- Just a multiplayer past its time? Or is there something more hiding in this game? ...not really but let's take a look at it anyway!

I remember playing this on my DS in high school. I didn't even have the game, but I leached off my friend's copy with download play, which is an amazing feature I wish was still around with modern consoles.
You called it 2 years early for Metroid Prime 4.
😱
I'll add this for others since it was only partially mentioned but in multiplayer each of the hunters had a unique effect with "their" weapon. Trace turns invisible, Kaden gets the disorientation effect, Weavel had a bigger aoe with more push and less fire rate, Noxus gets a field/wall shaped shot, Spire burns people longer with a bigger aoe, Sylux got life drain and for some reason Samus just had homing on her missles. One other thing is that in prime hunter mode, the prime hunter gets all of those abilities outside of the missiles and those that conflicted with the mode (like Trace's and Sylux's).
The Prime Hunter does get the homing, IIRC.
He also gets Weavel's Battlehammer projectiles, but not his reduced fire rate.
God, I adore this little DS game. It's a wonderful experience if you can play with friends, and you get more accustomed to using the additional weapons in the main game after awhile.
A quick comment on Gorea's first form. He cycles through different weapons, which makes him weak to an opposing one. Using this makes the battle more engaging and far easier.
Great to see so many views on this. Happy 5000 subscribers bro!
Man. I should've gotten this game when it was new. The multiplayer sounds so much fun to play with all your classmates in the schoolbus.
I love this game so much. Watching this makes me want to download a DS emulator. Your right, I was blown away back then by what the DS could do back then as well. Nice old school tv in the back.
This video actually convinced me to add Prime Hunters to my list of Wii U Virtual Console games to get before the eShop closes. I played it and I actually really enjoyed it, despite having no way to experience the multiplayer without bots, and it kinda sucks because I've heard that it's really good and fun. Great video 👍🏻
Really glad you enjoyed it! I definitely have to reccomend checking out the a few corners of the fan community, as I know there are some groups dedicated to keeping servers running through emulators and such, might be worth giving a look so you can get a chance to experience the multiplayer!
@@Wayneisboss I'll be sure to check it out sometime to see what I've been missing out on. Thanks 👍🏻
With the topic of you believing that the other bounty hunters will take an octolith if you die to them, you are in fact correct. I also love playing this game. I actually no longer have a DS to play this but using an emulator, I play it on my computer instead. Sure the gameplay aspects at times can feel very repetitive, I still like how it turned out in the end and the story is, in my opinion, engaging which is exactly what I like to see in a game.
imagine a hunters remake on switch in the vein of zero mission or samus returns
Actually though? Please.
Like, we have a League of Legends clone with Pokémon, can we get a dedicated Metroid shooter again?
Anything Nintendo and metroid I'm usually in 1000%
If they did that, it'd be cool if they added more characters for the multiplayer like the three hunters from Prime 3: Rundas, Gor and Gandrea. A new version of a mech from Federation Force and Dark Samus as well.
Ayyy congrats on 5K!
The online servers are STILL online, players nowadays use Wiimmfi to play (what they use for Mario Kart Wii). Lots of online footage on my channel.
Guys since hunters came out before prime 3 this means that prime 3 is actually prime 4
Bro your energy in the review is great ! News host vibes ! Dig it
This morning's podcast episode call to action already seems to be affecting the YT algo :D. I think this was the first video of yours I recall being near the top of my recommendation page.
Really glad you saw it! Honestly this is still one of my favorite Metroid videos haha
Metroid appears to grow more and more. I think it's time to ask what else the franchise can do. Think about it. Nintendo has a franchise in their hands with which they could do a lot more, for starters they could always make an FPS game with the Federation and Space Pirates as playable factions, maybe even the Kriken Empire. They could make an RTS set in the Metroid Galaxy. There's much to work with here, and a lot of blank slates that wait to be filled. Not only that the WII mote and hte Joycons are perfect mouse alternatives. I'm surprised noone has ever tried to make an RTS for the Wii when they made one for the XBox (Halo Wars 1/2).
