    I admire the hikers' courage for hiking in such a timing arrangement (starting from noon and back in the same day in darkness). Based on their speed obviously they are in very good shape and experienced. However for anybody who is not very active and experienced please DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A REFERRAL. Hiking this route in November has two problems: coldness and short day time. Normally even you don't enter Phantom Ranch and take a turn to Bright Angel Trail right after crossing the river on South Kaibab, it takes 11 hours for regular people with average shape in the 35-45 age. That is 3 hours down and 6 hours up, plus picturing and snacking time and enough margin for any unexpected discomfort, like toe friction, you should plan 11 hours. In November, sunrise time is around 7:30AM and by 5:30PM it is dark in the mountain. Adding the dawn light before sunrise, we have 10.5 to 11 hours of light. So you should start before sunrise, like 6:00AM. But that is the coldest time of the day, often below 32F. You need equipments to keep warm and micro spikes in case there is ice. Do not forget headlight. It is OK you start from darkness but definitely need to finish before darkness! Do good time planning and have a good idea of your pace. If you are not feeling good, there is a shortcut named Tonto Trail that you can take to get to Bright Angel from South Kaibab without going all the way to the river. This will guarantee you are out before darkness.

      Thank you for advice!! I'm going to visit Canyon this May. I want to go down and up on Bright Angel Trail. I want to do it because you can live your car near this trail and save some time because you don't need use buses. Another reason is that I want to see the river but I don't think that it will be interesting to go all the trail along the river. Just look at the river, short walking along it and then go back. Could you please advise me how much time I will need? I'm 33 years old and I'm in good shape, could even say that I'm sporty man:)). Is it ok if I start my way at 9 - 10 A.M.?

    This hike is a great experience if limited time and never been there before but if you get the chance to hike rim to rim and back you’ll be overwhelmed by the views coming down north kaibab. Even climbing NK your in for a treat. Climbing B Angel is great but the views aren’t “in your face” . NK it’s in your face both directions. I have plans this September to run the r2r2r again - hopefully it’ll be open by then. Safe hiking all 😀🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

    Great video - agree with you both it is cold in Arizona right now. I was passing through on I-40 through Flagstaff and it was 27 degrees F at night, but when you look up at the night sky you can see the Milky Way. It is amazing to see so many stars. Living around LA you forget how many star the are really in the sky...

    My mom and dad met at the South Kaibab. He worked for the Forest Service and she was head waitress at the Bright Angel Lodge. Went there two years ago but to early, it was closed. I have hiked the trail from South Rim in a day in 1956. Need to return to the Kaibab. Maybe next year. Lots of spirits.

    Beautiful landscapes :-) It's nice that the trail is well used in case somebody ever got hurt & needed help out off the trail. I can't believe the deer are not skittish. I would have had to shoot more pics so the hike would have taken me 4 more hours. LOL Great video.

    Thank you for reminding me of one of the best hikes I have ever done (guess it was in 2000). My travel buddy and I did more or less every park in the West from Death Valley to Jasper. The Grand Canyon hike and the Half Dome hike in Yosemite were the most memorable ones. Greetings from Germany

    Thanks so much for this video. I watched it before a friend and I did this hike in August 2015, but stayed two nights at Phantom Ranch. I think it's important to say that the National Park Service strongly discourages anyone from taking YOUR hike (down and back in one day), especially during May-October. And, I would add that you don't get a lot of chances to explore the bottom of the Grand Canyon, so plan on staying for a couple of days! :-)
    I made an instructional video on my channel, if anyone is interested. Our hike was in the summer, so we did a lot of preparation for heat, but ended up not having much heat at all. There were monsoons while we were there, which made it cooler but unbelievably humid. Like deep South humid!
    We had a lot of trouble on the hike down with puddles on the trail. All the steps were full of water, so we had to choose our footing very carefully to avoid falling and boots full of water. That slowed us down a lot.
    IMHO, the hike DOWN was much harder than the hike up. Hiking down uses muscles that you aren't used to using a lot over a long period of time. The fronts of my thighs were ON FIRE! Hiking up is one giant cardio exercise. I often explain it to people by saying the hike out is like RUNNING ten miles, but you can stop anytime you want. But, as long as you're moving, you have to be RUNNING. Anyone can do it...but, it takes longer if you have to stop a lot. And I had to stop a lot. :-)
    Again, thank you for the video. I enjoyed it BEFORE taking the hike, and enjoyed it again this morning as I was reminiscing a little bit.

