- Camera battle! The new Fujifilm X-H2s with 18mm f1.4 and 8-16mm f2.8 vs the Sony A7S III with 20mm f1.8 and Zeiss Batis 25mm f2. Has aps-c crop sensor caught up to full frame? We compare dynamic range, color science, autofocus, stabilization etc. Is flog 2 better than slog 3? Film simulations like astia and nostalgic neg vs Sony's creative looks.

What are the camera clips on your backback straps? Or are those GoPro mounts? I'm not seeing them in your affiliate links, and they look wider than the Peak Design one, which is too narrow for my straps.
Around the 4 min mark -- the sky is blue with fuji but grey with sony! Maybe sums up their world views.
One’s glass half full and the other glass half empty type of company lol
In the shots you are comparing: compare also the face. For me Fuji is underexposing the face so the sky looks ok. Sony on the other hand has proper face exposure which cause sky overexposed. In Sony you have the settings to adjust if you want to expose for face (when it is detected). So you cannot really conclude if you do not know the settings, but in the other hand it is dead simple to have the exposure the way want…
@@pawelmod3292 @j d Or try 11:28, where I'd say the face is darker with Sony and the Fuji exposure on the face is more natural.
@@pawelmod3292 what? The shadows are deeper on Fuji but the skin tone is much better. If anything, the Sony is overexposed there
@@paddington2063 this is what I’ve said. Sony set exposure for the face and because of it overall shot is over exposed and because of it sky lacks the colour. It is something that could be possibly asjusted in post. And that behaviour of camera is basing on user settings. On Fuji in mu opinion face is too dark, underexposed - something that also could be adjusted or managed in post.
My point was/is, that to compare the cameras, you need to have the comparable settings - in that shot fuji is setting exposure for the whole frame, sony is balancing exposure basing on face as well.
Great comparison. Fuji 18 1.4 is a ridiculously good lens. Everyone says ‘science’ but I wasn’t seeing any significant (if any) real-world dynamic range advantage with the A7IV over the X-H2S.
Sony a7siii was the most cinematic thing i had ever seen until fuji xh2s came and DESTROYED Sony, also dynamic range was definitely better on fuji, autofocus was great except for first few minutes
A!
@@niratyapornsecor2552 wut
@Ops Blac or maybe the skies were "bluer" on xh2s giving this illusion of more highlights retention
@@-_--le3zk I think you initiall assessment was correct. I'd say the sky is roughly equally exposed on both, but if you look at him, Sony has to underexpose him to get that exposure on the sky.
I love your videos!
Been subscribed for years and I'm pretty sure I'll buy my first camera soon.
Through your affiliate links, obviously.
If you compare Fuji vs Sony a74, both are in same price category, then Fuji is better - you get good 4k 120, you get Prores, whyyy more recording options, Much better rolling shutter, better colors.
So actually for its price, I think fuji is better.
For Video for sure. I think Sony might have the edge when i comes to stills cause of full frame glory but for everything that goes fast, Fuji is a very good choise. I just hope Fuji will relase more new lenses. But 'm allready locked into the Sony eco-system.
You can record 1080/120 on the Sony and then upscale to 4k if you really need that frame rate. The Sony is still the way better value since it’s FF and offers extremely reliable AF.
I do work with both and I always end up taking the sony to the live jobs.
Simply because the autofocus is stil random. It works great until it doesn’t and i’ve lost important moments because of that.
If you do work where you can redo shots then yes I think the fuji has more potential but for fast live work its not trust worthy enough yet.
If you don’t care too much about keeping your eye in focus, yes, Fuji wins.
Fuji is the wayyy better option for video it’s not even a competition. I was not impressed with the a7iv when I owned it. I used it extensively and it’s just OK.
I love the Fujifilm's look. The Sony is just soft sometimes and colours only your mom would love. I'm still curious as to how that 4K120 would look slowed to 240 on iMovie. Got great results from my Sony doing that.
I've slowed the 240p to 480p a couple times, looked good.
9:04 That's a nice improvement. Very nice. Hopefully all previous cameras can get this new focus algo. Please!
I'm quite ignorant about this but isnt this also the result of a new 18mm? I think all the new fuji lens will work great with af along the new cameras
and the greens on the sony is horrendous
You're on a roll with the XH2S vids!:)
Been using my XH2S for over a year. Shot hundreds of videos. Absolutely love it.
Also recently used it on a commercial shoot as it was the only camera to shoot ProRes internal.
The whole crew was impressed with my Fuji!
I’d be curious to see if setting WB with a gray card solves the occasional orange shirt problem.
