    It’s 2024 and hopefully you haven’t already given up on your goals for the year.
    Today, we’re going to talk about the best and worst ways to set goals. We’ll talk about the factors that make you more likely to achieve your goals, why you lose motivation by week three, and the most common error everyone makes when deciding to change themselves for the better. We’ll also be sharing some of our personal goal disasters along the way to learn what not to do.

    Summary for people like me who already forgot everything:
    1) don't set goals that call for such a drastic change that you won't be able to achieve it.
    2) Start by getting one goal done, focus on that and when you've got it down you can move on.
    3) set up a system that will make the goal happen. if you don't have a plan you plan to fail.
    4) In order to achieve a goal you have to make the process enjoyable
    5) Your goal has to be underlain by a strong personal value, not by a desire to impress others. Otherwise you won't have the motivation to continue.
    6) set rules for yourself. ex. lights automatically turn off at 9

    I started working with these two questions and started pealing the onion layer by layer and my life has changed in ways unimaginable once I started working backwards and things started to fall in their places..! I now get up at 6 am each morning, hit the gym each day, read 100 pages a day, started doing meditation, quit alcohol , deleted my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, I quit eating sugar and processed food and I started doing OMAD..At age 46, I feel like I am on top of the world..!

      @@tricky1805 I do OMAD paleo-keto (25g or 5%carbs, 90-100g or 25% protein, 70% fat or as close/max i can bring myself). there is no 'eating window' per se because you eat once between sleeps. When i first did this in 2018, my natural eating time was anytime around midday-early afternoon, Until last may, i had struggles adhering to diet and put weight on.
      Since may 2023, i take 2 weeks every season to eat high carbs so i dont get hyper-sensitive to carbs and break ketosis, eating fruit n starchy roots once a month for up to 3 days because of female hormone cycle. This autumn ive been eating in the evening around 7pm, but if im not hungry/interested/distracted it can be as late as 10pm, or not at all.
      as a 5'6" tall medium boned woman who is 41 and on the overweight-normal borderline, sedentary due to MECFS and thus not working, I typically eat 2 slices of DIY flaxseed bread and butter/spread and equivalent of 100g protein or 2 burgers and equivalent to a bag of 2-person stir-fry veg.
      So for me, i cook/prep the portion amounts id do for 2 people who eat normally.
      But honestly, you just gotta experiment, shave off an extra 30-60 mins every half week-week and assess how ur body feels energy and digestion wise. It maybe u reach a stage whereby your adaption is faster than your body can adjust, so just go back to the previous for a few weeks and then try again. Also, sometimes fibre can be the culprit re digestion, there's 2 types and it maybe you need to decrease one and favour the other.
      Now my metabolism is flexible, thanks to my regular cycling in and out of ketosis. 2 days ago i was high carb all the xmas sugary treats and 3 meals a day, between midday and 8-10pm, partly cos i was antibiotics. Yesterday i ate a tin of lamb stew with psyllium husk instead of mash potato around 3pm and later ate a bag of roasted parsnips and half a bag of roasted asparagus around 7pm
      It is currently 11pm as i write and iv only just now gotten hungry, so i will make myself some flaxseed porridge so i can sleep sans hunger pangs. That is all i will have eaten since yday 7pm. It is all i will need to eat because of the last 2 weeks being high carb, as long as i eat nutritiously in the days when i am hungry

