Experimentally Melting Copper and Aluminum Into An Alloy! | Zesty Jon Smelting

  • Hey Everyone!
    This week I am back with a little experiment video! Today I wanted to mix molten copper and aluminum together right around the 80% by weight copper area, as the phase diagram between the two metals has a lot of different phases in that region! As a result, I wanted to just see what would happen if I mixed and then quenched them together!
    You'll see what unfortunately happened to the ingot towards the end of the video, and I didn't quite quench the ingot at the temp I wanted to, so I'll be retrying this again in the near future!

    Aluminum bronze is notoriously brittle if too much aluminum is added to the mix. I would try closer to 10% aluminum. I bet you will be much happier with the results,

      Thanks for the info! I was planning to try again and create different percentages ranging from 10-40% aluminum to see how they turn out, it sounds like I'll definitely need to try out 10% aluminum!

      Beyond 20% AL. is when it starts to get really brittle. Also copper is more difficult to melt in the winter. Just a gas saving tip!

    Very cool experiment. Ive only done one melt since ive had my own Devil Forge. Want more saftey equipment before i do more!

      Thanks, I hear that! Safety is definitely the top priority, too many unpredictable things can happen when melting. Hopefully you can find some inexpensive gear like a face shield, gloves, and an apron so you can get melting!

      Interesting stuff! They probably use alloys far more precise than this though!

    I just did a silver bar that i believe I put too much tin with and it broke during stamping. Im just gonna add copper and try to balance out the strength
