I was just "playing" with some fatwood yesterday that I had in my garage. You are soooo right when talking about using it. You can feather it, light it with a fired source, but it would seem the most enjoyable easiest way is simply scrapping it down into a pile, spark it, and watch it burn. I will have to try that stand up and fill with scrappings when everything is wet. It looks like a great way to get wet tinder dried out enough to burn and ignite the twigs etc. thanks for another great video demonstration
I like that you demonstrated this. Interesting technique of making small holes in the log to stick upright pieces. Still have a fireban in effect here, hoping it will lift soon enough. Have a great week and God bless.
Oh happy day to you my dear friend. There is nothing better than some good old fatwood bacon. Thank you for sharing another outstanding video. Looking forward to seeing your next video stay safe and burn on
I bought my victorinox when I wasn't interested in bushcraft fire starting. So I chose to have S14 model. It has a nice locking blade, scissors and everything but a SAW. It was the biggest mistake of my life so far. Maybe I can just grind backs of my other folding knives, benchmade, spyderco, fallkniven etc. Oh, recently I bought Speedy Sharp carbide sharpener to use as a striker and it gives me sparks like hellfire. It seems it is better than anything else. You may already know it but I just wanted to comment. So according to your video, it seems scraping gives you good dry tinders when it's raining. I will remember this. As always, thank you so much for the lesson, sir.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Yes, it looks beautiful and the saw can be used for tinders. A lot better than those SAKs without a saw. Good choice. Thank you for your video and comments.
I don’t usually have any problems when I just shave off wide paper thin slices, even when everything is wet. The dust is a good option to have when or if you need it though without a doubt.
Mr. West ➡, have you found shavings of fatwood be fairly reliable as a fire starter, even when being actively rained upon, like in your video?🤔🤔 Thank you for posting this information as I am new to Buschcraft!😁
How is it possible that I can’t get the fatwood scrapings to catch a spark? I’m throwing good sparks and fine scrapings from the back of my knife… any help?
Does fatwood explode during bushfires mate. I imagine it burns hot and fierce, but being so flammable, it must really flare up in a hurry. Thanks for the vid, really informative. Steven.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl The power of a forest fire is hard to comprehend. A hot fire can create a mini cyclone that can pull an entire tree out of the ground. Foresters in Northern Ontario were seeing odd circular patches in the ground on air photos - turns out it was trees and/or stumps that had been ripped from the ground by fire.
Do you harvest your own fat wood? If so, the harvesting process might make a good video. Also, could you make a fire starter that would start in moist or damp conditions, and burn for 15 minutes? That would be interesting, and useful Finally, I can highly recommend the Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Car Wash, followed by the Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Spray Coating. Very easy to apply, and phenomenal long lasting protection, and water beading. I purchased at Advance Auto, but available on Amazon, and at Turtle Wax. I just picked up the Stanley 10-049! I was also happy to see you using the saw from the SAK. I have an ALOX Farmer model that I’m very fond of.
Great knives.
Very nice video. I learn something every time I watch you Dave.

excellent demo. specially the second one....thanks for the info
In Florida we always called it lighter knot
In the rain. Amazing.. very useful . Thank you Mr. David.
13:08 great reference David. 😆
The waiter takes a grater, a wedge of parmesan cheese, and starts a shower of cheese over your salad or pasta... "Say when". LOL!
Nice to see you using a Swiss Army knife.
I break it out from time to time.
Fatwood in coffee is one thing. On pasta? Might be a bit "chewy". 😎
Popcorn on a rainy day, go hand in hand.
Thanks for posting.
LOL! A true "watcher"... in there watching to the end. Thank you!
that sure is purdy fatwood ! maybe the first documented use of a baton with a 10-049 !
The right tool for the right job. LOL.
The small fatwood pieces would make cool birthday cake candles.
LOL!

To keep fatwood sticks fresh dip them in melted wax....it will seal the rosin inside.

Damp fatwood and dried out fatwood will ignite, but they're a little more difficult to ignite than dry and fresh.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl I can’t understand what I’m doing wrong…
See my ferro rod playlist.
Can fat wood be ignited with a steel and flint? I'm trying to figure all this stuff out and sending you a lot of comments.

Hey David how many Mora Companions do you have?
3 Stainless, an orange handled one, blue, and green.

I've seen whole Pine Trees sort of explode into flames in forest fires.

Any thoughts on craftsman’s copycat version of the Stanley 10-499?
What's the model number?
I can’t find any numbers on the knife but here is. This ones worn out but a google image search will show how similar the two are
Well never mind? You can’t post pics in comments. Lol
At 1.33min that little waffler looks like some nice dry aged ny sirloin. So that's a perfect level of goodness haha
Thank you
Welcome!

It sure rains alot where you live
I like fat wood but man does it leave a sticky residue on your knife
LOL! I just now took a cotton ball and WD40 and wiped off the residue that was stuck on the spine of the Mora that I used in this video.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl sweet I normally use lighter fluid never tried wd I bet that would work good!!
