- My first ever attempt at carving a spoon - and my first time carving with an axe (hatchet) - I'm fairly pleased with the result.
I bought the set of woodcarving tools you see here from BangGood - and I have been thoroughly pleased with them - they are excellent steel and they were supplied razor sharp, ready to use - here's a link:

This video is a piece of art in so many ways
I can't believe it took me this long to find Atomic Shrimp's tutorial on carving of spoon.
Lol the intro cracked me up at "a sudden need for a spoon." I shouldn't laugh though, in some parts of the world that's a real danger.
Wonderful introduction. Bravo!
Walking around and your phone is dead. Then you see him- Shia LeBeouf!
the sped-up sound of the axe hitting the spoon is oddly calming
My employer is a woodworker. She gives me the scraps to use as kindling. Naturally I go through it before burning. Found a wonderful "wonky spoon". I use it in my garden. I imagine that using a natural wood spoon rather than metal spoon should make the garden grow. Still waiting.
Yes woodcarving tools and work bench, something you always have in your back pocket. Funny! =) The chosen type of wood and axework was a bit painful to watch... Otherwive nice work! Got to respect a man that can make a wooden ladle. Thumbs up!
manwiththestar yeah, oak was just what happened to be available. I hope my axe skills will improve with a bit of practice - I think I did OK for a completely self-taught first go
+AtomicShrimp try putting a big log down when you cut or you risk messing up sharp edge on your chopper 🐺👌
and the legend begins now ;)
Nicely done and thanks for the video on drying mushrooms. Cheers from across the pond.
Well I'm impressed. I'd be happy with that 😊
Remember Mr. Shrimp There Is No Spoon!!
How‘s the spoon looking today??
I bet you wished you had your log burner at the old Shrimp HQ.
Great job ! Love your channel, Alsorts of goodness 👍, on another video , can’t say I’m a fan of the meat in the Frey bentos pie, but the pastry is fantastic.
Me, who carves spoons, balls in cages, wood spirits, flowers and more: *I am 4 parallel universes ahead of you.*
ok mate
Nice job mate. Never worked oak myself. Not much around here. Hope to try it someday
Very epic
Bravo for giving it a try. If you plan to do more (and I hope you do), then please do yourself a favor and watch some videos where safe grips and cuts are explained. Paul Sellers has several, Zed Outdoors has several that are very good and there are several Scandinavian channels that are excellent as well. Full credit to you for trying but there really are some safety mistakes and it would be horrible if you were to suffer a preventable injury. Axes are not compatible with fingers.
You are a natural. You did a fantastic job! I like your use of the other half of your log for a working surface and as to not ruin your axe blade. I also like your vise. How did you make it?
Odd question, if there was a single chisel/woodcarving tool aside from a knife to make a utensil, which would it be?
Arzon Svix I think it might be an axe. Maybe a smidge smaller than this one, but I was amazed at its versatility
+AtomicShrimp great work I always has my razor sharp pocket knife to carve spoons and such I recommended highly sycamore as a good starter out carvers or hazel or birch 🐺🐾👌
+AtomicShrimp I recommended highly a bear ghrylls hatchet you can get a scary sharp edge too 🐾👌🐺
you should come and make a toasting fork!
I'm going to be living in Scotland as of May in my campervan. I plan to try to make all sorts of carved wood items. I have never done it before but I do love wood a lot and so at least my heart will be in it. Could you recommend a brand/range of tools to get me going please?
If you want small Swedish style carving knives and spoon gouges, you can't go wrong with Mora
Do you have tips for a complete beginner in this? I don't have woodcarving tools, so what would be a good alternative or should I just head out and get some? I have never really done anything like this before, but want to create something or atleast try to!
Not sure - for the rough carving, any sharp hand axe will do - that might be a good place to begin.
At 2:50, can you just saw at this point?
They say he carved it himself... from a bigger spoon.
Shia LaBoef
would love to see you build a green woodwork style lathe like this one for a video ruclips.net/video/i4roT7ohT7I/видео.html
Isn't "BangGood" a site that had like scam Ray-Bans or something?
That video was probably after that one, though.
Sadly the link gives a 404 error.
It still works for me - to find the product, go to Banggood.com and search for woodpecker carving chisel
Your ax handling appears to be very scary to me but it also appears you have all your fingers so you’re either awfully goof or lucky
Be Safe
The camera often makes these sorts of things look dangerous
