  • Conditioning Polymer Clay is a vital part of the process, and in this video I give you some tips I have learnt over the years on how to speed this up. I have 3 main tips, cut thinner slices, use a thinner setting on your pasta machine, and fold side to middle. To see what I mean, and how to use this to condition really crumbly clay, within a few minutes, just watch the video.
    If you like my work, then please do have a look at my website, www.fionaabel-smith.co.uk/ and follow me on Facebook / fiona.abelsmith and Instagram. / fionaabelsmith.artist .
    I also have a number of Polymer Clay Tutorials to buy, both in my Etsy shop, PolyOriginals - www.etsy.com/uk/shop/PolyOrig... where I have more tutorials in a PDF format, and as a video tutorial here - polyoriginals.thinkific.com/co...
    Thank you for watching.

    I know this is probably an old video but I am SO grateful to see how to condition clay. I have new slabs of translucent clay that is so crumbly I've had great difficulty using it & wondered if it is old, even though I've only just bought it. I'll be using this every time I use my clay so thank you very much for this tutorial. I'm very grateful. Melody M, Sydney Australia

    I am using Mont marte Clay which is new on the market. Their products are usually first grade.i has been extremely hot in Australia may be this is why. Surely as you said placing between a sheet of paper will help to soak all the old coming out through it. I will also try to keep them in the fridge

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  4 года назад

      Ooooooh, I have never used that brand, so that's a new one on me and I have no idea how soft it normally is. But yes, you have been having it very hot over there, so it may be a combination of those two things that have caused this issue. Hopefully the leeching and cooling will help resolve the issue. But certainly don't discard the clay, there are some techniques when having a really soft clay is such an advantage :)

    Thank you!

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  2 года назад

      Don't worry too much about that, as long as you get the clay workable and easy to move it should be fine. At times the mixture may be a little firmer, and added conditioning won't change that. As you get experienced, you learn to be able to feel when the clay is conditioned and not to worry overly. Some of the clays with mica powders or glitters are generally firmer, with more cracking too, even though they can be well conditioned. I hope that helps a little :)

      Thank you so much, I am glad it was helpful 🙂 The pasta machine I use is an Atlas machine, at home I use the 180 (a wider machine) and when travelling or on workshops, I use the 150. I have always used the Atlas machines and I find them very good for Polymer Clay. However, there are other very good makes, such as the Imperia machines, and of course those made specifically for use with Polymer Clay. Ginger Davis Allman, from The Blue Bottle Tree has a number of articles on Pasta Machines - thebluebottletree.com/?s=pasta+machines which may prove helpful in choosing a machine.
      Here is a link to an Atlas machine, (for reference only, as obviously there are many other places both online, and in stores where they can be found), and it is worth searching around till you can find a good deal on one. I hope that is of some help. www.amazon.com/Marcato-8320-Machine-Cutter-Instructions/dp/B0009U5OSO/ref=sr_1_3?crid=BPH5K7P26RQT&keywords=atlas+pasta+machine&qid=1556786279&s=gateway&sprefix=atlas+pasta+machine%2Caps%2C211&sr=8-3

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  3 года назад

      Thank you Jackie. The main 'no's are - not in sun, no where too hot, and canes/colours not touching each other. I use plastic boxes, but check first to make sure the clay will not melt the plastic. Try a little bit on one corner for 24 hours, if there is no reaction, it will be okay. You can leave them on your work surface, but they will of course get dusty. Many people wrap them in deli wrap before storing in a container. There are so many answers to this one, hunt around on Facebook pages to get storage suggestions, as there are lots of good ideas out there. I hope that helps a bit :)

    I’m about to start playing with polymer clay and with the shortage I was able to find a good deal on some fimo professional but was scared to try it being so new to this because it can be hard to condition and I am sooooo happy I saw your video because you made this seem so easy to do compared to what I’ve heard. Thank you for creating this wonderful content and helping us!!!

      I am so glad it was helpful. Yes I had some very hard old Professional I needed to use the other day, but I cut it thin, put it through a thin setting and within a couple of minutes it was back to working condition. The good thing with Professional is that once you have it conditioned it is a really nice clay to work with. Have fun and enjoy your clay experience :)

    Thanks so much for this! Incredibly helpful and concise, will be using this method now as conditioning can become so tedious!

    It’s a lifesaver for me! It is always a big struggle for me to condition old, hard polymerClay. I have tried adding baby oil, clay conditioner whatsoever and it is still pain to work things out. I never thought conditioning clay would be as easy as the way you show us! Thank you so much for sharing this tips with us Fiona! This is a very generous and helpful video!
