I lost count of how many times I thought "Stop! You're going to split it if you... oh, ok, I see, yes, that's right, you know what you are doing and I don't."
😂 me too!
For me I'm not so much thinking "you're gonna split it!" as I am thinking "if I were trying to do that I would definitely break it"
This is clearly not the first spoon this feller has ever seen.
The pure FEAR as I was watching this. Utterly terrified I would watch him make a mistake and then my heart would shatter.
You should try sharpening a wooden pencil with scissors for comparison
Silence from someone who knows what they are doing is a great teacher.
He's walking the walk, not talking the talk. Great teacher and craftsman indeed.

People need to be remember that silence is an more of an answer than bullshit
@@dreadpiraterobertsii4420 probably right. also there is a God who most likely we dont want to hear that talks when (most likely) we thinks that we are silent anyways,

I have never in my life seen such consistent and accurate work with an axe.
While I completely agree that he´s done outstanding work you may wanna have a look at this ruclips.net/video/LLi4E44IU9I/видео.html. This guy however IS talking a lot.
Watch Ray Mears make a canoe paddle out of a random log.
@@georgegordonbrown9522 --I just watched that video (of the Russian spoon maker). I kept thinking of the Swedish chef on the muppet show, LOL!!!
Hatchet
Where I live, pretty much everyone over the age of 50 would make this guy look like it’s his first time holding a hatchet. Their hatchets and axes are basically an extension of their body. Really amazing to see, all of their axes are kept sharp enough to shave with.
I am surprised at how incredibly soothing it is to watch him with nothing more than the sound of his breathing and the sound of the knife and hatchet. It's like therapy.
The Trackless Path this is much more relaxing than therapy! 😂
Try making it, spoon carving is tonnes of fun!!😁😁😁 I am a wood carver
@@pacificcoastpiper3949 i will - and thanks for the advice. 😊
Could have done without the Fatboy breathing, but the wood carving was top notch

I bet if they put the word "ASMR" in the title, this video would've gotten at least 3 times the views. It definetly deserved more views, that's some great work.
I was going to like this comment and then I saw it had 69 likes.... couldnt mess that up
I would have avoided it if it had asmr in the title and I’m so glad I watched this.
i don't know what ASMR means
Most likely.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Watched this video a week ago, now all I do in my free time is carve spoons. Never knew how addicting carving and whittling could be.
Hah, a convert!
Same here! Just did my third one yesterday. It's very absorbing. Takes me about 3 hours to make one, and not as good as his of course. Massive skill set he has!
@@zoltanvonsomogyi7272 I'm right there with you 2- 1/2 to 3 hours per spoon. But the time flies! The worst thing is I've broken 3 or 4 now. Unfortunately t's always right when I say I'm done and go back in to refine a detail.
@@brandonhauert9323 yes, its hard to know when to just stop and call it good. I just want to keep carving!
Which wood do you use ?
*Wife walks in*
Wife: Why are you watching a guy carve a wooden spoon?
Me: *squints eyes* I don't know.

hhhhh, same same,

wife: you always watching people working with wood.
There's something fascinating and relaxing about watching an artist who knows exactly what he's doing. He's in full control of the situation the entire time.
yeah man he's making a spoon , not landing a rocket on another planet , he's done it before :D
I saw a lump of firewood, he saw a spoon.
Coulda used a smaller piece of wood. 🤣
I saw a bear
@Adriel R *joke,* ever heard one?
Adriel R I think you’re colorblind
Jason Bullard I don’t remember anyone asking :3
Never seen such accuracy with an axe and a knife. ATB .
He's done this once or twice before, obviously. LOL
I bet he knows a thing or three about sharpening, too.
Me at 4 min: “Good enough! Time to eat!”
Its such a piece of shot spoon at four minutes. I'm so happy you said this
It looks more like a spatula. Thank you
Julia Roberts size.
I think he already ate before it started. Well by the looks of it anyways hahah
That’s his spoon for loads of cake after the video as a reward
I never thought I’d want to carve a spoon until now. That’s beautiful
Spoon carving is a great way to spend your time - and you end up with something beautiful and functional
Get a piece of wood. Remove all the notaspoon.
Thats like making a bow. Take a long piece of wood and get rid of everything that not looks like a bow :D
That would be removal of the notabow.

