      You would just have to close the controls near the keys, the pedals, and the roll compartment and have the vacuum box in the basement where you couldn't hear it.

    That's great! I don't quite understand how it works. Do you make the rolls yourself so the piano can play a lot of melodies or only one melody is possible?

    • @matthewb5364
      @matthewb5364 2 года назад +5

      They're made by a couple companies (some are still making rolls!) And can be installed and removed (after being rewound) so you can have a library of rolls! Technically it's a digital medium (1 is a hole for the pneumatic system, 0 is the paper).

    So spooky but beautifully played! Just wondering out of great curiosity and intrigue, how this piano actually works?

    • @PiotrBarcz
      @PiotrBarcz 3 года назад +3

      The whole player system is operated under suction supplied, in this piano, by a vacuum motor. The roll opens holes in the tracker bar that are tubed to pouches which open valves that contract striking bellows with push fingers on the ends.

    How do you turn this piano on because I don't see any switches anywhere that could be the "on" Button?

    • @merimar3
      @merimar3  3 года назад +3

      There is a small switch underneath the keys you can't see in the video. This player originally could only be played manually by pumping the treadles with your feet. It has been retrofitted with a modern electric pump motor to run without pedaling. However you can pedal it manually too.

    • @merimar3
      @merimar3  8 лет назад +1

      Yes. Any player piano can be played as a regular piano. It is only when you are pumping the pedals (or letting an electric motor run the piano) that the keys have resistance.
      So really, player pianos serve a dual purpose. Piano that plays itself and regular piano that can be played by you!

    • @organbuilder272

      Sure - It would not be surprising. Pianos were made to make music, entertain. This stood in someone's living room and came to life at the Saturday night party. People sand and danced while the player made the piano sing. It didn't forget those nights when friends and neighbors got together to have a good time, drank some beer, ate the snack prepared by the hostess. Then it was left alone, silent, uncared for. And one night - there was magic. Yes, there was no roll. That old piano was reliving memories of a time gone by. An Era of love and kindness, friendships and fun. Yes, there was no roll.