    Fucking love that Mark is doing podcasts! I’d disagree slightly with Mark saying that someone’s recognition of you doing something cool like speaking a language lasts 3 seconds. I speak Spanish and Portuguese (lived in MX 2 years, wife is Brazilian and I’ve spent thousands of hours with tutors and ~4 months living in Brazil), and at work as an ER Nurse in SoCal and now Chicago, I am interpreting Spanish constantly for everyone from Doc’s to all the support staff, and the respect/renown I get for it over time is immense, because everyone knows how hard it was for me to do and because it is exceptionally useful. The Latinos on staff especially love it, because I am the only white guy they’ve ever seen speak fluent Spanish, and because for some reason native speakers fucking hate constantly getting asked to interpret after a while, whereas I fucking love it because I worked so hard to be able to do it.
    And the once in a while a Brazilian wanders into my ED, the staff’ll be like, “Hey we heard you speak Portuguese? Is that true? Can you help us out with this patient?” And then I go and do it and everyone is blown away that I can speak that too and the respect raises even more.
    Also, the patients/families are often incredibly grateful, because in a way I’m guiding them through a strange, stressful journey in a foreign land, and something about the fact that the only gringo they’ve ever met speaking Spanish is doing it makes a different sort of impact. And they let me know how much it means to them. It’s very gratifying.
    And of course, with my wife’s Brazilian family, not only do they respect the fuck out of it, I am able to have a far deeper and normal relationship with them than I would ever be able to have without speaking Portuguese.
    So, I’d say Mark is right in that often the wow’s you get from people are very transient and don’t mean much, however, if you are in an environment where you are able to use that skill consistently over time to help them, that transient wow becomes a much more solidified respect for the skill and your mastery of it.

      Well you are in an environment that allows you to make use of the language, he clearly states that he is not. If I liked and learnt german no one will even know, there are hardly any Germans in my country, I don't have plans to move to Germany either, I could tell people I know German but it will be a skill that is of no use to anyone so naturally the'll forget.

    I watched a video about the book "The 12 week year" and it is the only system that works for me. I divide the year into quarters (4 months). Then, I think about what can I do during those 4 months. This helps a lot on controlling anxiety. I set up 1-2 goals, not more. I think about 1-2 goals for each quarter. Then, I write down (brain dumping) all the micro actions that I can complete weekly, which are related to my goal. I don't check-u daily. There will be days I'll be more productive than in others. No rush, just completion. As I complete my tasks, I'll have the number of actions that I can get done by the week (not daily!), as well as a clean board, every week. :) This helps me stop thinking about the goals and focus on the tasks alone. I was able to reduce anxiety by leaving everything on one paper, without a schedule other than "this week" and focus on those actions alone. By the end of the first quarter, I'll be able to complete the goals for that 4 month year. :) It worked last year and It'll work again. :) I'm always happy to see my actions disappear from the paper. :D I enjoy my completion system a lot and I hope it might serve anyone in the world as well.

    What helped me accept and actualize the time it takes to make a true change is the realization that I've become who I am and developed the habits I have, both bad and good, over 37 years. I'm not going to change that in 3 weeks.

      @@LewisKillar That is a big question and would take a big answer that honestly, I'm still working on. In the immediate though, I think the first step is to recontextualize or reframe your perspective.
      Discipline isn't something that is turned on or off. It's not having the willpower to get off the couch or not eat the cookie. What it IS is the ability to be mindful of your choices and make the decision that will lead to the best result for you.
      Is getting off the couch better for you than staying on the couch? Depends. If you're a couch potato than yes, it probably is. But if you're a fitness "freak" that goes to the gym regularly and never misses a work out, it's going to take more "discipline" to stay on the couch to rest and heal than it will to get up and go to the gym.

      @@obtuseangler768 - I'm glad you learned this at 41. You are probably less than halfway through your life. I'm almost 73 and have a disabling illness. I finally "woke up" to this around age 60, but was already sick. Now, I just try to tell other women not to spend all of their youth helping someone else build, but build what they want first, and if you marry, make sure you have a partner who will help you, just like you help them. I wish you the best with your next chapter in life!

    As a military spouse, my resolutions don’t only happen at the new year, they happen every time we move somewhere new or every time my spouse deploys. Just like you guys said, changing too many things at once can lead to a downfall. I have learned now that a huge life change is not the time to add on extra pressure that I made up. My new goals for those life changes are to embrace the new location, embrace the solitude and maaaaaybe I can add something new if I handled those things.