Great video!, it’s crazy that a Metroid prime game could work on a DS. Reminds me of Spider-Man 3 on the psp.
The multiplayer online experience was really fun early on, but after a while it really sucked running into so many hackers and people using exploits. If patches were possible just to keep that under control, I would have been so happy
One of the greatest games and possibly the best Metroid game (for me)
TIL the wii u could play more games than i thought
I’m glad I still have my copy with the box and instruction manuals even though I sucked at it as a kid but great video man! I still think the game looks pretty good I like how ds samus looks in a novel way
Love the Meteor Herd music in the intro
I'd welcome a remake of this game.
Yeah this is a pretty accurate review. I do think it and other reviews tend to hang too much on the missing potential though- I definitely think it's a compromised experience compared to the full games, but it's still fascinating nonetheless that it just... EXISTS. And it's not too shabby- I think the main campaign is short enough that, if people use the modern recent mouse and keyboard mod, it's a must play for fans of the Prime games looking for a bit more.
There were times playing it I was bored, other times I found myself so immersed it felt like I WAS playing a console game, and that's kinda impressive for what it is. Its short length also makes up for the lack of exploration since you're never left feeling like you're not making progress at least. Not usually anyways, there are some slower moments.
And when it gets original I think it's really cool. The way ideas aren't fully explored gets my mind racing, feeling like I'm only seeing a glimpse of a story, which is interesting.
Multiplayer doesn't have online anymore but it does have bots.
@5:00 I felt the cramping but I just thought I was getting old 🙃
Known for its excellent mutiplayer that was ahead of Nintendo games today
I’m ok with the name “Search Action” just so we can move away from having the Genre name be tied to a single game franchise
Fair enough, but I feel I should point out that Metroidvania actually gets it name from two series, Metroid being the more obvious one. It alongside Castlevania formed the basis for the genre so I think it makes sense. The genre term "Roguelike" actually ties into just one game more because it's named after a game called Rogue.
If we're going to be nit picky on genre names, Metroid isn't actually a Metroidvania. Metroidvania came about from the Castlevania Metroid-likes since they added in things like rpg mechanics like item drops, stats, changeable equipment, level ups and so on. We could just use exploration action game with some word for power up progression.
10:01 Funny that you say this game "really does just feel like one of the most outright linear experiences in the series" - Hunters is probably the most non-linear Metroid game there is. You have to get the first two Octoliths in that specific order, but once you've done that, you can actually get the remaining six in any order you wish-all that's stopping you from that point is needing the other hunters' weapons (which you can go get without needing to get any more Octoliths). Of course, the game's repetitive structure means this non-linearity isn't really that interesting, but it does exist.
I played this on the ds so nostalgic w game
No Dr.Pepper Cream Soda this time? 😿
I ran out, gotta grab more from the store ;-;
@@Wayneisboss How you feel about Pibb Xtra? 😼
@@Wayneisboss how do you feel about it?....
Pibb Xtra
Never got to play the multiplayer myself, although i wanted to try the other characters so badly. Just didn't know anyone else that care about metroid besides myself.
The multiplayer can still be played locally.
We need MPH2 on big screen
if a cartel or similar organisation placed you in a room with a knife or a stylus controlled DS fps, you'd know how to use the knife and possibly fail the stylus heavy experiment the cartel had in mind
I'd also point out any scan requirement from hunters for 100% is just as bad as half of it is albimic scans only visible from the scan visor, at least in any other prime game you'd see what something was before scanning it, like ammo or an enemy or universe willing, lore. Hunters, you're not so lucky, anything _could_ be lore and nothing gives you a clue to if it is, only the scan visor knows where as something like the original prime had obvious chozo text littered around some areas
the best thing Hunters did was introduce the titular hunters that are playable in multiplayer after seeing them, I get the same sort of feeling from halo for some reason though that's more on choosing levels in Multi Player
one of the worst things in single player though is trace, he's introduced in one of the best Hunter Vs Hunter sections of the game and fought after he uses the special property of his morph while on a time limit, fuck this entire guy for that. the Hunters are fought on random planets in the game after that which adds to what the idea for multiplayer is but fuck trace's entire triskelion. even sylux's trip wire seems fair compared to how single player Trace places his morph form
Wait. Weavel was left for dead on planet Zebes? Is he the dead guy you see outside Kraid's lair in Super Metroid?

