Use a Bow drill normally used in fire starting with a tip as wide and curved as you want the bowl of the spoon to be if you don't have a spoon knife. Stones from a stream or river are good for sanding if you don't have modern sand paper. sealing it with beeswax can shield you from resinous flavors of the wood.
it does my heart good to see a young man like your self filling his time with useful memorable activities like this. great job and thank you for sharing the knowledge. I will be working on this with my sons. Thank you and God bless my friend.
+Thromper1984 With respects, it's just as easy, requiring a different technique yes. I think people forget there's ALWAYS a level of sanding involved for final finish work. I've sat around many rendezvous fires and made spoons for people. It's just that simple... a spoon. Doesn't require a shop full of tools or special blades. If one is nervous about using your blade, burn out the bowl area of the spoon and finish from there.
Wow, those spoons looked like they were machined they were so well made. I have to try this. How would you recommend seasoning the spoon to keep bacteria from setting in. I'm going straight to looking at tools now. Awesome video, thanks for posting.
I use a deep gouge and red and incense cedar, which is abundant where I hike. If not in a hurry, I work little faces into them. One whittler to another: damn those Chinese factories. Let's make true art. Thanks for sharing
Happy to watch your videos. You have a great talent to transmit your knowledge to the public. When I was younger (40 years ago) I lived in a village of shepherds closed to the Alps and we used to carve wood to build up everyday life tools but we used srones to file the excess of wood. I can say that you did a really a good job.
Thanks for that awesome vid. I'm gonna order a a spoon knife off Amazon! This would be a perfect pass time during the winter. Gonna make a spoon for each one of my little girls. Thanks again!
Very nice!! I'll make a couple . They will make for nice gifts plus light weight for all packing and outdoor adventures. Excellent craftsmanship! I think I'll soak them in some natural oil for preserving and keep . Perfect and keep the videos coming! Peace my friend to you and your family .
I call bullshit on you using a special tool, instead place a glowing ember where you want the spoon to be hollowed and blow on it until the spoon head center is an ember too, let the hot coal do the work to hollow the space by blowing on it and smooth it out with a small stone when it is the desired depth, all "bushcraft" should be able to be accomplished with a knife, fire and elements of your surrounding environment. -Green Mountain Boys
GREAT video - so helpful!!! I'm researching right now how to begin with wood carving and want to make a spoon for my first project and your video has been the best I've found so far - thank you!
Been watching a few spoon carving videos throughout the day because I hope to get a hook knife for christmas and I actually plan on making a large spoon for another Swedish youtuber that does video game content (not poopdiepie he bothers me) and I plan on dressing it up a bit so he can feel manlier in the kitchen :P This video so far has been the best instructional I have found.
Great video. The "always from the top to bottom" is not always necessarily true though if you have good stop cuts made with a saw at the top of the spoon. Helps with the splintering. Thanks for posting this.
Wow hand carving a spoon is something I would never of thought of on my own. I was watching my own video about cnc machine carving a redwood sign. What you do takes a lot more skill. As my way to return the favor I have added this video to my website list of favorite wood carving links. I subscribed to your channel because I like your work and want to see more of your videos. Thank you for sharing your skill with us.
Pretty nice! Last month I met a guy on a little island of Brazil doing the same but carving with pieces of glass! cause he didn't had money to buy tools... was interesting. Nice job! Cheers
you are perfect! :D I am from Slovakia and I' m interested in scouting, bushcraft, survival skills and all these things :) thanks for motivation to do my own spoon ;)
After watching your video, I decided to try this. I don't know what kind of wood I used, but the curved knife seem to cut easily. (I am no expert wood carver. My spoon reflects my level of knowledge. LOL! I did enjoy making it!) Thanks for making this video.
A useful skill; thank you for sharing. I have a thought - Would it be more useful as a spoon if the bowl were cranked up at an angle with respect to the handle? That way, you can dip the spoon in your pot and take the food without it spilling off the end of the bowl. You started with a thick piece of wood, and this would allow this modification.
It's a website where people can sell their handmade crafts. Me and my boyfriend really enjoyed your video and were really impressed by your skills. I know for a fact that people would buy your wares. They are incredible.
That was fun to watch. I'll have to try my hand at that as I haven't done it in a while and mine never turned out as nice as these two examples did. Thanks.
excellent tutorial. your right on with the patience. I personally leave a very fine tooled finish on my spoons I find that it will retain that finish where as with sandpaper you have to resand every now and then for it to stay smooth.
LOL you got covered in snow. Your spoon turned out perfect man. ill have to show you me spoon sometime, not as good as yours, but i did not have a spoon knife to use. great stuff.
That's interesting, I've never seen a "spoon knife" tool before. I've always seen people carve wood with "chisels". This tool looks a little more laborious to use than a chisel, especially when you can use a hammer with a chisel, but it seems to have more uses. Thank you for sharing.
You have a great new year also. I am always looking for ideas to teach kids. I work with a large group and we do all kinds of Outdoor camping and survival things. I am going to do your cooking an egg in a potato in an upcoming times. Thanks again Rob
This was a great video I've always wanted to know how you would crave a depression into wood to make a spoon, now I just need a spoon knife. Keep up the good work! I don't know why, but I started laughing uncontrollably when I realized the music being played during the slide show of the spoons was a techno version of "she'll be comin' around the mountain"
if you treat the wood of the spoons with lemon juice and olive oil you can protect it from bacteria growth and keep it food safe.
Nice.
Maybe
Or just use mineral oil
Thank you guys for 200,000 views on this video.
you deserve after all that time you put in this video :)
yaadang Thank you my friend.
Sweg epic I sub
TurtleDude 48 Thank you.

