Kids who have not seen either Robocop - Please, please, please watch the original. You need to look for more in movies like this than a surface-level shininess. We, the consumer, CAN hold Hollywood accountable for what it shows us and if we hold them to a higher standard they CAN deliver. By sheer math, for now, they just don't have to. Making an average yawn-fest out of a recognized name is safer than making something that is fresh and creative because there are much fewer financial statistics and the market is less predictable. This means they can intentionally put in a minimum of effort and make back the amount they want with very little risk. Hold Hollywood accountable! Like the good things, shame the bad.
I too saw it first when I was very young along with Terminator 1 and other lovely gory 80s movies. I'm so grateful to my dad and friends for showing me awesome films.
I enjoyed how in the first Robocop, the corporation had some corrupt, evil people in it but as a whole OCP wasn't evil. They made the protagonist, had other plans to fix Detroit, and even helped Robocop out when the evil members were culled. Then in the remake they are all evil all the time, because money is scary I guess?

Lots of people would see it - including many teens that rarely got carded - and it got a name as a great movie. They'd then make a fortune off of video sales and rentals where parents wanted the good ones for their collection and most stores never noticed the rating before renting to kids. They'd even make another handful of cash selling the t.v. rights somewhere down the road. Nowadays, you have about a week to make all your money in the theater before everyone watches bootleg copies for free online.

As a product of the 80s, this has got to be one of my favorite examples of 80s pop culture. Shit was freaking wild. These days they wonder if video games make kids violent when Robocop was literally marketed to KIDS. It had a video game, too. But the movie made the video game look like Sesame Street.
In the 90's, I pumped many a quarter into the 3rd person arcade shooter based on the movie. The original black & green screen gameboy had a similar game. Sounds like you missed out, junior!

As a product of the 80s, this has got to be one of my favorite examples of 80s pop culture. Shit was freaking wild. These days they wonder if video games make kids violent when Robocop was literally marketed to KIDS. It had a video game, too. But the movie made the video game look like Sesame Street.