Great catch, but not likely. The Prime games take place very early in the Metroid timeline, all set prior to Metroid 2 and Super Metroid so it's more likely he was a pirate she battled in Zero Mission
@@Wayneisboss Maybe he was the one who jumped in front of the ship Samus escaped with, if that impact didn't kill the guy it certainly would have injured him greatly.
@@fieratheproud Hahaha that would be amazing, that's canon to me now
I felt like this game was a massive rip-off and one of many times where I'd feel horribly betrayed by a Nintendo DS entry in franchises I loved. I remember actually regretting getting Metroid Prime Hunters instead of Tetris DS because I really enjoyed the First Hunt Demo. This game has none of the power fantasy of being Samus Aran. You do not feel like you are getting stronger or gain any sort of intimacy with the Olymbic System's linear corridors. Hell, there's not even all that much enemy variety, nor does this game do anything to further the story of the Chozo-developed jellyfish bioweapons.
Instead, it offered Arena shooting over Nintendo Wifi Connection; a feature I treated like I did the Metroid Prime 2 Multiplayer and just ignored it. At that point, the last FPS I had played for Multiplayer was Red Faction and I had fallen out of love with the genre.
It'd be like if Hollow Knight Silksong came out and was a platform fighter with what amounts to a protracted version of the Great Maze from The Subspace emmissary was in it.
Great video
This game was so awesome. Easy enjoyable controls. Really fun online play.
I wished the ranking system for online was a bit harder.
This you wants to see prime hunters dead. He is deleting comments
A little confused cause I haven't deleted any comments? Haven't even seen any on this review that are really all that bad
Have any of your personal comments disappeared? I may need to check to see if RUclips flagged any automatically as I know the system will do that sometimes
Well me and some others were posting a Hunters discord link. Can you maybe write it as a comment or something and pin it ?
@@sf6524 Probably can't write it as a comment, links will often get comments deleted automatically by RUclips but if I can find the Discord and verify it's legitimacy I could probably add it to the video's description!
This is probably the metroid game that needs a remake the most at the moment.
If any Metroid gets a full Remake it will be Super Metroid.
@@robertkenny1201 Probably. It may be my favorite game, but it can be improved.
@@matthewschultz7390 Resident Evil 4 needed a Remake even less the Super Metroid did.
@@robertkenny1201 it aged well it doesn’t need a remake
@Jesse Gartung So has Resident Evil yet its getting a Remake, why is its such a big deal if Super Metroid gets a Remake?
You can still play offline with multiplayer which is my favorite personally I completely disagree with you I recommend Prime hunters just because you can't play with online players doesn't mean you cannot still play with multiplayer you can still play with multiplayer just offline with other bots and everything which are just as challenging as you would in online see I'm tired of games that only have online play it's good to have offline multiplayer game
Overall Hunters was probably the most forgettable Metroid game for me. I liked it as a kid, but don't remember ANYTHING about it other than the multiplayer.
A great game with the worst controls I have ever used.
You don’t recommend it? Wtf
Your take on this game is trash. You didn't make use of the other weapons you received, which is on you, and the Gorrea fight becomes a LOT easier and quicker if you had implemented the other weapons, instead of just using the regular beam. As for the adventure? The game was amazing. Look at all that it was FOR A DS GAME. It was brilliant, but you "can't recommend" it? Anyone with a DS/3DS should easily take a crack at it, because it's worth the time to play through it.
Hunters is the second best of the Prime series. Prime 3 is cinematic but both it and 2 kinda stink compared to Prime 1
Ok the gameplay on its own wasn't bad, but Prime 2 and 3's campaign are absolutely not worse than Hunters' singleplayer.
