Why would the ROC military fight for Taiwan "independence"?! Both ROC and PRC constitutions are based on one China policy, except both claim to be the only legit government. The PLA would not initiate an invasion if the ruling party in ROC does not attempt to abandon the current ROC constitution. Proof? Sure, during the KMT regime when Ma was the president, there was peace between the ROC and PRC due to a tacit understanding that KMT was not seeking Taiwan "independence". Now the DPP ruling party is aggressively taking steps to essentially change the status quo of ROC constitution's one China principle. Most of westerners either just don't understand the reasons for peaceful time during KMT regime (vs DPP the current ruling party), or choose to ignore the facts. Same goes to the pro-independence politicians and supporters reside in Taiwan, ROC.

Why would China have an issue with Taiwan moving away from it's claim as "the real China" and instead solidifying itself as a unique entity if their goal wasn't to control it like they have clearly been stating and preparing to do for years.