Of course it would. Nobody shoots like this (except Camera Conspiracies of course, lol).
Fuji colors are just so much more vibrant and full of life
Agreed on the oddities of how each camera exposes the subject. The Fuj appears, at least in YT, to have some 'extra' level of contrast baked in (is this all FLog ?). When you walk into the shade though, it looks quite nice. Otherwise the darks are, I dunno, maybe a tad bit much - personal pref. The face tones appeared to edge toward the magenta in certain cases ( yet the orange of the shirt was probably correct - I'd be curious what your vector scope shows).
On the Sony front - I'm not a fan of S-Cinebone. I don't think it's any wonderful in-camera solution to Sony colors. It's f'ing magenta, too. Grading SLog3 is far easier for me (and I can for the most part, camera match it). I've learned to trust it and can simply concentrate on exposure and DoF (yeah, I use a monitor to apply a custom lut tha..... wait, not vlogger useful :)).
You really DO need solid in-camera color and DR. Maybe handhold an Arri (read: monkey strength for the delts) ? Wait, no 240p for you. And you might separate your shoulder holding that rig at arm's length.......dang. And I thought jiu-jitsu was rough on 'em.
When the butterfly scenes came up, I was thinking you should start filming 3d content with these two setups.🤣
It seems like there's around 1 more stop of latitude, which has also been confirmed by CineD.
You can clearly see how much more detail is there in both shadows and highlights.
Are you referring to the Fuji?
God, I love this channel. Please stay your unique self, forever. Such a gift to RUclips!
Seems to me that the log on Fuji gets more colors in? Does it have the same bit rate? I prefer the Fuji colors for sure..
Flog2 has a slightly wider color space and grabs the image from 14bit. That could be the reason.
@@pascalbasel 14 bit? How is that even possible? Is that why this new Fuji camera has such a big price?
@@timothymatthews6458 It as a bigger price because it as more features that even the Sony. 6.2k, ProRes internally, 40fps for photos, Better Dynamic Range, etc
@@AsuquoTravelsProductions I think the Sony doesn't have a stacked sensor either yeah? If I'm not wrong only the A1 has a stacked chip. This would also add to the cost.
@@JoaquimGonsalves The A7SIII doesn’t have stacked sensor only the A1 does.
I think you need to have the same tonyature to compare slowmo quality though. Still, I may complain, but I love these comparisons and I pray for a GH6 to be added to the mix one day still.
Life was better with Panasonic and the glorious manually focused mitakon
I'm actually watching all his older videos that I have missed right now. It really is glorious. :) (don't forget the sony X3000 and canon SX50 :P )
Starting to think your t-shirt is actually orange and not red.
That 18mm lens handled very well
I think he meant 16mm, because the only 18 is an f2 pancake.
@@porfiry what? I'm pretty sure the 18mm is the new lens that came out with the new 23mm 1.4 and the 33mm 1.4
@@catbread2585 Was he talking about a Sony 18mm lens, and only shooting the 8-16 on the Fuji? I guess that was never really clear to me.
@@porfiry The 18mm F1.4 LM WR is the newer prime and came out first of the new 18/ 23/ 33 lineup. The 8-16 F2.8 is a landscape and architecture oil barrel
@@Vinterloft Wow, I wasn’t even aware those came out…I’ve had at least the (pre-redesign I guess) 23/1.4 in the past and hated the bulk of it, so I haven’t paid much attention since I started shooting all the little F2s. I think early on in the video he is indeed using the 8-16 fattie, though, and switches somewhere in the middle.
You should go and spend a week with Phillip Bloom, I can’t bear to see you
struggle but I guess that’s the point.
I think you should make a mini movie using different cameras for some
continuity fun.
How do you do this test?
How do you setup cameras? What kind of log (Sony log s2,s3, Fuji flog 1 or 2), how do you normalize log? In what color space?
I saw faster this video because most of bla bla bla was about his impression and not a tech test.
I use to manage different cameras and different brand and to find real difference you should start from a common point of exposure, white balance, and more… also for autofocus test he use lenses with different value, that influence a lot the result.
Amazing Sony! I know it has a manual color dictionary similar to the latest Xperia line. It wins for me...
Wow the dynamic range on fuji is very good!
Loving the Fuji and Sony content, big fella 🔥
TBH I liked both images... But the brutal stabe and auto focus on the Fuji is a complete deal breaker. The pulsing is insane and the warpy stabe is absurd
Either Kasey was doing something wrong, or something was up with his camera. Fuji AF is not that bad. Sony is certainly still better though.
