- 7 Segment display, but mechanical ⚙️
•••
This is my first quest in an exploration of non-light emitting, mechanical displays. This design uses a sliding segment method controlled by cams that work on the same planes as the segments. Controlled by a stepper motor through a couple of gears, I can display any number between 0 and 9

Seen loads of digital 7-segment displays, even made one myself lol; this the first analog I've come across! Awesome!
There are many different versions of this!!
Its still digital, just not using leds
@@rudeskalamanderthat is factually incorrect. A digital one uses light and ONLY light. When a 1 is inputted it only activates the 2 lights that makes it 1. The analogue one IS analogue, as it uses gears and cams. It uses mechanical movement rather than a computer chip
@@chapmontague-brown5907 digital ≠ electric, an abacus is digital, all digital means is there are finite descreet values as apposed to a continuously varying one.
In France in many metro stations there is those things displaying the current time.
However I think they might use electric magnets or motors. They are from the bodet brand
Plssss make this into a clock and share stl, this is so cool!!! (Also instructions for an electronics noob would be nice lol)
Might have to!
I think most of his designs are available for his patrons. If you have a few bucks to spare you could easily get the STLs once his project is done.
i 2nd the nomination of this being a clock!!!
down to HH:mm:ss even!
YES ANALOG 7-SEGMENT CLOCK
License on the stl?
bro, it has nice vibe as it changes numbers, it would be nice to see a fully functional clock showing the time to the second
Prolly not seconds at it takes a bit of time to finish its animation
@@okielama a fully functional clock like this would also use a fuck ton of energy and battery would be flat in a month or so
@@whkn
You could just keep it plugged
@@D9fjgbut that would be a waste of power
Why not just make it update every minute still looks nice enough with some backlight led and a nice housing which should definitely be transparent
I like that, very pleasing motion.
Agreed!
There is this clock from the 80's that just flips.
Looks smooth! Can you make them high-vis colors like Neon Yellow or Orange? Would look sweet and be easier to see!
For sure!
3M retro reflector tape... Oh yeah!
@@Engineezy How does one create custom mechanism? What books do you recommend?
@@HerezCheez an engineering degree
@@HerezCheez while the above answer seems sarcastic, there's some truth to it. You must have a lot of ideas and inspiration to have succeeded in making such design
I recommend watching some Goldberg machine videos and see how things could be used in another way than its intended purposes then get some ideas for your project
Like how this project uses 3 (or 4) layered gear to move the sides, its idea is basically : use spring to reset the number segments and gears to move the number segments to produce desired number. Then learn about what combination is needed to produce each number, then learn how to complete that in each rotation signal of the motor/servo so if we're 2 numbers away, the rotor would be sent two signals to produce the number
It's all about love for designs. If you can't really make it into prints, just use the design in the computer
Please make a clock out of these! I would definitely build one.
Trying to pull a Network Southeast clock?
I have kind of an obsession with both analogue displays and 7 segment displays, this might be the coolest project I’ve seen on this app! Absolutely beautiful execution. Great work!!
There are more than dozens of us!! I’m building my second copy of JBV’s other one, but this is much much smaller…
Maybe use a nema 17 stepper motor so you can go faster and count steps to make sure it doesn't lose track
I was thinking that! Or a servo
@@Engineezyor tiny solenoids on each segment
@@Engineezy or tiny elves in a box to move the segments
That’s some really nice and clean 3D printing results! You can barely tell it’s even 3D printed! You gotta look real close to see the layer lines! That design is also really Neato, Good job 😁👍
it would be a good idea to make a short of this mechanism counting from 0 to 9 at different speeds, because looking at it moving is so mesmerizing.
Beautiful! So, it has to cycle through all the digits from the current up until the desired one?
Yes. Maybe it can cycle backwards when that direction is shorter (from 9 to 7).
At least with this stand-alone version's gearing. In the end, it'll depend on his specific application whether it makes sense to keep it this way or to enable it to skip numbers another way.
Exactly! Hard to make it skip with only 1 motor!
@@EngineezyThe transition is really cool, restrictions lead to creative solutions.
Can it cycle backwards?
@@Engineezy ADD MORE MOTORS WE NEED MOORE
Impressive! 👏
🙏🙏🙏🙏
jesus who inveted these?
This is so cool. Great work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Not really. Works only for minutes.
Are we not gonna talk about how good that keyboard sounds? 🤯
I love this, it’s so satisfying, and it has an excellent use as both a utility and a talking piece!
“Oh, I like that clock! Where’d you get it?”
“Oh you like it? I designed it myself and 3d printed it!”
“Wow”(mentally adds more respect to person)
The only real disadvantage is the noise. I could not sleep with this going in my room.
Respect+1 lol
Haha true! Trading light for noise, impossible to win 🤣
That mechanism is amazing. So smooth visually and conceptually
"This clock looks digital"
"no it's an analog clock"
"What?"