    Drew! Sleep prep starts when you wake up , get the important things done (usually), clean the house, make sure everything is organized (and if you have not already done Marie Kondo, I highly recommend it especially because you mentioned that sleep is some thing that has eluded you for a long time. I find diving into her book reading it from cover to cover and when the sentiments in it start resonating. It will help you clear your space which of course you guys are enlightened enough to know that there’s a huge emotional component to everything… and addressing our living space and the things that have accumulated in that space is profound). And yes, general sleep hygiene and I find the 3,2,1 countdown is very direct and specific… wrap up meals 3 hours before bed, 2 hours before wrap up drinking and 1 hour before log off all screens.     To help with the sleep hygiene I recommend setting a bedtime alarm. When it goes off, stop what you're doing and immediately get into your 30 minute wind down routine. That could be reading in bed, or getting a shower and sticking on the PJs - whatever it is :)

    It’s taken me so many years to really understand that I have to be humble enough to admit I need to aim far lower in setting goals. Jordan Peterson says to keep aiming lower and lower until you reach a point where the goal will still push you outside of your normal capabilities, yet be something you’re actually able to accomplish. If you’re still not able to accomplish a goal, it’s either because it’s not low enough, and/or it’s not something you actually really want to accomplish. I think one of the sources of our self-delusion in goal-setting, is that we compare ourselves to others, and feel pressure to catch up asap. But it usually backfires on us.

    My and myself we were all sick during the Christmas break this year. Before Christmas I was drinking 2 Bodoms of coffee EVERYDAY - LOVE MY COFFEE. But getting sick changed something in me and now I can not stand the taste or smell of coffee and I'm kinda greatful for it because I was drinking WAY TOO much coffee and I knew that I had to cut back but just didn't have the willpower to quit... In a way I'm kinda glad that I got sick because I had to quit and I knew quitting coffee was going to be tough! I completely gave up drinking alcohol last year after watching you and your journey to quitting. As a result of quitting alcohol and now coffee I lost 10 pounds during the Christmas break and I actually feel a whole helluva lot better.... If I can keep it going I'll be stoked!!!

    Really enjoyed this video! It's funny that it came just after me and my wife finished setting our goals for 2024. I believe putting setting a specific time and measures make them more tangible, but making all of them fun has been challenging!     I completed a marathon the year I turned 50! If I can do it, so can you! Skipping an occasional short run and cross-training instead is ok. Your recovery will improve over time. Make sure you're foam rolling and/or using a massage gun. Also, increase your mileage slowly to avoid injury!

    Quitting caffeine is tough but it's doable. I just feel really sluggish even 3-4 months afterward. But I'm going to try again. It's definitely the hardest drug to quit.

    Sleep/caffeine are so entangled This year I'm doing 2 things to correct: 1st cup is a reward after exercising in the AM otherwise must be delayed till 11am-allowing my natural chemistry to get first 'crack' at me. Apparently exercise magnifies and prolongs the surface benefits of coffee. Second is I'm in bed 1 hour prior to when I want to be asleep - 11pm. Even if I don't fall asleep on time, being lateral early is the only victory the body signals really care about. Working so far. 🤞

    I did my first last year, booked in again this year. I loved the training and the people I run with, the event was pretty satisfying as well 😊

    One thing about fixing your sleep that I want to add: I was actually in the camp of "I need it to be 100% dark so I need a night mask". However, I sort of trained myself to sleep with the curtains a little bit open so it's not pitch black dark at night. It really helped me get up in the morning with the sun shining into my room (I still need an alarm usually but you get into the "getting up mood" a bit easier). Cause falling asleep is very hard to control, but you can much easier control when you wake up.
    Obviously will probably not work for people with insomnia, but that might require some medical attention anyway. Just for the "general public" I propose trying both pitch black and a letting some light in for a week or 2 each and see what works best. Everyone is different after all.