Is your shirt now red or orange? I've never been so confused.
I'm convinced more than ever that white balance should always be set manually, and not even with a white card, but just by eye through the viewfinder.
It's everything.
...so what you're saying is I should set everything to auto?
jk100% agree
@Ops Blac Yeah, that's a good starting point for sure. I feel it auto-WBs a little warm for my taste.
Dear Cayce, can you make streaking test for each camera? Right now nobody does it intentionally, unfortunately.
8:30 Seems that Fuji H2S is a Moiré Behemoth. Looks like the image quality degrades quite a bit in slow motion too, unfortunately.
No matter how you changed it, the colour of the sky on the Sony was what I call 'post apocalyptic'.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
what thaaaaa
I think this video broke me. . It is a search that has no end. I am going to lay on the couch and ponder life! btw, the Fuji looked better over all!
Could immediately tell which one was Fuji - more pronounced dynamic range with punchier colors and that good ol’ MAGENTA skin!
Oh they let you out for the day. How wonderful..... can't beat a bit of charismatic photography. Splendid stuff Sir!
A7SIII seems superior other than the colours but neutral toned down looks good other than the crushed blacks
It looks like you have underexposed the log profile on Sony. I can clearly see characteristic noise patterns. Probably NR algorithm destroyed the details and that is why you percieve shadows as less detialed. Not to mention huge difference in input resolution of both sensors.
Cain reference is a Camera vlog. Noice! 👍👍
Fuji look way better. Indoor colours look bad on the Sony. That Fuji 18mm f1.4 looked great
I’ve noticed that there is a bug every now and then if you turn the camera on the AF will be back focused and won’t respond until you turn it off and back on and then it should be money. I’m sure this will get ironed out in a FW update
I’d never buy a Fuji at initial launch for 2 reasons: 1) they never work right and occasionally get fixed with future firmware upgrades and 2) they typically discount the price (sometimes by a lot) if the camera does not sell well (like this one)
I honestly don’t think there was a camera issue as most of what I see in his video are human errors and lens choices. He should stay with his 18mm or get the Tamron 17-70 or the Viltrox 13mm. The 8-16mm is not a good lens as it can’t keep up with the new Fuji XH2S AF system.
The Fuj is has better greens, better DR leading to better blues in the sky, better overall color science, it's lighter, faster, better rolling shutter, better stab (IMHO), higher res (26mp vs 12mp) and WAY cheaper. As for the crappy animal AF, this is a brand new feature on a just released camera, and they are excellent about kaizen improvements (another plus for Fuj), which will probably address a lot of the other small stuff. For anything outside wildlife, I don't see how you can beat the Fuj for under $4k. I'd like to see the XH2S vs Canon R5C.
man r5c is a monstrous 8k12 bit badaas.it is the king.its not in the xh2s a7s3-4 range.damn those rf lenses are way expensive
@@editarts1 Agreed the R5c is in a whole different league in many ways, but it also falls behind the XH2S in some very important ways, mainly; terrible battery life, flimsy micro HDMI port, no IBIS, heavy, big, very expensive with very expensive lenses. Although the XH2S can't hit the upper bounds of the R5C in terms of resolution, and bit depth, how many people are actually going to shoot anything ever @ 8k 12-bit? Most people will be shooting in 4k, maybe 6.2 down sampled or cropped to 4k, or even 1080. At these resolutions, the gap between the XH2S and R5C starts to narrow. They both have similar dynamic range, great color science, great image quality, good codecs, good AF, etc.....but again, the XH2S has the advantage of very good battery life, good IBIS, a real HDMI port, and it's lighter and smaller (especially after you factor that you pretty much NEED to rig up the R5C). I still think the R5C would probably look a bit better overall and edge out the XH2S, but from the vast amount of footage I've seen from both, the XH2S might pull a surprise upset.
whenever there's a problem with the image on this channel i immediately assume user error
I always set manual white balance and color grading SONY's footage after shooting, the original skin tone on SONY is just like a nightmare. But for the Fuji , well just relax and enjoy shooting
I'll admit Sony really stepped it up with their colors, but Fuji is still king. Sony still doesn't know how to do skin tones.
In testing, Sony's colour tends to be the most accurate of any camera manufacturer.
Dear lord i'm glad I do not have fuji autofocus in my life anymore.
it's atrociously bad
You could clearly see that the autofocus issue he had at the beginning was either a human error by him or the lens he was using because when he switched to the 18mm he never had such issues. I have the XH2S and I don’t have such issues.
