Hi Robb, glad to see you're healing albiet slowly. I think the 800,000 baht retirement visa has some looking elsewhere. Fawn was looking gorgeous in that jacket at the rooftop bar.
Hey Robb - any thoughts on places to just hang out in the city? Before I left, I was looking for a spot to sit and draw on my iPad while watching the city pass by. Ya Mo in the center seems fine, but come summer, it’ll be crazy sitting outside mid-day. The only other spots to sit and watch the world pass by, seems to be the malls.
You’ve nailed it so far. The central “fortification” area and monument are awesome (and historical), the malls are nice for rainy or hot weather. All three of them are really nice. I also like to find the cafes. So many are unique and beautiful- I wouldn’t pass that up.
I took my darling to Lebua in Bangkok. The hotel was actually reasonably priced and included one of the best breakfast buffets I have ever had. But dinner at the cheaper rooftop restaurant was easily the most expensive meal I've ever paid for. I got the 5 course dinner for my darling and it was IIRC just under 10,000 baht. A simple martini was 1300 baht. The views were amazing and they had a live band with Thai musicians and an African American female vocalist. Extremely good band playing lots of western music. You only live once.
I've visited Vietnam like 5 times now, and I've lived in Bangkok for 5 months at this very moment...In the end, in these type of South East Asian countries, it comes down to how "smart" and financially "savvy" and "diligent" one is: in, for example, Da Nang the prices are very low (I've been on vacation there), go to Ho Chi Minh City and the differences are minute to non-existing between Ho Chi Minh and Bangkok...again it is a big country and the difference between prices for, for example, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City is bigger than between Chiang Mai and Bangkok...but all in all they are very similar.
Maybe it sounds sexist to agree with you but I do. It just seems to bring fewer problems, but this is the same as I always was. I never dated any girls that also liked heavy metal music or other such things

I have followed you for a respectable amount of time now. I lived in Vietnam for a while and currently live in Chiang Mai. I would love to discuss a few things with you regarding my situation. We can talk in Thai or English as you prefer.
How would you compare living in Vietnam to living in Thai ? .. i mean in terms of people as opposed to climate, cost of living etc .. I find certain (western) personalities are either suited to one or the other country Having lived in both countries, Thailand somehow wins out for me
The pills are called Yaba (crazy medicine). It's a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine. Not that long ago average "retail" price in a place like Bangkok it was 200 baht a pill. Now the price is 25 - 50 Baht.
Yes, on one hand you never have any real issues with getting your visa or anything come, because you’re not gonna get one. You just leave Vietnam within 90 days every time go to Thailand or Bangkok like my friend Kevin does for a weekend or so and then go back. Seems to work and it works great for me and Kevin. We both really enjoy the Bangkok trips which another one is actually coming up right now.
I don't know what you touched at 05:00 but suddenly the audio is crispy clear😬 Did you write the book yourself or used A.I dictation and bullet points...I enjoy your videos but despise the A.I written books on Amazon.
Thanks. New mic coming (again!). No, I wrote the book 100% organically and you can tell. It is super dense with info and personal stories to relate to.
@segarnyagold1014 thanks. Yeah, at some point in the future it’d be really nice for me to hear some feedback from somebody who read one of the earlier auditions and then read the third edition, maybe somebody who has an Amazon membership and they have access to the newer one for free.
I agree with you as regards retirement destination, it's so individual, it's what is the best fit for you and only you can and should decide this. Certainly the videos and opinions of others could help but they are only opinions at the end of the day. I have been to Vietnam and spent a couple of months there, it and Thailand are the same but different, sorry if that sounds ridiculous but you have to experience both to decide. I personally did not like the Philippines, lovely people , awful traffic, noise, dirt, pollution etc...... Your decision is all that matters and to me it's the overall picture from the costs, safety, environment, the people and of course, the bureaucracy . Stay safe :)
I think Korat offers the best of both worlds in that it is very cheap to live there as opposed to BKK and the main tourist areas in terms of housing , food and drink , entertainment etc, but is also fairly westernised compared with some of the other areas much further into the isan region. Once the high speed rail link opens it really will make travelling to BKK very easy and convenient. If only it had a functional airport for internal and SE Asia short haul then i really think it would be unbeatable.
@Aaron-ep9ne Bangkok is huge, yes that's the problem, I don't like big city's having grown up in small villages in the UK. Korat offers a respectable sized city with good amenities for westerners but 10 miles out of the centre I am in the middle of fields with about 5 neighbours and peace and quiet. A cramped apartment in the outskirts of BKK would be my idea of a living hell.
