I'm completely out of Ashed Tinder, low on Fatwood Sticks, and could always use some more Char Cloth. Sounds like a good time to show you how I make these excellent fire starters. Any tinder that you saturate with ashes will make that tinder into a great coal extender. It can be used the same way to catch sparks easily, stays lit/smoldering all by itself without aeration, and conversely can be aerated into an intense ember to ignite tinder. I never used fatwood sticks at all until about a year ago... don't know why. I happily keep them in stock all the time now. They're great about starting difficult wet tinders for fire. Who ever really has enough char cloth? Although I have a peanut can full, I could always use more. LOL! Really though, I already have denim and terry cloth so, in the interest of variety, I'll be adding some t-shirt char cloth to the mix. I spent a week in the Sierra Nevada mountains last week and never used a match or lighter. Only the things you have taught me., Had a fire every night no problem..Thanks Mr. David...I impressed a couple of teenagers too. I bet they will be subscribing to your channel soon. :)
I've known for quite a while about Fatwood & Char-Choth, that it's great stuff for building a fire. However, this is the first time I've ever been introduced to Ash-Cloth!! So very impressive!! I've learned something brand new. Goes to show, a person isn't too old to come across different fire building techniques & bushcraft. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Hi David! I have watched the majority of your videos. I find them so relaxing and inspirational. Fire is mesmerizing to me... Thanks for sharing your knowledge and time for all to see and learn from!
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Thanks for the reply David. I have camped and lived in RV communities half of my life and enjoyed the fire and friends around it. At the age of 74 I can still master the fire and am now learning new tricks and techniques from you. Hope you will enjoy your crafts for years to come!
Excellent video David! I started a fire yesterday using a magnifying glass and charcloth made 3 years ago. Lit like a champ!!! AND of course I learned how to make charcloth from you!!!🙂 I made a bow drill, spindle, fire board and hand block from your videos as well! No luck getting a fire but got smoke before I pooped out! Lol! Can't wait to try again! Thanks for ALL the knowledge you're sending our way!!!🙂👍👍👍
VERY good instruction video !! You are fortunate to have such a great source of fat wood ! For once , I learned something new ( to Me ) . I never would have thought about the aluminum bottle ( w/ solar ignition on bottom ) or , ash cloth . I like that better than char cloth !
I would like to add to the topic of char cloth if you have 100% cotton absolutely use that because its creates a premium product. But even 70% will work in a pinch. It will be more stiff and crumbly making it a bit harder to use, and will leave residue on your char tin but it will light from a fero rod.
Very informative video. Thanks David. Are those cicadas chirping in the background? I've heard them when I visited NC, but we don't have them in the PNW (Oregon).
What is your all time favorite way to make fire? mine is flint and steel and making char cloth. very satisfying to me anyway, Thanks for what you do, I always learn something watching you. Stay safe my friend, good to see you again,
just giving you the business im to old to go dumpster diving im a hobbyist to i try your methods just to learn new things!lots of fun learning new things !
Thanks for your good training video, I had a question, how did the fabric catch fire in about 4 minutes? The next question is how can I prepare or make 18-minute mesh fabrics for ignition? Thanks
Kind of a new be here what is the best wood to make the fat wood sticks, I heard you mention it was root wood. Cedar, pine, fir. I know my folks used cedar as kindling
Hi David. Just found your videos and I am really enjoying them. Thank you for taking the time to put them out there for folks to benefit. Quick question, it looks like you have a morakniv companion knife. If so, did you grind/file the spine in order to be able to use it with a ferro rod? Do you happen to have a video about that? Thanks!

Lovely to watch I never get tired of starting fires. Or watching you do it. And since finding you I have a new hobby. Will be making your hobo stove. But could I ask? Never seen anyone else blocking vent holes when flame extinguishers. Why did you do that? Thanks 🔥
Hey David, I had a thought. Have you ever tried using ash with your bow drill? Dump some on the board divot, maybe? I'm not anywhere I can try it right now, myself.
Hey David, what if you melted a block of canning wax and stirred in a bunch of ashes, then dip all of your strips in and roll them up? Would that be cheating? That stuff would explode I bet. LOL

I think that's the normal human reaction that most people haven't recognized about themselves. Everybody stares into a campfire mesmerized.

It's ok to cheat for you're first few bow drill embers. Spray WD-40 or other lube on your spindle tip and fire board's divot.
Woah! Better spray the bearing block's divot instead of the fire board's divot! LOL!
Never heard of Asher cloth....ill give it a try. Thanks man

Well Done my Friend Thank You
Just getting in to it making char wood as we speak . What ar the Benafits of fat wood
See my fatwood playlist.
Lovely to watch I never get tired of starting fires. Or watching you do it.
And since finding you I have a new hobby.
Will be making your hobo stove.
But could I ask? Never seen anyone else blocking vent holes when flame extinguishers. Why did you do that?
Thanks 🔥
I like big vent holes. They can let oxygen in during the cooling process and cause the charcloth to burn up. Doesn't happen with smaller vent holes.
David West do bigger holes in your opinion make better char cloth or does the bigger hole just accelerate the process
Thank you
Yes, better. Please visit my char cloth playlist.
Thanks mr west 👍
Its Father’s Day today in the UK hoping to get a mora off the children have a good day 🔥
Hey David, I had a thought. Have you ever tried using ash with your bow drill? Dump some on the board divot, maybe? I'm not anywhere I can try it right now, myself.
Doesn't work, ashed are just quickly deposited into the dust pile.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Oh well, thanks for the info.
I use a Condor machete to baton/split wood.
Nice!
what size of corona saw do you use?
10”
Monkey just learned a new trick..., a few actually.
Monkey see monkey do. That's how I learn too.
David, you should increase the gain on your microphone or use a lapel microphone. Can't hear what you are saying at a normal speaker level.
Hey David, what if you melted a block of canning wax and stirred in a bunch of ashes, then dip all of your strips in and roll them up? Would that be cheating? That stuff would explode I bet. LOL
Try it.
Surely one of these methods can set fire to the globalist agenda, haha. I love the fatwood stick bundle! Great idea 🌲🌲🌲
I tried making ash cloth out of toilet paper. It worked! Burned a little fast though.
I've used paper towel. Any tinder that you ash will work.
I take a firelighter 😂😂😂
