    if you treat the wood of the spoons with lemon juice and olive oil you can protect it from bacteria growth and keep it food safe.

    Use a Bow drill normally used in fire starting with a tip as wide and curved as you want the bowl of the spoon to be if you don't have a spoon knife. Stones from a stream or river are good for sanding if you don't have modern sand paper. sealing it with beeswax can shield you from resinous flavors of the wood.

    • @Thromper1984
      @Thromper1984 8 лет назад +6

      +Ben A. A straight knife would make the bowl a lot more crude, it could be done, but 10x more time, work and probably more sanding.

    • @ben8509
      @ben8509 8 лет назад +6

      +Thromper1984
      With respects, it's just as easy, requiring a different technique yes. I think people forget there's ALWAYS a level of sanding involved for final finish work. I've sat around many rendezvous fires and made spoons for people. It's just that simple... a spoon. Doesn't require a shop full of tools or special blades.
      If one is nervous about using your blade, burn out the bowl area of the spoon and finish from there.

    Happy to watch your videos. You have a great talent to transmit your knowledge to the public. When I was younger (40 years ago) I lived in a village of shepherds closed to the Alps and we used to carve wood to build up everyday life tools but we used srones to file the excess of wood. I can say that you did a really a good job.

  • @alexmcgregor7082

    I call bullshit on you using a special tool, instead place a glowing ember where you want the spoon to be hollowed and blow on it until the spoon head center is an ember too, let the hot coal do the work to hollow the space by blowing on it and smooth it out with a small stone when it is the desired depth, all "bushcraft" should be able to be accomplished with a knife, fire and elements of your surrounding environment.

    A useful skill; thank you for sharing.
    I have a thought - Would it be more useful as a spoon if the bowl were cranked up at an angle with respect to the handle? That way, you can dip the spoon in your pot and take the food without it spilling off the end of the bowl. You started with a thick piece of wood, and this would allow this modification.
