This was based off a true story. The veteran who Anthony was based off of only served 5 years in prison.

I think this movie and First Blood did an incredible job showing the difficulties of Vietnam vets returning home
There was a disproportionate amount of blacks on the front lines in Vietnam. The Vietnamese knew what blacks experienced in America and dropped pamphlets to them telling them to go home, it's not their fight.

I will not berate you for being young but I would suggest you do some research on the Vietnam War and the social and cultural climate of the late 60's and early 70's. It would add A LOT of context to the movie and the actions and portrayals of the characters. Without this type of context, you really can't understand the levels of complexity playing out in the story.

This is actually my favorite movie. Anthony was a young kid, trying to find his way throughout society. He was completely wrong for what he did but Juanita didn’t make it any better. Keep uploading the content 🔥
Yeah, Juanita kept putting too much pressure on Anthony. Her sister Delilah would have been understanding since what she became, plus she's finner than Juanita.
I remember the whole family seeing this in the theater. We have quite a few marine vets in my fam and a few from Nam

They didn't just hand out gifts to random kids. Consider the times, we were more communal in those days. Everyone in your community knew you directly, or indirectly, there was some type of relationship. If you came up, you felt compelled to help those around you as well.

Great Underrated Powerful Movie
I did not expect much from Dead Presidents when i saw it on my video shop. The cover doesn't look great and i haven't heard of this film. I enjoyed Menace to society, Boyz N the hood and juice. But After these releases there hasn't been any great Black (Hood) Crime movies. There have been so many disgraceful movies that star some rapper used to promote the movies. I gave Dead Presidents a chance, and I'm glad i did. This was a Masterpiece, directed by Hughes Brothers after Hit movie Menace 2 Society. The Hughes Brothers impress once again. Starring highly underrated actor Larenz tate in a powerful, Superb performance. Alongside Chris Tucker in a supporting role. This is a Great Action movie, with some serious situations.
Black history note: the hand shake (The Dap) that black men are doing today started in the Vietnam War. I’m glad that this movie is showing the Dap

1973 in the South Bronx is where my older sister was born. It’s funny even seeing it depicted in this movie. I didn’t see it to remember it until the early 80’s.

Nice reaction!!! This movie was actually directed by the Hughes Brothers. The same filmmakers who made Menace II Society( this is why you see some of the same actors). Due to the critical and financial success of Menace, the brothers were given a bigger budget to make this film. Despite the bigger budget, for me the movie was too ambitious of trying to pull-off what they were trying to achieve. Personally I thought the war scenes looked cheap and lacked visual scope. At times I believed, they used most of their $10 million to secure Martin Sheen as the judge in the final scene.