That is pretty cool!
That is right clever.
I remember a clock from 1975 or so that had a horizontal-axis wheel with lots of hinged flaps sticking out of it. There was a catch that held the flaps back as the wheel rotated down. The two sides of the flaps were painted with top and bottom halves of different numbers, in order.
I freaking love this invention
Finally someone is using machine theory and design in a non boring very awesome way
I love me some analog tech. Like, I’m as much of a digital nerd as anyone but there’s nothing in the world as satisfying as clockwork.
This is dope… one of the coolest things I’ve seen. Figuring this out must have been satisfying as hell.
The movement between digits is absolutely gorgeous.
Very nice and mechanical, definitely feels industrially professional!
this is truly the redstone reference
I absolutely adore the fact that it has to shuffle through all of the intermediary numbers in order to get to the one it has to display! So neat!
It looks pretty energy-intensive
wicked cool!!
i wish the engineering tech program i took in college had more a focus on projects like this
You gotta just do it yourself!
An analog digital display?!? You win at life
All that it needs to become fully analog is to be a little faster and have clicking sounds
That is very nice! Such a satisfying smoothness between the digits. Top work
“Do you have an analog or digital clock?”
“yes”
This looks like something that would be used by busses in the 2000s
I find mechanical engineering so satisfying 😊
Thats so frickin cool 🤯🤯🤯 make a 3D printed analog clock with it
I love that it actually counts through all the numbers.
Can't wait to see that on a final project of yours. You are really inspiring man!
Coming soon! Appreciate it 😀
I can't wait to see the full video of this
Wow, the animations are so satisfying
This is perfect for clock projects
that looks like minecraft piston
Awsome. Files when?
this is the best thing I have seen in a while. thank God for your beautiful brain
The "Mech7" display. Awesome
Oh wow this design is so compact very impressive
The sound and movement of the machine really makes it look cooler lmao
Now you can add black parts to cover the back
Wow that takes me back. Bruh kicking it OLD SCHOOL! Love it. I have to see what you do with it.
Subbed.
We got analog clocks disguising as digital clocks before GTA 6
I would love to see 4 of these as a digital clock
the urge to spin as fast as possible
too cool.
Reminds me of time and schedule analogue sign boards on old train stations and airports
I've had an idea for an analog seven segment display for like 10 years. Having no idea how to do these things I of course haven't gotten anywhere with it... This was a really cool way to do it, and much more simple than what I had in mind.
Wow that was awesome. So subtle movements!
This little maneuver takes 51 years😂
It’s so cool I wonder if you could put it on a clock
I love that this is analog! Good stuff 👍🏾
Man the mechanics you create are insane 😮
Nice. Just like part of one of those station clocks of a certain vintage.
this would make for an incredibly goofy “analogue clock”
The perfect night clock.
That's so freaking cool...
That is dope as hell
Agreed 🤟
Very neat, good job!
British rail had clocks like this they are pretty cool and have a nice click to them
Reminds me of the noisy clackety electro-mechanical displays from airports decades ago.
Awesome, i love it, you rock!
Now that is a beautiful little piece of engineering!
Amazing
Cool! I just watched a video from This Museum is (not) Obsolete (look mum no computer), where he showed an analog digit from a "totalisator" machine - which apparently was used at dog tracks, etc. Awesome to see a much smaller (and maybe less complicated, yet still very mechanical) similar device. Really neat!
That's fantastic! Brilliant idea
i was here when you were just still making oompaloompas on a conveyor and clocks with no numbers
Simple elegance, I'd love to see variations.
Analogue + digital...nice
What is that amazingly sounding keypad tho
Now we need this mechanism to be imitated in minecraft
I love your design of all of them. This has a very nice vibe to it. I will make a clock based on your design.
The marble clock guy needs to see this
These would make a great darkroom timer
this is really really cool :3333
Oh, Posy is gonna go nuts.
It’s shit like this where I think, “damn humans are so creative”
I didn’t know what this was called until today! It looks really interesting!
That is so amazingly intuitive.
These mechanical ones were very common in the 1970s before LED ones were more common! :)
This looks like a redstone door in Minecraft
I’ve seen this like 12 times and every time I’ve been hearing “7 second” and thought who would use only 7 seconds. Read the caption and realized you were saying “segments” 😂
Next gen flip clocks!
That’s is a clock being born that many people would buy from you.
that. is. sick.
It's the coolest thing I've seen.
Ah yes, the clock where it's hidden from the enemy at night
This is really cool
🙏🙏🙏
This is so great!
Wow this is incredible I want to make one now. I love that it is incremental rather then being indexable.
The best kind of over engineering
This is AMAZING!!!!
I will always appreciate the work out in a mechanical device, way more than I do with digital stuff. Also I love your keychron numpad lol