Blazing Sloth hahah
it does my heart good to see a young man like your self filling his time with useful memorable activities like this. great job and thank you for sharing the knowledge. I will be working on this with my sons. Thank you and God bless my friend.
Thank you. I am glad you liked it, i agree.
Thank you my friend. I am from Sweden and were in Sweden in this video.
I think that was the best outro music anyone has ever picked. I danced through the whole thing.
That bass line tho. That Victor Wooten? 😆
Now we need to know how to make a spoon using just a straight knife.. Many of us don't have the scoop knife..
+Mrhycannon Burn it out with coal.
NorthSurvival
Why didn't I think of that.. Thanx..
+Mrhycannon
Or carve it with your knife... Not rocket science.
+Ben A. A straight knife would make the bowl a lot more crude, it could be done, but 10x more time, work and probably more sanding.
+Thromper1984

Jag med!

You've a wonderful approach to sharing your passion with others. There is something quite special about hand-made wooden spoons. Thanks.
Thank you.
Thank you my friend. This was not any form of survival video, but a bushcraft video, so you bring the tools with you.
Wow, those spoons looked like they were machined they were so well made. I have to try this. How would you recommend seasoning the spoon to keep bacteria from setting in. I'm going straight to looking at tools now. Awesome video, thanks for posting.
Thank you. Rub them with some olivoil.
After watchin this again I ordered a mora hook knife and a classic #1 to give it a go. Really inspiring
fireballmalone1 Thank you.
fireballmalone1 maybe because they are machined...
I use a deep gouge and red and incense cedar, which is abundant where I hike. If not in a hurry, I work little faces into them. One whittler to another: damn those Chinese factories. Let's make true art. Thanks for sharing
Thank you.
Holy moley best one I've ever seen !!!
Thank you.

Amazing! Do you have to treat it with vegetable oil or something?
+Liz Burgess Thanks, yes that will be good.
Great video! I am planning on carving a soup spoon for my wife's birthday gift. Thanks north survival from Pennsylvania USA
Great job! I am a girl and I am fascinated in bushcraft. I love camping and everything outdoors! Good video thank you

That looks proffessional
Correct me if i spelt it wrong
Thanks a lot.
Bro, that music! Lol 😂
Haha, hope you liked it.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHY WATCHING A GUY CARVE A SPOON IS SO INTERESTING.
Hi guys, I just uploaded a new awesome video: ruclips.net/video/C2gMwrMl1SQ/видео.html
Thanks for that awesome vid. I'm gonna order a a spoon knife off Amazon! This would be a perfect pass time during the winter. Gonna make a spoon for each one of my little girls.
Thanks again!
I love this music
Good, thanks.
he didnt praise the sun god first
Haha.
"They say he carved it himself from a bigger spoon"
Haha.
I could watch you carve a spoon for hours. Somehow it's very satisfying to watch
+WatchMehDuThangs Thank you.

I liked it but the spoon photoshoot was lame xD
ahahahhaaha yeah
+Parker “TheReveanantTiger” Campellone i liked the photoshoot lol
Very nice!! I'll make a couple . They will make for nice gifts plus light weight for all packing and outdoor adventures. Excellent craftsmanship! I think I'll soak them in some natural oil for preserving and keep . Perfect and keep the videos coming! Peace my friend to you and your family .
Thank you my friend.
Thank you for showing me the way of carving with usage of simple tools :)
Hmmm, interesting
Sure, you can do that if you want. But i think this is a more "fun" way for people to carv a spoon. Thank you.
sweeeeet
sounds cools, but it's not carving
I always wanted to be able to crave a spoon. The video made it easier for me to understand how to crave one. Thanks
Thank you my friend. I am glad you liked it.

Thank you for a very informative video. The spoons turned out amazing!
Thank you very much my friend. If you are new to carving i would recommend the 164. It is easy to use.
Beautiful spoons. Just like nature coming alive!
This was awesome ... I have a new appreciation for the two wooden spoons that hung in my Grandmother's kitchen :-)
I might even attempt this myself!
+theblissfullone Thanks a lot. Try it, it´s much fun.
Great video. The "always from the top to bottom" is not always necessarily true though if you have good stop cuts made with a saw at the top of the spoon. Helps with the splintering. Thanks for posting this.
your core score goes way up for doing this in the snow! awesome video!
+tybo Thanks.
Beautiful work! Thank you! You sound like my Swedish grandmother. I was born in U.S.
Fantastic. Thanks for sharing your talent and giving me good run down on how to get this started. Thanks again.

Nice job! Cheers
More than 2 minutes of spoons with music...
Yes, but it was some nice spoons, and they deserve 2 minutes of fame.
These skills are okey to use, this is bushcraft, it is the survival skills that you never want to use.
you are perfect! :D I am from Slovakia and I' m interested in scouting, bushcraft, survival skills and all these things :) thanks for motivation to do my own spoon ;)
Thank you.
I like you. You are a nice person..and i very like your country. I will go to sweden in the next years.

Thanks a lot.
hey , beautiful to see the wood rings or veins on the final product you made, great!
A useful skill; thank you for sharing.

Thank you for the tutorial. I also liked the song choice at the end. We used to sing it a lot years ago.
Wonderful tutorial, and I love the choice of song for the outro!
Daniel Thompson Thank you.