      You just clarified why my sleep advice is a good system to use, which is something I've always been unable to articulate well. It's always easiest to control waking up, controlling when we get sleepy can be nigh impossible without medical intervention.

      Totally agree. I like a little light to wake me up in the morning too. I use an eye mask to help me fall asleep and it usually comes off by the time morning rolls around, so it works well for me. But to your larger point: do what works best for your and your situation, for sure.

    Great episode as usual, I truly really think you're doing a service to everyone here, Mark. I love whenever you mention your wife, cause I think she's great and super inspiring, besides being Brazilian like me ;) lol.
    Anyway, I've made sleep my priority in the last years and improved it a lot (used to be an undiagnosed chronic insomniac), and I think Drew has done the hardest things which is to not drink alcohol (terrible for sleep) and drink coffee after 12pm (I'm not there yet), so there's hope!
    A more or less consistent bedtime is a great next step, enabling the Sleep Schedule + Downtime at night on iPhone helps to shut down your phone at a certain hour, then jump into Kindle, turn off the lights, cold bedroom etc.. what I would advise on the multiple cups of coffee is: find a really good decaf, and make sure that most of your cups are from this. I think if that's your biggest struggle, it can be easy to overcome. And if you need more practical tips on sleep and come to Europe sometime, hit me up, I'm good at it and single 😂😂 lol. Good luck!

    You're highly underestimating my ego. It's gotten me to lose 40 lbs on Keto since June and keep it off. It's getting me up at 5am to meditate, and it got me to quit drinking 5 months ago and finally get my finances sorted out. I thank my ego everday. It gives me all the fuel I need. I save the profound stuff for life's real challenges. The ego can handle this small stuff.

    From my experience, goals shouldnt be made to seek validation. By doing that there is a inner issue of not feeling worthy. I think that should be resolved first and then any goal you set will be true to you and there shouldnt be any failure. Getting validation externally dosent make sense, society is changing all the time, so you would constantly be chasing that validation like that donkey and carrot analogy

      I agree. But for me, the only way I was able to resolve the need to seek validation was to try at that and fail a lot until I truly understood the folly in that.

      This is true, it’s a key part of self determination theory. Validation is outside of oneselfs control and therefore according to SDT lacks autonomy.

    Hey Mark! Try Injinji socks for the blisters on your feet when training for the marathon. Made a whole lot of a difference for me in hiking and trail running.

    In 2013, I weighed 107 kilo’s (235 pounds). I lost 55 pounds in a year and celebrated that by running my first marathon in 2014 (3h12m).
    I called myself a marathon-runner from then on. By 2019, weighing 120K/265P, I caught myself selling my own bullshit. I never stopped running, but I didn’t do that distance again since 2014. So I either had to stop telling people I was a marathon-runner, or I had to do it again. I’m not big on “all talk no walk”-people and I felt a part of me becoming that.
    I ran the Brussels marathon in 2019 weighing 265 pounds (4h56m). It was pouring rain for 90% of that race. My inner legs started bleeding from friction (from overweight) after 10 miles. I screamed so loud when I crossed that finish line.
    Running a marathon is an experience like no one else. Having (just) ran a marathon also.
    It’s gonna suck at a certain point. But you can do this. You push through. Go get ‘em, bro.
    (Sidenote: my weight is once again my main goal now. It’s a battle I’ve fought before. And I’m fighting it wiser now. I’m at 110K, coming from 118K, and this year it’s on. I sent my goal-mail!)

    Mark, pursuing goals with others is a core component of self determination theory, the relatedness element. The idea that you’re part of a group. So a decent chunk of research on it! You probably had it, just didn’t link the two.

    Also, your ‘why’ is so important because if you just want a six pack for vanity reasons, you’re just feeding your ego which will eventually backfire whereas if you want a six pack as one of the results of being fit, healthy and strong, that will serve you

    I started slowly replacing my regular coffee with decaf. I took about 2 weeks, i think, before i was completely on decaf. Now im caffeine free! Try the wean and replace method.

