Playing it at 0.75 is a perfect speed for which this rag is usually played. NOT the 'normal' speed which is slightly faster than what is really normal. This is what is usually is known as the correct speed. Somehow, most player pianos are timed to play it at a slightly faster rate of speed to which Scott Joplin would never want his piece to be played at. I recalled laughing when the speed of this music was increased because that would sound quite comical. Like if Charlie Chaplin has his way to boost up Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag to his iconic way of walking.
Always wanted to have one of these in my home that played as many Joplin rags as possible. Had to settle for music boxes, instead. &:-( Interesting note about Mr. Joplin - during his day he supposedly made some actual piano rolls of his compositions, so that we could hear "him" playing the piano for the future. A bit of controversy has arisen though, in that some musical historians claim now that Joplin actually had other pianists who were more talented than he was at playing the piano cut the rolls instead. Guess we'll never know for sure ..
I've read it's certain he made recordings via piano roll. Alas he wouldn't have been around for the height of player pianos and roll production in the 1920s. So perhaps there is some truth in that. One sad story is that they recorded him on a piano roll playing Maple Leaf Rag. He played the same piece again a few months before his death when the syphilis was taking over. They noted it was unrecognizable compared to the previous recording and horribly played. His mental capacity just wasn't there anymore!
its just the world trying to take a black mans crown away as they have tried to do for every black artist in history as a black person it really makes me mad. there was no one more talented than him at that time he was simply gifted
Great song, love to play this by hand and on my player piano (same QRS roll) but the tempo is too fast. Maple Leaf Rag was meant to be played around 120bpm Marching tempo or "tempo di marcia".
Do you mean carries the piano or the roll? You won't find a player piano on Amazon my friend. Try Craigslist or eBay. As for the rolls, they can be found on eBay, Craigslist, or qrsmusic.com (expensive, but unused rolls).
Wa Gamer . I had a friend growing up 2 Streets Down whose Father had one . His father would get a roll out and play it for us Kids when we came to visit . Yes it was his pride and joy but once he saw that we were fascinated by it he did not mind putting wear on tear on it . That was in the 70s and they are all dead so i doubt it is still around , Sorry no sale .
Well, I knew scrolls had lyrics printed on them, but was not aware Maple Leaf Rag had lyrics. Though I suspect they may have created lyrics for the scroll market. My great aunt had a player piano and I remember gathering around with the family and singing along it!
@@sa3270 i think the lyrics was created because it was always a standard to have them just like with single player games its now standard to have multiplayer put on when it's not needed.
Tabby c I will film this roll being played at a lower tempo on my new player piano in the next two weeks! When I filmed this years ago I just set the tempo according to the roll. Having since listened to Joplin, I now know it needs to be slowed down!
Here it is! On my new player piano and slowed down (but not much). In fact, maybe still too fast. Poor Joplin, always being played fast. Anyways, I hope you still like it. ruclips.net/video/PpWtq58Sf7E/видео.html
Scott Joplin played this recording, dude's literally playing his own music. No, it's not too fast. Joplin did say not to play ragtime too fast, but he sets the benchmark for "too fast". There's several recording out there of him playing Maple Leaf Rag at around 90-100 beats per minute, which appears to be about what this is played at. Yes, the piece is meant to be "Tempo Di Marcia" (~83bpm), but just let me reiterate that this was played by Joplin himself, he decides what is "too fast". Any faster than this and that'd probably be the line.
There's a player piano from 1910 at the Buena Vista, Colorado museum that plays this. If you ever go, ask one of the staff to activate it
TonyTheCat1 very cool, yes I will! Here's the same roll on my latest player piano.

He has done Pineapple Rag on his Behr & Bros. player piano. It sounds a lot better than this one.

Ragtime was dead by the 20s.
@@shahancheong9792indeed. It was the popular art form from 1897-1922. It started to have major decline after Joplin’s death in 1917 though.

Thank you for a really helpful and knowledgeable comment.
best music when a wild west bar fight is happening
This song makes me want to have a jolly good time as I drive to the bar in my brand new automobile and start a bar fight.
wait that's illegal
also it's funny how this comment went from "I'll have a happy time at the bar!" to "I'm going to start a bar fight!"

Paxton's Special ED search for the QRS Roll on eBay. Extremely common roll. Supposedly the most produced piano roll in fact.

Is the tempo on the fast side? Perhaps I'm used to this being played a 1/8th slower. Piano sounds really neat.
Do you have a Black and White rag roll? I play that song all the time on my cabinet gramophone along with this song and it's awesome.