I think this might be the first video i've seen on youtube that doesn't start out with "hey guys..." and 5 minutes of babbling. More channels need to adopt this format! No talk, just work! I drank a beer and watched the man work in peace. Thanks for the upload!
I agree. I hate videos with intros and tons of yapping away. Get on with it. I also hate it when people end their videos with "If you like what you saw, please like and subscribe" Like if people don't do that already.
Such a pleasure to watch. No talking, adds, music. Keep up the good work. Made me realize my knife needs sharpening.
thank you. i just love the silent carving. just the sound of the metal into the wood. thanks again
How is it silent ? I hear every wack of the hatchet on the wood ? 😜
Jane Camisa It took me a while to understand that. I used to defend people who had music in their videos, I still think it’s their right to do what they want but I now prefer videos without it. I've learnt a lot in the last year or two, but maybe learning to appreciate the sound of a sharp tool on Wood is one of the better things.
Too often these videos have 80's porn music in the background. "I swear I'm watching a guy carve a spoon!"
Hey honey we ran out of clean spoon can you turn on the dish washer
“Give me 30 mins I get you a spoon”
Lewis Carroll 🤣🤣
*Sad wood noises*
No ads, no annoying music, just a skilled artisan and his wooden spoon
Pure craftsmanship. A pleasure to watch.
When I watch this I feel like I'm either using the toughest wood going (big leaf maple) or I'm absolute rubbish at sharpening my knives. Or both.
I never understood the attraction to carving a spoon, until I carved my first two spoons. The first one was alright, but the second one is an absolute staple in my kitchen. I carved it out of white oak, and its the most durable utensil in our drawer.
Did I just spend almost 30 minutes watching a man carve a spoon from wood? Yes.
Do I regret it? No.
I love when the algorithm blesses me these gems ,these absolute treasures.
This man made a spoon in 28 minutes. I attempt this and an hour later I have a pile of shavings and a crooked stick. Always nice to see a true artisan at work.
And without any gibber gabber!
Love your crooked stick. _Learn_ from your crooked stick!
Title: Silent Carving
Video: Chop chop chop chop chop
Impressive especially when you know the tools used are incredibly sharp and must be maintained that way to make it work. Control of the blade edges and using the grain structure to achieve the end result is an art form that can’t be taught from a book. Obviously feeling the spoon emerge and envision of the piece is apparent.
What a joy to watch such a craftsman. He's so proficient that he makes the whole process look easier than it actually is. Absolutely no word or music required. His hands say everything. I'm a complete novice so tutorials like these are so valuable and appreciated. Looking forward to seeing more of the same. Many thanks 👍

What was the wood ?
@@curtisloud1027 i reckon it was beech
Beautiful small muscle control behind a finely polished Edge.
It's a pleasure to watch quality work.
This video is a lesson on making a spoon… and on making a YT video. No dumb music, or wasteful filler talk. Just life in action from a master.
Love this silent carving, really insightful and fantastic to see barn’s process!
Wow, thanks for sharing your talent! You've inspired me to try this. So many times I couldn't believe what you did in a single stroke of a blade.
A real joy to watch this craftsman at work. Thank you for sharing
It's a joy watching someone do something they really love and become totally engaged. Thank you for sharing your talent. The spoon is lovely.
wow, that was quick ! takes me at least a day, lovin those curls, great vid.
No messing about. Now that's what I call a good job. Credit to you sir. Like a proper woodsman, you let the wood tell you where to go with it. Enjoyed this video very much, thank you.
VERY impressive and hipnotic.
Enjoyed the your skill. The smoothness of every stroke ...very nice.
Thanks for sharing.
I absolutely adored the way this spoon was carved. Such knowledge and dedication. Thank you.
Absolutely hypnotizing from beginning to end! I am inspired. Thank you
Wow! This was like watching Michelangelo. Skilled hands and a perfect eye. I was in awe for 28 minutes.
Haven't seen spoons carved since I was a kid, up in Western North Carolina area. I've seen whole place-sets carved, but it's been over 50-years ago. That hickory he's carving made me think of that, right off the start...
Just carving, no talking! You are the man! Thanks Master !
The silence is golden. I know you don't wake up wanting to be a perfectionist, but you manipulate it well.
New sub, first watch. Thanks.
Never imagined you'd get that much detail using a hatchet! Really amazing control!
Very nice work, I really appreciate your skill and patience. Nice to see the old craftsmanship methods are still alive.
I massively admire your confidence and accuracy with a hand axe. Simply one tool I never had the confidence to learn
Wow! This is the second time I’ve watched in just a few days. It’s a pleasure to see the skill and confidence in your hands. A really effective video.
Thank you so much
Very much appreciated watching you carving a spoon, mister. And got aware I really need to sharpen my knife.... ;-) thanks for the inspiration
This is probably the sharpest knife in the world omg
yakuelin he Also have some meaty hands to push it through.. my electronic nerd hands wouldn’t have a chance! 😂
The thing that brings me back to this video over and over again is that he grabs a tool once and when he is done with it, he's done with it. (pre-hollowing the bowl doesn't count.) Compact effort. No waste.
Wonderful work! You're so comfortable with those tools! I have to say, you've done a great job in maintaining them; they look sharp as anything!
Thanks! This was fun to watch. Excellent tool technique and wonderful lines and curves in this work of art.
Hats off Sir for this good moment of relaxation...and your skill to! that's so rare to see someone doing things like that 👍👍
Marvellous!! The spoon was there.. you "just" freed it from the surrounding wood.. Fantastic work.
Fantastic. The precision and smoothness with the knife is so nice but the precision with the hatchet is also really great. I also really liked the hook knife. Fantastic.
This got me started spoon carving. I've done three so far, and I love it! It takes me 3 hours to make something like that, but of course, not as pretty, lol.
Your best of 3 hour 👍

