i went through a bunch of "How to Play Mother" videos and none of them explained the rythm pattern in any useful way until I found this one. Thank you Shane.
My main man!! You always know how to articulate the lessons in a way that simplifies its structure by breaking up the strumming patterns ,chord changes, timing etc. Your are very clear and organized in what you want to convey to us ,so thanks I really appreciate you
Best explanation ever. First I thought this song might be easy, tried by myself, went almost crazy by trying to find the right rhythm pattern… Now I saw your video and finally it became easy.
Amazing tutorial! It's been quite a saga for me to finally find someone who teaches the rythm patterns correctly and so straightforward. Thank you so much! ❤
I could never get that pattern down...now that I've seen your lesson, how you divide the number of beats in accordance with the accenting, I actually stand a chance...you are a great teacher, more power to you
I have looked at all the other ways to play this song, and you are absolutely the best at explaining this song, thank you sooo much now I can add this song in my collection of playing pink Floyd
dude. agreed. this is the most logical approach ive seen. i like how you say dont fixate on each nuanced riff. because the beats is the only thing that matters on this particular song. i am terrible at it but gonna practice your way
Great tutorial Shane. I've been a Floyd fan for as long as I can remember and love this song. l decided to teach myself acoustic guitar 18 months ago, and thanks to your excellent lesson I have added this classic to my slowly expanding kitbag. Cheers from Oz.
awesome lesson! pink floyd was my second obsession (stones, then floyd, then zeppelin) the solo from this song is heart-wrenching. just about half a minute, but it was the first electric solo i learned note for note, tone, feel, and all. I HAD to learn it. I felt 30 seconds of raw emotion that echoed in my head and begged to be played was worth the effort. my weakness is rhythm playing. my strum pattern is predictable. thanks for posting. must say, although I find myself searching out rare live zeppelin often, floyd have the most moving solos...Time, Mother, the opening to Coming Back to Life, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Have A Cigar (that bit at the very end where it whooshes down to sound like its coming from a small radio gets me every time...and I hate when radio stations cut it)
You've just earned new subscriber. I always wanted to learn this song, but this is only video I've found where the strumming pattern is explained. And it's explained really well, so thank you for that!
Hey man great video. Just popped up for me so I'm late to the game but Pink Floyd is by far my favorite band of all time. Great easy to follow tutorial even for me lol. Thank you🤘🤘
Excellent tutorial on what is indeed a difficult pattern albeit fairly simple chord progression. Question- I’ve seen Roger play this a few times and he adds the G (low E string 3rd fret) to the C chord and gives it a fuller sound.. Thoughts? Thanks again for an excellent lesson on this wonderful PF song.
Jeff Goldblum gonna make all of your nightmares come true Jeff Goldblum gonna put all of his fears into you Jeff Goldblum gonna keep you right here under his wing He won't let you fly but he might let you sing Jeff Goldblum gonna keep baby cosy and warm
Thanks Wayne - head to guitaratwork.ca You can freely download the sheets for that song and many others. Newer videos and sheets can be found at patreon.com/guitaratwork Cheers, Shane
Just wait til you start adding the hammer on in there. Getting those to sound right takes some serious focus. Especially when waters is singing the second part, "Mother should I run for president"...
Thank you for all this great work! Just one thing, why should the second measure in the verse be 3/8? It fits well and grooves in 4/4 when the rhythm section comes in.
As a drummer I would count it as 4/4 through the verse all except for the first two times "mother do ya think" which are the 5/8 as you mentioned. And then 1 measure of 6/8 for "..ah mother should I build a - wall.. kind of foreshadows the chorus which I count 6/8 starting at "cry" and with one longer 6/9 for ending of measure with "cozy and warm" = 7 8 9. A different approach.. it locks in with the back beat.
@@GuitarAtWork Thank you for posting, I appreciate the work. If I'm looking something like this up it's because I'm geeking out on this type of detail, wondering what other people think..
Dude, you keep referring to tablature sheets that you've written. Where do I find them? I just found you when I was trying to find a better strumming pattern and chord fingering for Wheat Kings and I like your teaching style. Quick and to the point, but explaining everything to a T. Do you have a website. Can you not advertise it on RUclips?
Hi Abby, Thanks for your feedback - much appreciated! I haven't figured out a good way to add the sheets/notation to RUclips. Any suggestions are welcome. I do have website and you can contact me directly from there - happy to email a PDF of the sheets. Head to www.shanesimpson.com Best to you! Shane

Thanks! In the main rhythm after the 5 straight beats initially on the g, you refer to the next as r 3-5. I understood from other sources that the time sig. Is 5/8. Is that the same thing? I still don't quite understand the time sig. 5/8, but what you have explained as 3-5 makes sense....trying to.know if indeed you are saying the same thing in a different way
Hi John - a good question - the 3 and the 5 overtop of the chords at the end of the first line on the page refer to each chord getting 3 beats and then another 5 beats. While this obviously is a total of 8 beats, it helps to show the accent patterns. Accent the first beat of each grouping of 3 and 5. Hope that makes sense! Shane
It's hard to see when you keep a constant in your strumming to hold the rhythm. I struggle so bad with strum patterns too. Gotta listen for the low or high notes coming first with each strum. Sounds good in theory but the skill eludes me still haha

Thank you. This is the best explanation of the rhythm patterns for Mother by far.

Most songs sound unique because the timing, but most don't actually play it right nor explain it well. Thanks so much for this!!
Absolutely the best tutorial on this song.

Hi Shane - your method of instruction is great ... I love it and I'm hooked. I have a request ... Pigs on the Wing by Pink Floyd.
Brill vid and brill explanation.
Jeff Goldblum gonna make all of your nightmares come true
Jeff Goldblum gonna put all of his fears into you
Jeff Goldblum gonna keep you right here under his wing
He won't let you fly but he might let you sing
Jeff Goldblum gonna keep baby cosy and warm
Why Jeff Goldblum? I don't get it.......
Shane
Good work man.....thank you. Nice Taylor by the way
Thank you Greig - always appreciated! I really like that Taylor

Great stuff. Most lessons on RUclips completely ignore the timing aspects in this song
Thanks Andy - much appreciated. Happy to have you here with us!

Hi Mike - thanks for that - much appreciated. This one is all about the accent patterns - it could certainly be counted many ways. Cheers!

Hi John - the time signature is not actually 5/8 - the song jumps all over the place - hope you can make sense of it. Happy to help!
Shane
Seems like you skipped the fifth beat on G before the 5-3 switch to C.... 5:13 into the video.
Hmmm - maybe I did....just maybe. Cheers, Shane
Not explained well enough, only joking twas great.
Ha! Thanks Eamonn - have fun with it! Shane
Part of the joy of figuring out a song is playing it how it sounds good to you. You don’t have to match it note for note,or beat for beat
FORGET IT. ITS EVEN TOO GET THE GUITAR AND THROW IT ACCROSSTHE PARKING LOT
DIDN'T HE SAY DOWN STUMES AND THAN UP DOWN STRUMS BUT CAN'T EVEN TELL WHAT THE HELL HIS STRUMMING IS IT UP OR DOWN ..ANNYOING
It's hard to see when you keep a constant in your strumming to hold the rhythm. I struggle so bad with strum patterns too. Gotta listen for the low or high notes coming first with each strum. Sounds good in theory but the skill eludes me still haha

For sure Miguel - keep at it - takes some getting used to!
Shane
I'm not a big fan of strumming / campfire lessons
Yet you’re here and just had to let us know....
@@Jorel032777 Yeah because the Title clearly says "Strumming Version" right? Crawl back under your rock.