@@AsuquoTravelsProductions probebly yes but i’ve seen hunting in multiple videos.
I assume this is because there using old lenses but my current workflow cant afford waiting for them to refresh there lens line up.
So wether it is the camera or the lenses it makes it a non starter for me.
@@ghostapi874 You will have to ask them what lenses they are using because most of this so called video’s clearly show that the reviewers never took time to set up or understand their cameras but just rush to put out videos. I have the XH2S and it is working well for me. I already have 3 video up on my channels showcasing the camera filmed all handheld at various events.
@@AsuquoTravelsProductions Ye there is a bunch of miss information atm making it difficult.
But I really like fuji and I think they are making big strides in there cameras. However I think i’ll wait for them to mature the system now. They just started nailing there AF while sony/canon has been perfecting for years. I’ll give them that same time now.
I’ll stick with sony for another generation before considering a swap back to fuji.
What sound set up are you using for this videos?
A cheap lav mic.
I thought stabilization was better in Fuji, I don't know if it's right but you were very carefully stepping while testing Sony but not in Fuji test. But 240fps is just so bad what the hell Fuji.
I agree the Fuji IBIS was way better in the video and also for 240p I think he needs to check is settings and the bitrate he’s selecting for that.
@@AsuquoTravelsProductions in whatever settings and bitrate I have tried the 240fps was just crap.
thats exactly why i choose sony over other camera for video. f the color science , f the dynamic range, f everything if the clip lose focus.
You know that setting in Fuji cameras that lets you increase dynamic range by changing from 100% to 200% and 400%? Does that affect video? It affects RAW photos, but I’m not a videographer so I don’t know.
Yes. Can't be used in log though.

That 2:11 sequence is G.O.L.D
Damn! That 18mil is tempting.
That 18mm is magic. I suggest he stays with it and stop testing old outdated lenses.
still prefer sony x3000
One Tip with Sony! Shoot 500-1000 Kelvin lower than normal temperature, sony has a warmer sensor giving you grey skies
Also Sony sensor captures about 1 stop of light more than fuji, so you need to lower some settings on the sony to match exposures. Look how the sky is blownout and overall the image looks more washed out, it's because of that.
What did you do to the Fuji, it is blurry.
There are so many Fuji fanbois crying ☠️☠️
Is it me or on the fuji if you look close to the eyes they white is not white, it's a mix of skin tones, where on the Sony it's much more towards white?
The Sony looks "milky" and the Fuji looks crisp or sharp...to me.
Crazy how easy I spotted that the Fuji looks better, but Sony has a touch better Dynamic range. Fuji wins for overall look for sure!
Love the Fuji colors
that 240 on the fuji looks like gopro footage. why? this might actually be a dealbreaker for me. oh no.
Flog2 definitely did something… good. 👍🏽
Fuji keeps up very well today. Considering how much less you can get Fuji gear. I'd say they're pretty competitive. Sometimes the Sony colors are better but most of the time Fuji was nicer. Neutral on Sony was pretty good. Other than some focus issue at the beginning... Fuji was very solid.
The focusing issues at the beginning was either because of the type of lens he was using or human error.
Fuji isn't all that cheap if you factor in equivalent lenses. Their new primes are stellar, but build quality is inconsistent (different ring feel across the 18, 23, 33). 33mm is less sharp than a cheaper Nikon Z 50mm f1.8. Fuji 16-55 costs the same price as a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 or Sony 24-105 f4 with lens stab.
@@professionalpotato4764 There are prime lenses from Viltrox for Fuji that cost between $200-400.
@@AsuquoTravelsProductions Apart from the 13mm and maybe the 85, the rest are really poor in terms of optical quality, and Sigma offers better valued lenses on the e-mount for fairly close prices, especially on the used market.
@@AsuquoTravelsProductions We're talking about $2500+ cameras here, optical quality is all that matters. Nobody should be buying $200 lenses for their $2500 camera. Most of Fuji's high end lenses are just objectively bad value compared to full frame offerings.
It was the Fuji 8-16mm f2.8 that messed up the autofocus.
Great video bro
Fuji has better color and exposure. The focusing in the beginning is a little alarming. Not sure they are near Sony level. Every time I think about buying the Sony over the Fuj though, I just need to watch one of your videos and shudder. It's pretty crummy looking. All I want is the perfect camera...sigh....
Can you choose white priority for auto white balance on the Sony? You might like that more ☺️
It is in that.