    I started this video thinking "27 minutes? I'll watch 3 minutes and be on my way."
    Ended up watching the whole thing. It was interesting, it was genuine and very informative. I'm from Europe and now I think I have a pretty good idea what the Grand Canyon is like and let me tell ya, I had no idea it could get so cold in there! I thought the coldest it could get was like 30ºC or something. -7ºC?? Holy cow!

      MJ San I went to the Grand Canyon in early December 20 years ago. We pulled up to the El Tovar at nightfall and scooted over to the rim. There had been a snow storm a few days earlier. I was wearing jeans and a jacket. It was so incredibly to the bone COLD I ran back to the hotel and put on silk long johns under my jeans and didn't ever take them off. On the top/rim area: bitter cold. However, hike a mile or two down any of the trails and it immediately warms up-crampons off your shoes and jackets off. Cold on top/rim area, much warmer as you go down into the Canyon.

    • @migueljalo9731
      @migueljalo9731 9 лет назад

      elaine31347 what's with the crazy thermal amplitude? Probably due to the height differential, right?

    • @elaine31347
      @elaine31347 9 лет назад

      MJ San I think the canyon may be like a giant "bowl" where the cold air on top doesn't mix well down to the bottom? I really don't know, but there is a huge difference in temperatures. We never hiked that far into the canyon. I was well aware of the journey back "up" and up is always harder than down.

    • @GuyHufstetler
      @GuyHufstetler 8 лет назад +1

      +Miguel Jaló I think it's the same idea that it's colder on top of a mountain, so that's why there's snow up there in the summer. The rim is 7200 feet above sea level, which is similar to many mountains. You actually drive a good ways uphill to get to the rim.
      If you google it, you find that it has to do with the density of the air. The less dense air cannot hold as much heat energy.

    I have hiked into the Grand Canyon twice - in 1978 and again in 1995, both hikes on the Bright Angel Trail. In fact, my camera failed on the first hike, therefore necessitating a second hike when the right opportunity for it arose, taking with me a better camera. Each hike took two days, spending the night at Phantom Ranch at both occasions.
    But I now have one regret, and that is not experiencing the views of and from South Kaibab Trail. So I must admit to you, I was disappointed for the lack of views, especially from Oo-Ah Point, and maybe a good shot of O'Neal's Butte with some commentary on it. Instead, all there was on-face talking and a speeded-up footsteps on the trail, although your filming of the tunnel was good.

    Hi! Thank you for sharing this video. Some friends and I are planning on going down there in a couple weeks. I hike a lot because I live up in Red Rock National Park, but some of my friends don't go as often. I would put our entire group at a beginner-moderate level. That being said, would you advise since we are planning on starting at South Kaibab to go back up Bright Angel? It wasn't my plan at first but I was wondering if you think it's a better plan than going back up South Kaibab. We are going to start the hike around 5:30/6:00 am. Also, is there a major time difference if we were to go onto the Bright Angel trail instead of going back on the South Kaibab? Thank you!

      DoYouEven NatureBro yeah I did. I would start early if you can just in case you run into any problems. We had one person who could barely make it but she was really unfit so that was why it was hard for us. Just make sure if you are in group everyone is actually physically AND mentally fit for it. Most of us are average fit and we were fine but that one person just made it 1000% more difficult than it should have been. Water and electrolytes are really important and flashlights in case you're still there in the dark. The trail is really well maintained and easy to walk on; you can't lose it. It was amazing and beautiful and I would definitely do it again!

    Hiking down the South Kaibab is my favorite trail in the tourist corridor. Just did a six day backpack starting at the Hermit Creek trail head and coming out the Bright Angel. Took over six hundred pictures most of which were junk, mostly because I don't have an eye, but also because of the harsh shadows inside of the canyon. What techniques do you use when faced with bright brights and dark shadows? Pics on Facebook - facebook.com/phil.hurst.96/media_set?set=a.10203206038251838.1073741882.1234771506&type=3

      to be fair the bus from BA lodge to the visitors center takes forever... ugh... and then you have to take another fucking bus to get to the south kaibab trail... I did this exact hike and I just simply took the bus from the visitors center to SK trail in the morning... which is a quick ride... and then after my hike I took the bus from BA lodge to the visitor's center... this way you are taking the bus in the dark instead of wasting daylight..

      No, you cannot park anywhere near the south Kaibab trail... closest parking would be the (huge) visitor's center... you can use the RIm trail to hike to the Kaibab trailhead... I think that is 2 miles of flat hiking
