- Applying decals on scale models for beginners. In this video I am going to explain the basics of decals application. Those are core techniques that no matter how advanced you get will still be in your toolbox.
We will go trough what tools are necessary, how to prepare our scale model, how to remove the decals from the decal sheet, how to get the decals off the backing paper, what to use to glue the decals to the surface, what is decal softening solution and what is it used for and how to get the decal to conform better.
Here are the materials that we need to apply decals:

Thank you. This is the best video on this by far as you explain 'why' with each step & give great examples of 'why' you do it. Much appreciated!
Thanks for the feedback!
A very good set of instructions, well explained and easy to follow. Thank you!
You are welcome 👍
Thanks for sharing your experience/talent with us! Learning so much from your channel.
My pleasure!
Oh so that's how you can apply them on odd shapes. I need to get a softening solution. Thanks for the helpful video 😁
A little bit of heat helps too... like from a hairdryer. But extremely carefully.
I’ve been trying to learn this for so long thank you for such a great video
You're so welcome! Cheers
Thank you mate for sharing - appreciate the graphic illustrations. Very informative. Great video. 👍🏻
Thanks mate 👍🍻
This video was the most hopeful to me; very clear steps. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Однозначно лайк. Хорошее видео. Как раз то, что и просили.
Thanks mate 👍🍻
Great video. I really appreciate your work here from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Thanks mate, Saudações 🍻
Such a good tutorial thank you. I just screwed up apply my first decal ever. Thankfully I have a spare to work with.
Thanks mate, happy to help 👍
Very informative in a short amount of time.
Thanks mate 👍🍻
Gracias compañero por hacer tus vídeos tan ilustrativos y poner subtitulado en Español.!!! Genial. Felicidades. Saludos desde México!!!
Thanks for watching mate 👍🍻
Thanks for sharing this excellent video! I really like the way you show what happens when you touch the decals after applying the solvent.
I use Micro Set and Micro Sol from Microscale for my decals and haven't seen any decals that won't conform yet. I might give Agama Hypersol a try if I can find it.
Looking forward to viewing your next project.
Thanks for watching and commenting mate! I have the suspicion they micro sol and agama hypersol are very similar... I have no real evidence though
Nicely done! 👌
Thank you! Cheers!
very very good tutorial...thank you !
Glad to know that mate, thanks 👍
This is so damn good tutorial THANK YOU for that
Thanks for watching mate!
Excellent
Thanks mate
Привет коллега! 🖐️Насколько я понимаю речь идёт о том, что декаль на лак ложится лучше, чем на краску согласен полностью! 🖐️👍🤗😜
IMO the decal needs a glossy surface... regardless of weather it is paint or varnish. Further more decal solutions can attack some paints so I say Yes, gloss clear before decals.
Sweet
Thanks mate 👍🍻
Can't you just use water? We used to just wet them and then apply them when I was a kid and I don't remember any problems. Am I forgetting something?
You can but you are playing dice with the level of adhesion of the factory adhesive. Also most of the time decals will not go in the panel lines or on complexs shapes on their own. Model making was much simpler when I was a kid :)
Thank you very much for the tutorial. I am going to apply decals on diecast metal aircraft that already have a clear coat. After applying the decals, can I clear coat the decals to further protect them? If yes, what is the best method to do this without disturbing the clear coat already on the metal body? Thank you.
Yes you can clear coat after the decals, but I am afraid it have to be the whole body, other wise you'll have hard time blending the two clear coats
Please help! What is the proper method for applying waterslide decals to clear plastic such as canopies and windows? Does the plastic need some form of clear coat first to help with decal adhesion?

@@MMScaleModels Thank you!
I have a revell kit F4 phantom 40th anniversary, decals of which are huge and cover almost the entire fuselage. Can you help me to tackle such decals. I'll highly appreciate it.
Which kit number is that? Sometimes I cut the decal to smaller pieces, which are easier to handle but each specific situation requires custom approach.
Can you use a matte varnish as well or does it need to be gloss?
Matt varnish can lead to silvering
hey man great tutorial, thank you, but i need advice or a lesson how to do 1:700 signal flags or an american flag mounted to a " wire " coming from a mast to another mast, , the decal sheet has the flags spread wide open so i have to fold them around the wire ? or do i fold them and stick the back of the flag to the " wire ",,, they are so small, maybe i need magnifying assistance ? by the way im doing a very small navy destroyer .. i couldnt even get the numbers on correctly and i am out of the number 8's because the ship hull number is 866, well i have no more 8s, since i destroyed all 6 of them, i did get the 6s on, i am about to throw the thing in the trash and never put another together, that why i visited your tutorial, its easy on flat surfaces, the flags are quite different whereas the hull numbers could be done before the ship is assembled i learned from your tutorial, and thank you,
Thanks mate, I have seen some people apply the flag decals on a aluminium foil and then trim and fold. Also the foil gives the opportunity to simulate waving flag.
@@MMScaleModels i have seen the aluminum foil technique , thank you for reminding me, that slipped my mind.
Sometimes no matter what you do the decals just suck.
True, I've had decals that did not react to softening solution at all... Just stayed on the model like stickers.
Отличные видеоуроки!!! Жалко, только,что не на РУССКОМ.
Thanks mate, there will be subtitles soon! There is some misconception amongst Russian guys, I am not Russian and I don't speak the language :)
Я титры включаю - всё понятно.
I have never found the tips you are teaching to be true'
Can you give an example?
@@MMScaleModels decals can go over any smooth paint, does not need to be clear coat or varnish. Cutting a decal always leads to decal not looking complete. The decal chemicals you use are not always strong enough to work with the thicker decals.
1. That's why said "most paints" are non-gloss, besides strong decal solutions can damage unprotected paint. 2. That's not true. 3. If hypersol can't soften a decal ( happened to me actually ) I don't know what can.
As I start to slide that decals to put it on model it gets break easily? What to do ?🥲
Some do that, you can apply varnish on the decals and let it dry before you start decaling but first try on some leftover decal.