Kevin here (alias not Kevin). Last year I visited Ho Chị Mình City (aka Saigon), and Vùng Tao. Then in the Mekong Delta area visited Ben Tre and Tra Vin which are considered west Vietnam. Then moving up toward the central coast area, checked out nhà Trắng, DaNang, Hỏi An, and Dalat. Also visited Hanoi up north. Would like to explore more of the north but so far I think I like Dalat the best. It’s a smaller city in the mountains with cooler weather. Just a few hours bus ride to Nhà Trắng beach. Dalat reminds me allot of Northern California where I’m from. I’m currently living in District 2 of HCMC. When my rental contract is up in March we may move to Dalat. TBD.
@ksmithpmp hey Kevin I think my question to Rob related to his opening statement that Vietnam is more expensive than Thailand. I probably should have been more specific when I asked is Rob comparing APPLES TO APPLES what the cost of living in the cities. How does Ho chi Minh City compared to bangkok?
I do not know about most traditional Isaan women do not drink alcohol. Maybe the older women do not drink but women between 20-40 years old certainly drink whiskey and beer.
@@JamesClampitt-b3q not as much as you think and I didn't refer to just America. Thais overall aren't really party drinkers. In South Korea now many soju bars that are near Seoul University have shutdown due to lower demand. Similar in Japan. In Ireland warning labels are being put on alcohol much line tobacco. Many younger folks taking up non alcohol beer now. I am near 40 and most my age totally given up alcohol.
Apparently you have not gone to Issan provinces during the evening hours as women drink alcohol at restaurants and bars. The young generations between 20-40 drink like fish S I live there for 4 years.
@JamesClampitt-b3q not where I live. I tell guys coming here to look consider dating traditional Thai-Isan women that either don’t drink or drink very very little. IME, this is a good option.
That whole chasing thing in dating scene is fairly outdated now in the younger generation. Most of people my Millennial age men and women are more independent. Going to Vietnam it's not much different. People meet online, hookup, have fun. Vietnamese people tend to prefer similar aged partners.
I haven't uploaded to my other channel since 2019, real videos anyway. I still have a block log of footage from Thailand to edit. I just can't be bothered.
I love BKK roof top bars. ..Why can't we have nice things in the West?? Rob, what is the cultural impact of smoking cigars in the provinces? The ladies don't like it, but if you shower and brush, its all good?
Yes, I think it’s fine. I had to explain the differences between a cigar and a cigarette, that’s my personal belief anyone that wants to smoke whatever is fine by me, and then explain how I have that with the whiskey which when they see, I drink a small amount completely straight They see it’s very different than what they’re doing and then they see that I’m never drunk and I explained the culture of typically a man over 40 some years old having one once a week once a month or something all that stuff. And then you hit on a key point hygiene and cleanliness and then I always brush my teeth after it’s probably a good idea anyways, right?
I've found that comparing expat cost-of-living numbers is of little practical value. The number of variables is too large and the range of values for each variable is too wide. The distribution of values for each variable tends to be random, and variables are, at best, only loosely correlated. For example , even something as simple as saying that 2 different expats spend 600 THB/day on food is meaningless, as a point of comparison. Why? Because the first expat might be eating 3 meals per day, cooked at home, at an average cost of 100 THB per meal, plus another 300 THB in beer & snacks, while the second is eating only two meals per day, in restaurants, at an average cost of 300 THB per meal, and only drinking water. A third expat might be spending 300 THB/day, but also eating only two meals per day, in restaurants, spending an average of 150 THB per meal, and also drinking water. So, is the first or third expat a closer lifestyle match to the second? What if the first and third expats are eating mostly Thai food, while the seond is eating mostly Western food? As far as I can tell, expats can live on virtually any amount, ranging from as low as free-loading, to the-sky-is-the-limit, in almost any country, depending on their individual circumstances. Just an idle thought... don't take anything I say seriously. :) Great content, as always, Robb!
Great comment! Thank you very much for sharing. In my opinion, you are exactly on point, that’s why I really never recommend any of those the “cost to live here or there” videos. Really, funny guy who is on unlimited budget and looking to retire you can absolutely do that, and you can absolutely make yourself happy. I gotta do a video that covers this no more pointed way, kinda like you just said.
Excellent comment. However I think the 20000 baht subsidy is a fair amount in most places in Thailand . It's better than the average wage for a high school graduate woman. In addition to that there are unbudgeted medical costs for her and maybe her family. Basically you're the one who should be setting limits, I mean it's coming out of your bank . It also depends on what kind of lady you end up with and that's personal choice If she is high maintenance and you got the financial ability who is to say you shouldn't? I mean some of us drive regular cars. Like a Toyota, Honda, etc and some of us drive a BMW, Mercedes or a Porsche. Right? But they all take you from A to B! You got my drift?
@consulthai yes, giving money to a Thai woman is extremely dangerous honestly in a lot of ways. It is even reasonably possible to end up dead doing such a thing and many guys each year. Find that out the hard way unfortunately. You really need to make sure absolutely sure that you’re dealing with good, traditional, honest, considerate people beforehand. In my opinion, that takes about two years.
