Dark & Light Suits in Metroid Prime

- This is a video showing all of the suits from Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - the Varia Suit, the Dark Suit, the Dark Suit with Gravity Boost, and the Light Suit - all fully functional in the first Metroid Prime!
Lately I've been spending a lot of time learning how Metroid Prime works and figuring out how to mod it. Hoping to be able to make more complicated mods soon, but for now, this is one of the first cool things I've managed to do!
Echoes's Varia Suit replaces the Power Suit. The Dark Suit replaces the Varia Suit. The Dark Suit with Gravity Boost replaces the Gravity Suit. The Light Suit replaces the Phazon Suit.
The conversion isn't exactly perfect; some of the rigs are a bit off, as you can probably tell from the video. That's because I don't have the tools for actually creating custom rigs, nor do I know how to make a decent rig, so this was done by simply taking the skins from Echoes and converting them to Prime 1's skin format, and modifying them to work with Prime 1's Samus skeletons. There's a fair few differences in the skeletons between the two games (especially the morph ball transition skeleton), so this led to the conversions being less than perfect.
The worst offender is Zero Suit Samus, and honestly I don't even know how she got screwed up so badly, but it didn't seem quite worth the effort to try to fix it. Plus it's kinda funny.
Another little flaw is that I currently don't have a way to change the morph ball's inner glow color.
No release planned at the moment; just wanted to show off something cool I did. If you wanna see more of this mod in action, I do some randomizer streams with it on every so often, and I'll consider streaming a regular playthrough with these suits sometime soon if there's some interest in it. Zero suit Samus' body deformation at the end actually makes a lot of sense considering how the Varia Suit anatomycally looks like.
Man, it would've been cool to see this expanded to have all of the Trilogy use the same Varia design.

Phazon is actually a bright substance. The fact why "Dark" Samus exist is because she has no soul.
This really highlights just how much taller Samus was in the first Metroid Prime.
Also, at 2:15 Samus is meant to shut her eyes before the transformation, but instead she widens them, which elicited a hearty kek from me.
Oh yeah, and although I already knew this, the ending really hammers home how much ZSS's face sucks compared to MP1's.
Samus is the same height in MP1 and MP2.
I don't think you notice changes in proportions.
There's no changes in proportions. She is the same height and same proportions between games.
So the changes in leg length, distance between head and shoulders, smaller head, none of these things count.
I love both of these suits. The Dark Suit looks like something Samus would wear in a Mad Max movie while the Light Suit looks sleek and futuristic
Well this is amazing! I never thought I would see something like this, great job! The suit worked and looked perfect. They also ran with the default animations really well. Sadly Zero suit was a little bizarre but props for trying and hey it was really cool that her eyes and stuff were moving that was awesome.

Also that pose after getting the phazon suit looks so damn goofy and it bothers the hell out of me whenever I play the US version of the game.
JAP/PAL versions, and the trilogy version. They don't have the pose. Samus just sort of stops writhing in pain.
I guess bathing in Phazon had some negative side effects on Samus despite the fact that it granted her the Phazon (or in this case, Light) Suit.
Poor girl. She should have that checked by a doctor.

Well, if we could have the Prime 2 Varia replace the Prime 1 Varia, with texture swaps of the model for the Gravity and Phazon suits, I would be happy. Bonus points if it's in the Trilogy version.

Ok so first and formost, i love all the effort that went into this. It really feels like Dark and Light suits were apart of Prime 1 all along. And ZSS gave me a really good laugh :D
But jokes aside, i need to ask something: Having seen Prime 2's Samus face in Prime 1's cinematic, am I the only one that strongly prefers the face we got in OG Prime 1? It feels a lot more, idk. Natural? Human? Less Anime?

I'd like if Samus' Varia suit from Metroid Prime 1 had the same design from Hunters, Echoes and Corruption and then shared with the Gravity Suit and Phazon Suit as for her Power Suit the only difference would be the helmet.

Cool, but you couldn't make the zero suit look less scary? I'm going to have nightmares about that. Still, great job. Maybe you should do the suits from Metroid Prime 3. Or dark samus.

There are two types of cutscenes.
Pre-rendered and In-engine.
Pre-rendered cutscenes are made using an animation program and are stored as videos in the game files.
In-engine cutscenes use programmed animations within the game to play out a scene.
retro studios seems to hate pre-rendered cutscenes with a passion, as ALL cutscenes in the prime trilogy are in-engine.