    Personally, I've only set 3 small goals that i know i can achieve for the whole year. I don't overdo it anymore coz it becomes unattainable, and you'll fail.
    I've set a goal to travel twice , 1 local trip, 1 international trip , pay off my $500 debt to my mom, and that's it.
    Then just save and invest whatever extra cash I'll get from my job and business from july 2024 to December 2024. No pressure or stress by saying I'll save $10,000 when i know i can't.

    If your goal is for the perfect body, then you already in success category, at least financially, but it's still great to have a goal.
    I have already met someone doesn't have a goal and its nightmare to me & everyone around them.

    Just to add on some tips for drew and his sleeping problem. Everyone is different and maybe it might take only a few changes like no screen time in bed or no caffeine after 3/4pm. The important thing isn’t necessarily when to go to sleep but how to maintain being asleep. Like mark said having a blacked out room so that no light gets in is very important and also to rest the mind before bed so that you go to sleep relaxed and not restless from being on your phone, so reading a book even a boring one works great really helps the mind to relax which naturally makes you tired. Exercising or showering before bed can make it harder to fall asleep because those activities actually wake you up. If you get in a hot shower and then get out and it’s cold that will wake you up which isn’t the goal.

    The worst and the best thing for my habits were entering medical school.
    At the beggining I got so stressed that gained lots of weight due to an adaptation process that messed my diet and exercises schemes.
    But now at the end of it Im leaving with much more good habits then before.

    Drew, in a certain podcast with Joe Roland, Andrew Huberman talks about how he makes his sleep fun through dreaming, or at least something to look forward to.
    Also, from listening to other people on RUclips, a bit of carbs before bed seems to help with melatonin production.

    I like what you said about being patient with yourself. I push myself hard to be better everyday. I make a lot of progress but it’s a lot of extra stress and not a lot of self compassion. O btw.. that diet is terrible. I’m eating veggies and chicken and it’s incredibly boring. Effective but boring.

    I have the dame problem with blackouts and hotels. Now I always travel with one of those eye blocking masks and it saved my vacations. You should try them, some of them are very comfy.

    people tend to place conditions on themselves rather than set goals.
    Move clearly in the direction you desire but don't get attached to ever getting 'there' and certainly don't base your fulfilment on it!

    I hate it when people say; get rid of all the unhealthy food in your house and don't buy unhealthy food. But I don't live alone. I have 2 roommates who are also overweight and buy tons of cookies and candy and crap. I've tried to get them to stop. We've had dozens of conversations about it. We've fought about. We all have the same doctor and I took pictures and ratted them out and even that didn't get them to stop. I even asked them to hide it all in the pantry and that lasted until the next trip to Costco. So, now what do I? Just give up and wait until I die of heart disease? Any other bright suggestions? Without my friends I can't afford a house. We bought it together because it was the only way we could afford it. So, no I'm not just gonna move out.😮‍💨

      We never completely control our environment. When you leave your house, the food is there. What you need to do is decide what you will eat and then stick to it. Each time you eat junk food, you want junk food. When you get through 3 months without eating junk, you'll feel differently about it. That will be the beginning of change.

    Drew, Mark may I suggest trying to do specialty arabica coffee. It can often have less caffeine thank your regular cup of joe. It helped us with the caffeine addiction a lot!

    first a suggestion-try decaf coffee. Hear me out, there are some decent brands out there. you get all the pros (hot mug in hand, aroma, flavor) with little to no caffeine! My goal this year is to be more consistent in doing things that improve/level up my life. For example: will eating this piece of cake improve my life? If the answer 8 out of 10 times is no....my diet will get better. Will taking a walk after eating improve my health? If the answer is yes 8 out of 10...my health will be better. I may need to track to help with motivation so once I hit 14 walks, I get a massage!

    Mark you should do a video on meeting women. I know you moved beyond pickup, but it would be nice to know your strategies for focusing on meeting women. How to stack the deck in your favor, etc.