@@resetwithrobb All the Thai women I know have much more money than I do. So, if I were married to any of them, I would be the one receiving a subsidy... lol. :)
@@resetwithrobbsurely it’s ‘housekeeping’ or your personal household contribution rather than a salary as she manages all the meal/home expenses and you’re living at her property?
@BoninBrighton well- “salary” is colloquialism. And it’s not especially accurate. The translation is from the term “money - month”. I actually elaborate on this a little bit in an upcoming video. The key from a foreign man’s side is, in my opinion, a woman would not ask for support of any kind prior to about a year into a real relationship. And then I thinks it’s far better if the person giving the support has at least a reasonable idea as to what that money is going to g towards. In our case, Fawn has costs involving her children’s family and her rental room business.
@@resetwithrobb ah I see, yes the translation can be misinterpreted in western minds as salary which implies a job of work with certain connotations attached. It’s a problematic term when applied to a personal relationship. Is there maybe two elements: one part being money for your ‘keep’ ie your contribution towards living costs which most would see as reasonable and the second part being your voluntary contribution towards the additional personal ‘family’ costs of your girlfriend? It’s the second part that’s more of an issue for some maybe?
@BoninBrighton at this point we’re fully intertwined- which is a good thing the way we’ve done it. We don’t figure costs for groceries r other daily expenses. Honestly we typically both offer to pay and Fawn is always proud to be able to pay for some things when she can. The monthly part is really just general support for her larger financial obligations to her children and family- which are the same things that were crushing her financially.
One of the big differences between Philippines and the rest of Southeast Asia is that in the Philippines, the local food is not so great so you may have to pay up to eat better, more western food. whereas in almost all other southeast Asian countries (Burma / Myanmar exception) you can eat like a local and be perfectly happy.
@maybe. I don’t doubt that what they sell in Bangkok is appealing. But I’m talking about is what I experienced inside of Burma. Lots of fish paste kind of food. Same with China. what I ate in China bore little resemblance to what you would find at Chinese food restaurants in the USA.
I am not sure how to avoid agent orange that USA loved do much and now at half shelf live although not talked about a big issue in food and deformaties ... although most will call me rediculous i saw it firsthand so freaks me out to eat vietnam food 😮 I did speak French there and some seniors will dispise you ... anyways, that is just a few negatives and a good life can be found there for those that wish 😊
Many Thai women living in a city are more Westernized than Vietnamese women because Thailand has have a very strong influence of Western Culture. As a Laotian man, I know this quite well😂American cultures, and language have been practiced throughout Asia even how to propose a woman to marry they copy from Americans.
This is true IME. Thanks for sharing. For a “good Thai woman” you really want to be out in the country or at least waaay away from the tourist areas. Nothing g good comes from that association.

Find that out the hard way unfortunately. You really need to make sure absolutely sure that you’re dealing with good, traditional, honest, considerate people beforehand. In my opinion, that takes about two years.
@@resetwithrobb All the Thai women I know have much more money than I do. So, if I were married to any of them, I would be the one receiving a subsidy... lol. :)
Talking budget and cost between cities and countries is so subjective.
Did l hear you right that you pay Fawn a salary?
Yes. She never asked and I waited until after we were together for 18 months . Gotta be careful.
The monthly part is really just general support for her larger financial obligations to her children and family- which are the same things that were crushing her financially.
obnoxious, is the first word that comes to my mind
One of the big differences between Philippines and the rest of Southeast Asia is that in the Philippines, the local food is not so great so you may have to pay up to eat better, more western food. whereas in almost all other southeast Asian countries (Burma / Myanmar exception) you can eat like a local and be perfectly happy.
Burmese food is pretty good. there are a few places in bangkok that serve it. filipino food definitely worst food in se Asia.
@maybe. I don’t doubt that what they sell in Bangkok is appealing. But I’m talking about is what I experienced inside of Burma. Lots of fish paste kind of food. Same with China. what I ate in China bore little resemblance to what you would find at Chinese food restaurants in the USA.
I am not sure how to avoid agent orange that USA loved do much and now at half shelf live although not talked about a big issue in food and deformaties ... although most will call me rediculous i saw it firsthand so freaks me out to eat vietnam food 😮
I did speak French there and some seniors will dispise you ... anyways, that is just a few negatives and a good life can be found there for those that wish 😊
Two minutes I stopped watching, you need to get the point
Many Thai women living in a city are more Westernized than Vietnamese women because Thailand has have a very strong influence of Western Culture. As a Laotian man, I know this quite well😂American cultures, and language have been practiced throughout Asia even how to propose a woman to marry they copy from Americans.
This is true IME. Thanks for sharing. For a “good Thai woman” you really want to be out in the country or at least waaay away from the tourist areas. Nothing g good comes from that association.
