

      i see trailers on blocks all the time lol so maybe. and when i built my log shed i built it on 4 big stones ruclips.net/video/eTWNzSd-Cf8/видео.html . theres a few old buildings around here that i stil aint made a video on. i need to get after it lol

      @ genk
      My home was built based on the "dog trot homes". Bathroom and laundry room in that open space in between. There is always a breeze on 1 of the 3 porches. There's reasons they were built this way. I researched before building in Florida

    • @genkiferal7178
      @genkiferal7178 Месяц назад

      @@christinemccoy4471 There is a family in GA who lived in one side and their in-laws lived in the other. Since most counties have a 900 or 1,000 sq ft minimum for building a house, I'd think that each side being 450 or 500 sq ft might help people overcome this and they could rent out the other side if they can't find family or friends to move into the other half.
      I realize that the initial intent was for the hot or stinkier parts of the house to be one one side which meant the kitchen and laundry was part of the other half.
