Enjoyed the video. Gave me a better idea of what is beyond Cedar Ridge. The formation you called the battleship is O'Neill Butte, named for Buckey O'Neill, whose log cabin is the oldest building at the South Rim, right near the Bright Angel Lodge.
Thanks for sharing! My son and I did that same route a couple years ago in one day! About killed me, but totally worth it! Didn't bother my son at all. This year is his senior year of high schools and he wants to do it again during spring break! I'm currently trying to get in shape to do it. Hoping we get a camp spot this year so we an do it in two days. What kind of camera did you use?
Thanks for your comments - I use an Olympus OMD-EM5 ii for this I - currently have the mark iii, --great camera for traveling! Best of luck on your adventure!
Thank you for this beautiful video. I did the Rim to Rim To Rim adventure in 2018. The grand Canyon is the most beautiful Nature place I have ever been. I have visited beautiful places, including Mt. Whitney and Yosemite, but there is only ONE Grand Canyon. It is a Magical place, it is called One of the Seven Wonders of the World for a reason. Go visit! Don't wait!
Enjoyed the video very much. I'll be making the hike to the Phantom Ranch this October. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together for the rest of us to view.
My wife and I did this route a few years ago when we were in our mid-fifties. We didn't stay at Phantom Ranch, rather we did the full 17 miles in one day. It took us 11 hours and the thermometer at Indian Garden was reading 100 degrees on our way up. The heat made the hike nearly deadly. It was a huge butt kicker to say the least. We hope to do this hike one more time but from the North Rim and spend the night at the Ranch so we can be fresh on our way back out.
I think your plan to spend a night is a good one, its kind of neat to be down there, and yes, you at least get a small break before going back up. Have fun!
we hiked up Bright Angel after a night at Phantom Ranch - was pretty sore from coming down, and could have probably uses another night at the bottom, but we found going up was actually easier
It's the Kolb Studio, where the two Kolb Brothers had a theatre where they showed a movie they made traveling down the river in a wooden boat. It was also where they process film from photos they took of tourists on the Bright Angel Trail. The movie was shown 1915-1976. The building is from about 1902. Gift shop, gallery, and museum today. Their huge carbon-arc projector is still there.
Hello David, It is a nice video with great information. Could you please provide a detailed suggestions for a new hiker and tips. How long did it take for you to reach the top and how difficult was it? Thanks.
We did some 6 yo 8 mile hikes to practice. Get some good fitting hiking boots, and trekking poles helped a lot on the down hill (my wife and I are in our 50s). If you stay at Phantom Ranch, you can forgoe taking tents and camping gear, we had smaller back packs and just took water and snacks. Reserve a meal at the bottom at Phantom Ranch - great food, they have beer too!
Thanks for the video! Have done that hike in and out in one day 4 times, the first in ‘95, the last in 2017. Am planning to do again in 2020 only this time stay at phantom ranch for 2 nights. What was your experience like getting reservations there?...I’ve heard they have to be made 13mos in advance.
Hello Greg, we reserved Phantom Ranch in October and got a February date. We were looking for later in the year, but that was all that was available, I think if you want to pick a date, at least 6 months in advance would be my advice. You never know what the weather will be like, but it was really nice when we did this in February.
It was about 6 hours total - we stopped a bit along the way for breaks. I think the uphill was easier in some respects that the constant downhill along Kaibab
My wife and I did a number of hikes around the Tucson area, to include Mount Lemmon and Mount Wrightson. We also took a seminar that was put on by a local business that explained what to expect and the best trails to use. Best of luck to you - it is a great experience!
Hello Barabar, sorry for the late reply, we trained in Tucson mostly, Mount Lemmon was high elevation, but you really didn't need the elevation training as much as just doing some distance and elevation 'changes' - best of luck
Thanks so much for the great video and memories. I have backpacked to the bottom and camped twice and hiked out that same route but in reverse.
You're most welcome!
Enjoyed the video. Gave me a better idea of what is beyond Cedar Ridge. The formation you called the battleship is O'Neill Butte, named for Buckey O'Neill, whose log cabin is the oldest building at the South Rim, right near the Bright Angel Lodge.
Thanks Fred, great information on O'Neill Butte!

Thank you - the rim to rim sounds like a great time!
Great video!
Thanks so much for sharing!
I love GC., never hiked it though…

Thanks for your comment George, and best to you with the hike!
Nice video- I am thinking of doing this adventure for my 50th B-day.
Its a great place to take pictures, you can't get a bad one, best to you on the hike!

Hi David, did you go back to PR after the hike up or where did you lay your head that night?
we hiked up Bright Angel after a night at Phantom Ranch - was pretty sore from coming down, and could have probably uses another night at the bottom, but we found going up was actually easier
This place looks gorgeous
It was a great hike, glad we did it. Highly recommend at least once if you can!
We did this hike in November of 2019. If I go back, I would not go down the South Kaibab. I would take Bright Angel both ways.
the South Kaibab takes a toll on your legs, I must say
Great video! What is that building at the top of Bright Angel?
most likely the gift shop as far as I know, glad you liked video!

Moving time was about 5 hours, stops for photos, snacks and rests, made it closer to 6:15 (we went up Bright Angel) - - best of luck!
Here is our hike up on the Strava app:www.strava.com/activities/1399582018
Thanks
Awesome video Dave!
Thanks!
Thanks for posting! Any tips for a first timer?

David French Thank you!
David French Do they provide bedding and towels in the dorms?
David French Thank you! Headed down Friday.

David French Thanks David. I see GCNP has gone to a lottery system for PR reservations. secure.grandcanyonlodges.com/phantom-ranch-lottery
So how long did it take you to go up the bright angel trail?

David French awesome! Enjoyed the video!
How did you train and at what elevation?