Can you try doing Dark Samus? Im sure that the Dark Samus in Morph Ball mode, Arm cannon, and hand will be the problems though.
7:11 Proof the power suit is unrealistically proportioned.
The light suit. A mix of Luminoth and Chozo technology. The suit's design showcases both cultures. One flaw with the suit, however: it does NOT protect Samus from direct contact with phazon. Not sure if this went noticed or not. But in Prime 1 and 3 the Phazon and PED suits, respectively, did just that. You would think the fusion suit of both those races would be able to provide immunity. The PED suit from Corruption was actually an inferior version of the phazon suit using the federation's design schematics. With it Samus could dive freely into phazon pools and restore life energy. Of course one could argue that it was a side effect of Samus being corrupted directly as well. But it's still curious that the light suit doesn't offer protection at all.
I shall nickname it: Metroid Prime 1.5

If you ever plan to make a mod that puts the Metroid Prime 3 suits into this game, I have 2 suggestions.

Power Suit = Varia Suit
Varia Suit = Varia Suit with Grapple Lasso
Gravity Suit = PED Suit 10% Corrupted
Phazon Suit = PED Suit 75% Corrupted

nice job! if you get at it, you might want to mod dark samus in MP2 and MP3 to look like metroid prime's essence had grabbed the light suit (like shown here). ;)
I still notice that Samus's rear stands out in the Dark suit. From the abdomen of the dark suit down honestly looks like the influence of a swimsuit on the actual suit. Ever notice the nicely rounded and shiny buttplates and how the abdomen and legs of the suit look almost like tanned skin? 6:17

I honestly like the Phazon suit better than both the light and dark suits.
Terminal Meowmaritus, I just like the red highlights, and the combination of silver and black. Plus, the design of the shoulder pads for the black and the chest for the light look stupid.

That'd be tricky. Samus was larger in Prime 1 than 2, which isn't much of an issue (*cough* Zero suit *cough*) as models can stretch. But importing Prime 1 Samus models into 2 would compac them, making Samus look crushed.
Is there a way for you to import the Prime 2 Varia suit into Prime 1?

I mainly meant for replacing the Varia suits themselves (as opposed to having the MP2 Varia replace the MP1 Power suit), but I can't complain.
Screwy Yeah, the work for that is essentially done already. The model is already rigged to the MP1 skeleton so it's just a matter of choosing which suit to swap it over.

What I really want is to be able to download a save file of Echoes with the Light Suit unlocked from the very beginning, not just the skin but the actual power.
i always thought they put the Light Suit in really way too late in the game so you barely even get to enjoy it. the reason I said that is because I don't want to spend hours and hours sequence breaking to get the early light suit

Reverse engineering the model/skeleton/skin formats and writing a tool to convert the model from Echoes's format to Prime 1's format, then a tool to modify the Samus skin files from Echoes to work with the Samus skeleton from Prime 1.

Hey, is there a way to tell what CMDL's are what? I know how to convert them into 3d files I can work with, but my biggest issue is that I have no clue what file is what before I convert them since they're not exactly named. So like, I have no clue which file is the Power Suit, Varia, Ridley, Geemer, etc. Any help with that?
The only real way to tell is to open a map in the editor and then check what models are being used by different objects. Sorting by size is also a good way to quickly find more significant models. Power Suit is f39476f2, Varia Suit is 776c1a96, Ridley is b2b41738, and I don't know Geemer off the top of my head.
It will be nice if you release the patch. You tested this game and it look fine. So why you won't release the patch?
Because there's no good way to distribute it currently

***** Distributing files that wouldn't require setup would require distributing huge files that contain tons of unrelated files. Distributing only files that need to be changed would require a ton of setup (I know what I'm doing and it still took me a good 30 minutes+ to get it set up). So I don't intend to release anything at least until there's a more robust method in place to actually distribute them.
I modded a Sonic game a long time ago to change Sonic into Metal Sonic. Despite it being a small mod, I had no way to pack the modded files into a folder to distribute for download, which may (or may not) be a similar situation you have, Paraxade0. I said that in the video description and even put annotations about it in the main video... people STILL demanded a download for it and questioned why I couldn't do it. It's annoying lol. People ask, "Why not?/What do you mean?" and I just ignore them, anymore, lol. If I say I can't do it, I CAN'T DO IT! XD

Too bad we'll never get Mario 64 type mods that adds entire campaigns to the game for gamecube titles like Metroid Prime or Mario Sunshine
Pretty sure those already exist for Mario Sunshine and I'm developing tools to do it for Metroid Prime.

+Paraxade0 How exactly do you go about making tools that allow you to make custom levels for games that don't have officially released mod tools? I've been wanting to mod Star Fox Adventures but I don't have any experience in anything other than 3d modeling.
xTankbeast If there's no existing tools then you're gonna need some programming knowledge :p pick up a programming language, learn a 3D rendering pipeline, and start figuring out how the game's file formats work.
