I don't really have anything to contribute; just wanted to thank you for the quick overview on the game. It helped me make an informed decision and I appreciate the brevity vs. the 40+ minute long other pieces of content on the game.
I generally agree. Having gotten 3 endings in FP2 so far and having 100%'d FP1, I definitely prefer the *intimacy* of FP1, but the scale and the of the novelty of FP2 will keep me playing for a while. It's not a *bad* game, some people will prefer FP1, some people will prefer FP2.
I would've preferred FP2 to have similar designs to FP1 but to expand and add more stuff. FP2 just feels like too big of a jump from FP1, leaving behind the mechanics i enjoyed from FP1
This is the first time I’ve seen one of your videos but the chart at 2:06 is a fantastic metric. It breaks down the individual parts of a game so well and is very easy to interpret and understand. Much better than the regular game review how they do 5 minutes of “pros” and 5 minutes of “cons” and just slap 7/10 at the end
I'll probably grab this at a discount but I don't imagine i'll like it more than the intimate survival that the first one went for. They are nailing the style even more in FP2 tho, looks cool.
Agreed, it looks awesome... from a distance. On zooming in, I did notice that the animations are a little rough with things like Frostbreakers jumping in and out of existence. But the overall effect is still a pretty one.
I really miss being able to see the individual people going to and from their work. How that blended with the soundtrack and the cold winds was atmosphere heaven. While this game looks like it has fun gameplay, I don't feel the crisis of survival. Getting a popup telling me that 134 people have died in an instant does not feel dramatic or compelling.
@@deadsec3554 nah rendering that much assets and calculating all of their paths would challenge even the better pc's. @@random_user98 I agree but why improve the graphics. Keep the same engine and make a new game with better mechanics and expand ? This constant need to push graphics is why we get dumbed down version.
@@deadsec3554 I'm not sure, I didn't really think the graphics were outstandingly good to the point where it might have impacted other parts of the game but I can't give an opinion on that issue as a whole. I don't play the big titles where the graphics are really impressive but lame gameplay, my pc couldn't run it anyway. I don't think this game falls into this category personally
I like the game and how it plays. Of course, I agree that the story could be more developed. The beginning cinematic suggests that New London becomes greedy and wants more, but this aspect feels lacking in the game itself. I also think that the factions could be fleshed out more. I know each faction has its own laws and research, but it would be cool to add mandates, similar to a small element from FP1, where failing to meet demands results in a hit on the trust level. Additionally, decisions could be fleshed out more. For instance, I had children working in mines, and then I received a message saying that the mines could collapse, losing 80% of production. However, if I blow air into them, I would kill 180 children, but the mines would remain open. I chose to blow air into them because there was no penalty on trust or faction. I think the game is good-not great-but it's fun to play. I hope the developers improve things along the way and restore some hope.
I kinda like that it's different from frostpunk 1. If I wanted to play the first game again, I would do that. I like that it's a bigger scope. I hope they continue this going forward and increase the scope even more if they do a fp3
They could have easily kept everything we love from the first one and expanded instead of doing this shit show. I mean other than the visuals this is not frost punk
This review is, from my perspective, perfect. You hit the nail on the head with the bland story, sadly they did literally nothing with the oil and went all out political story, which is bad af since they promoted oil so much. Also the mega city clutter comment feels pretty on point, I do not want to look at my city up close, because all that awaits me is clipping district buildings into streets, each other, and special buildings- But the sound is great. The exploration feels left in the dust tho, as there are no beautiful pictures anymore when you find something, just a little header up top, that repeats more than in FP1 endless. It's also weird how tech works in FP2, apparently the random automatons running around don't cost steamcores and hothouses require fertile soil now. There s nothing new steampnuk or even dieselpunk since it includes oil now. Overall I'd say they had a lot of potential and wasted it on a generic bland but for a few hours acceptable city builder.
Glad you liked the review! And thanks for your detailed thoughts, they all resonate with me, especially your observation about how the giant automatons just kinda pop up and have no bearing on your steamcores - seems like the devs just threw them in because they looked cool, not because they made any sense.
Yeah, I think I'd give the game's Value micrometric a 4/5 when it hits the $30 price point (which, admittedly, won't happen anytime soon). On the bright side, Frostpunk 1 is only $3 until 9/21!
Many issues are preventing the game from being playable for me. The top issue is the resolution adjustment that is locked in Window mode! I have an Ultra Wide Monitor and play many games that require onscreen navigation and selection in a Windowed 2560x1440 mode, and that option is not there! So now my only option is to play in 5120x1440, which is beyond tedious. I played FP1 with no problem in 2560x1440. Right now, the game is not playable for me, and there are other bugs. I should have waited and once again kicking myself for getting a game when it releases.
Update: 11 Bit Studies - Suggests I change the resolution in Full Screen to 2560 x 1440? What? This will cause screen distortion and will not address the issue. This option is available in Frostpunk and works perfectly. It is a coding issue. Very disappointed to get this suggestion from support. Continue to play Frostpunk until Frostpunk 2 issues are resolved.
For me personally, I was looking for more with Frostpunk 2 and I feel like they totally missed the mark here. I don't want some overview and generalized 'ruler-style' political stuff. I feel like there could have been a much better use for this and though I could sit here and provide a college-essay style break-down I will save everyone the time. This one, not for me. Maybe on G2A for 2.99$ or 90% off sale.
Anno has been doing the city builder genre basically the same way for over a decade, with each new title in the franchise adding more to the foundation of what the franchise has always been. So what could FP2 do? Remain a city builder and add to what FP1 offered. Just like SimCity, Cities Skylines, Anno, and pretty much all the other city builders that have more than one title in their respective franchise. I don't know what FP2 is, but it's not a city builder. At least not in the way that made FP1 popular.

oh but you can. You can JUST copy paste the game. We wanted more frostpunk. not civ 6 with ice. Some of the changes made completely takes the core principles of the first game and throws it out the window. It would be ok to just update the game in a way where the buildings looks better, other narrative elements and keep the core gameplay.
I'm not sure I can agree. What you described sounds like a 4K remaster of the original game + another DLC narrative pack. If 11 bit spits that out after six years, many people would call it a cash grab. (For the record, I would love to play it.)

1:49 "What else could they do?" They could have kept closer to the vibe of the first game while making smaller tweaks to improve it and keep it fresh. Many great sequels use this formula. You don't have to go the lengths of changing the genre of a game to do a sequel.
Sure, and that is the boring choice. Making granular changes every sequel akin to the next year's Call of Duty. Avoiding creative risks as to not upset anyone with change. I liked that 11bit's artists chose to be bolder. Sequels can be more than reiterations.