Throwing this into the void, have you tried son'y LUTs for slog2/slog3?
solid video, F - Log, really F log profiles, i use neutral in sony and eterna in fuji, screw screwing around with these logs. WHY NOT just vlog with the new 18 F1.4 that has the improved autofocus for a "more" fair comparison VS using the old arthritic Fuji lenses ?
I was saying the same thing. I have the XH2S and use it with the new Tamron and I don’t have such issues. If he his so crazy for way lenses he can as well get the Viltrox 13mm.
Laying logs. And I do like the Fuji more. By the way, will either of these cameras record raw video internally?
The Fuji shoots ProRes internally up to 6k and 6k raw externally.
The Fuji does look better at the look out. Otherwise just horrible daylight.
one on the left right at the start looke best. however, to then switch your cameras on the screen was an interesting/ridiculous choice.
Prefer how the XH2S looks, looking at other videos on RUclips there seems to be a a very big difference in autofocus perfomance on some Fuji lenses
7:28 please tell me it’s the new wide angle Tamron Lens.
Canon 6D 2 colors looked perfect
hell no they look like shit smeared on them with horrible dynamic range. Go back dslr shooting grandpa.
Canon colors FTW!

If you are basing your buying options on this video then you are in the wrong place. I will suggest you rent or buy the camera to test for yourself. Also he was using the 10 years old outdated Fuji 8-16mm instead of staying with the more modern 18mm. I have the XH2S and love it. I don’t have any regrets as the autofocus keeps up with my video needs even in lowlight
sony was in night mode today nice red oyster footage, also 18 1.4 cinema
I love the greens of the Fuji. My Pocket 4K views all greens as though it is autumn all year, haha! Next camera will probably be Fuji.
Where is the Z9?
You probably tapped the focus mode selector button. And because it wasn't getting the additional input to actually change modes it timed out and went back to AF but didn't AF while waiting for the joystick input. Anyway, if you're not keeping it for wildlife just sell it and get the cheaper X-H2 for the vlog stuff. None of the old non-LM lenses are ever going to be able to catch up with the X-H2S' capabilites, it's 150-600 or nothing for wildlife, and the 90mm F2 for concerts
The 18mm, Tamron 17-70mm and Viltrox 13mm are some of the lenses that I have noticed that work really well with the XH2S.
@@AsuquoTravelsProductions Yeah absolutely. The Viltrox 13 is especially impressive, its performance in stickiness at F1.4 is some kind of voodoo.
0:36 you can see very good
- the sony has still more dynamic range (all the details in the clouds where the fuji did not see clouds and paint it just blue).
- you also see that the white balance for the sony is off to the warm side. And white balance has a hughe impact on colors. Like the "wow so blue" sky and straps and blacks and reds and the greeeeens
- And you see that the fuji also is set to a higher contrast and more saturation.
- Just go to PP1 (what is the same like PP off) and add contrast and saturation. Then film with the correct white balance.
(and try N-Log lut on S-log3. Darken the blacks a bit and add some saturation. sony never looked better.)
Hm all in all the fuji looks better especially if you consider the fact that it is a good stills camera also
Is your t-shirt red or orange?
I personally think the Sony looked way more cinematic, but maybe it’s the lens?
So did fuji fix the exposure stepping ?
Some zoom lenses still have a step in the middle of the zoom range, but it's been minimized quite a bit. Sadly the 16-55 is one of them and may never be fixed. The constant stepping is gone
For skin tones try Pro Neg Standard.
Dude this is so funny, love it
This channel is so unhinged and I kinda love it
Hahahahah. The focus test at 9 minutes is fricken hilair!!!!!!!
Yes, I thought it was a yarmulke until you turned it 180 degrees halfway through the video.
Great video. Fun to watch as always, but I must say I cringe when I watch you holding that A7S III in such a perilous manner. I suppose that's because I always hold my cameras in a vicelike grip. I'm so afraid of dropping them.
I think you should concentrate on the red shirt and tell us what is the real color which one matches it that would be interesting to see if you can adjust the white balance to meet that and then the other thing is that terrible autofocus on the Fuji at the dealbreaker for me maybe after they put some patches on it it might be better but I thought the dynamic range like you said it’s better on the Fuji
Personally I thought the autofocus (when he actually had it turned on) worked very well. The actual autofocus tests he did later in the video it tracked very similarly to the sony camera.
He needs to throw away that old outdated 8-16mm lens he’s using and stay with the new updated 18mm or get the Viltrox 13mm if he is so crazy for wide lens.
If you like reverse Toneh, get the Fuji.
Is this in FLOG2?
Fuji is KILLING it in background AF...
I just want a Sony A7c ii