Love the lapel mic. This is how most of them should be used. Great skills
I tried this, and now they call ME , "NINE" !!!
Hahahahaha
Nine fingers ?
Omg you made me laugh so hard
The joy of watching such skilled work, wish I could carve spoons this beautifully!!!
A piece of wood.
Only three sharp hand tools.
Any drawing on the wood but a good eye and a lot of knowledge.
= a beautiful spoon.
Thank you for this video !
And thank you for NOT adding any kind of music, just let us hear the quiet sound of woodworking without power tools.
It's like one of these paintings that's upsite down and when the artist flips it over you're like "Oh, that's what that's supposed to be!"
this is such a great video in so many ways, the best part actually is that barn is using a cheap bahco axe. i see sooooo many people go nuts about having to get the most fancy and expensive handforged carving axe and so on. But in reality you can make beautiful spoons with simple cheap tools
I noticed the same! It goes to show the old saying "Skills over gear"
The only real difference you will see from an expensive axe and a cheap one is, the fit and finish. I personally love making something "my own" as I say. Ill spend a couple of days playing with a cheap axe and the edge, polish and handle will be just as good as a hundred dollar axe
My bet is, this guy could do it with anything.
@@robertcole7874I was gifted a quality carving axe and the difference is remarkable, it geometry is perfect and makes accurate work effortless. I found hardware store axes fine for small things like spoons but for sculpture a good carving axe helps massively.
@@johntaylor8463 I have a cheap store axe and an expensive craft axe. The main difference is how you feel when you use them. The results are the same. So... I use the better axe
I'm a bit of a carver . Your hatchet control and spoon skills were amazing to watch . I've done some spoons .. your hook knife ! That's a must buy ! Made it look easy you did . Awesome work! Nice sharp tools . Great skill . Perfect . Loved watching this.
This is perhaps one of the best spoon carving videos online. No stupid and useless yaking, only efficiently and results! 👍🏻
I think he most probably can carve a spoon just with his nails! Amazing talent and self confidence. I was waiting to see the hollowed portion go for a hike. He just kept on chopping away my doubts.
One of the coolest carving videos I’ve ever watched. Your attention to detail is like no other ! Absolutely awesome work! Are these spoons available for purchase ?
Every single movement is calculated. A pleasure to watch so much skill in such a short amount of time. 🙏
Loved this video caption is pure and so is everything else. No blah blah about how you know what wood it is or what axe you used in the beginning, pick up that wood carve what you want and just be in the moment. Thanx for sharing
Thanks for sharing your talent. You have inspired me to do better. At the very least, to sharpen my tools.
Friggin amazing axe skill.
Edit. And with everything else.
What a beautiful piece of craftsmanship!
Never thought I'd be mesmerized by someone making a spoon with an axe! What artistry.
Dang dude! You have some serious hatchet skills. I went outside this after watching your video and tried it. I ended up with a pile of kindling
oh the joys of a sharp tool who needs words when art is created . nice scout hat btw ..god bless you and your family my friend
I agree that the video is fascinating, but I don't think that is a scout cap. The emblem is that of the Prince of Wales; three white feathers rather than a fleur de lis.
Absolutely amazing, that’s craftsmanship. Love how you worked that knife like it was a wood plane. Looking forward to more of your videos.
I am

B) a person who often checks their phone while watching videos
And C) a person who usually needs to get up and snack on something or move around while watching videos...
While watching this video I did NONE of that... I just watched. And my breath slowed, and my heart warmed, and I felt a little more human. So... thank you for that, I didn't realize how much I needed it.
When he starts the bowl with the axe, i hold my breath. The I remember it's Barn, and I breathe again!
😲 He is SOO precise with that axe..
Beautiful work! What a craftsmanship!
I very much like these designs. Saddle top spoons look especially cool. Great job. Cheers
You can tell this is a guy who’s been doing this for a long time. Amazed how much precision he has while hacking away with an axe.
For having not spoken a word, this guy sure had a chip on his shoulder!🤣
Well done sir!😁
Best spoon carving video yet. Loved it. Great job 👍
Such precision! I'm amazed. Well done.
Nearly 13k views and only 386 likes? Really? Come on people. This is a superb film for a list of reasons: The only talking is done by the tools and the wood. The carving techniques on display are classic, time-honoured and a delight to watch. The wood itself is beautiful, as soft as an apple - a joy to see and hear the slices peeling away. The eagle-eyed will have spotted the rounded tips to the knives, to prevent drag and cut-in. And the size of that spoon-knife!
This film deserves ten times the views and a matching number of likes. If you're a carver and don't click that button, then shame on you.
If people are like me they have liked it once and watched it 20 times :)
