I thought I was kinda bad at singing because "normal" range female songs are usually right in the crack in my voice, in the hardest place to sing comfortably. But I just need to embrace my low range. Higher is not better.
I have always loved singing. Even signing in the shower has always brought me peace. Yesterday I tried an app that detects range & it turns out they labeled me as an alto! As a total beginner with only amateur skill/practice I feel that vocals are something I would love to keep working on. The best part about vocals is that your instrument is your own voice and I find that so cool. I can’t misplace my voice and it costs absolutely nothing to practice. The gratitude I feel from realizing my potential is such a beautiful feeling. This is my first video I’ve watched since seriously considering working on my vocal skills so thank you for all the amazing info.❤️
Did you use Simply Sing? 😂 I just discovered I’m an alto as well and I’m finding it weird cuz I tend to sing mezzo and I find it more comfortable 🤣 Time to embrace being an alto I guess… 🤭
I’m an alto but I’ve been struggling with singing without sounding like the artist this video is so helpful in school I remember doing solos as an alto I hated that my voice was considered low but I can reach high notes easily as well I thought I transitioned to soprano lmao until I saw this video can you please make one on how you found your natural voice to prevent mimicking I want to sound like me if that makes any sense 😢
Altos: Cher, Rihanna, Pink, Melissa Etheridge, Shania Twain, Madonna, Ann Wilson (from the band Heart), Micki Steele (from the band the Bangles), Sade, Annie Lennox, Stevie Nicks Contraltos: Tracy Chapman, Kareen Lomax, Amy Winehouse, KD Lang, Judy Garland, Etta James True contraltos are rarer than altos.
One of my favorite to sing is Unbreak my Heart by Toni Braxton. That low intro is GOLD and feels so good to my voice. I can really play with runs too!! Great video and descriptions also 😁
I found out in the 7th grade in chorus class that I was a alto and I believe it lol because I can’t hit no high notes for nothing. My voice has no strain singing regular
I always thought my singing voice was ugly because I can go way low with my voice. I just had my first voice lesson and I can go lower than my teacher. Thank you. I feel more confident about my voice now.
It sounds like you could be a contralto. If that's the case, be proud that you have a rare voice type. 😁 I'm borderline contralto (Just one note off) And I finally learned to embrace my alto voice. We have that sultry sexiness. lol
@HR-zj3eo Yeah, alto is comfortable to sing, but my throat really loved to go low. It's almost like I'm growling when I sing. If I make my voice really raspy, I can get it even lower. I can also follow along really well with the soprano warm ups, too.
Tony Braxton, Tracy Chapman and Sade are my "go to". I love them! There are a few Beyoncé songs that I like to sing too, especially from the Lemonade and Beyoncé albums, like haunted, sandscastles and heaven.
I'm a contralto (Bb2-C3 at my lowest on any given day), but I have a SUPER bright tone. Think newborn baby bright. My voice teacher was convinced I was a soprano that just didnt unlock my voice yet. As I'm struggling to hit an E5. And then was SHOCKED when I accidentally sang down the octave in the tenor range because she never gave me a chance to sing in my comfort zone. Trust me. You do not want to be a contralto. Boy sung songs are always about one semitone too low, other boy sung songs are too high and you have to face the fact that pop countertenors are out of your range (on the high end!), and basically every song done by a female is too high somewhere. I can sing about half of every single song in existence. Just not a full song of anything without transposing a single section.
@@myaaishere Contraltos are determined based on various criteria. I meet literally all of them. That's how I'm a contralto. Can't belt above c5? Check. Can sing below e3? Check. Can sing below c3? Check. Can hit a2? Not every day. But about one of ever 7 days. Can hit g2, I did once. More comfortable in low range than high? Check. What criteria do you imagine I don't meet for being a contralto? Cool you have a broad range. I don't. My sister does though. She's probably about d3-e6. But she's a soprano because she's more comfortable in her top end, finds singing low uncomfortable, and can hit those high notes.
I got down a rabbit hole on RUclips and found your channel because I was curious about vocal ranges. Your voice is magical to listen to spoken or sung!
I love to hear a good alto voice. They are incredible. I'm a tenor but I really wish to have a deep, cold and rusky voice. I had practice my low notes singing alto songs. Altos and Basses disserves so much love ❤
This makes sense cause I really love singing Brandy songs! When I was younger and she first came out my friends would say I sounded like her when singing her songs.
You just named so many songs I love singing!! And I just auditioned for a womens choir and the musical director put ne Alto 1. When I was younger I was soprano.
Your video really just gave me confidence, I always could sing but was listening to the wrong people which made me believe I couldn’t an we do have beautiful voice
When you started to sing in your alto samples…as a fellow alto…my choir director in high school called me a natural alto…your voice made my cry with pride and alto sisterhood
So true! Such a magical tone. I have the range and find comfort in soprano but more recently, I’ve challenged myself to nurture the warmer depths of my natural alto voice & harmony. It’s TRULY a challenge. Any tips for training the ear?
Great video, Yona! Very encouraging... This information has absolutely caused me to embrace my alto/deep singing voice more. Your voice is amazing. Thanks for sharing ❤

Would you really like to be a contralto? Really? I'm a contralto, and sometime I hate my dark timbre, because everything I sing sounds not how it should sound! The Mezzopart is not that light, bright and easy, as it should, and the easy tenor part sound weard because it's a female voice... My voicalrange is from C3 up to E5, sometimes F5. For songs from musical theatre it is most times not high enough. The mezzo sopranos hit easely notes up to C6 and higher... And it sounds not that good with my voice anyway... 😔 But, hey, not everybody can sing a romantic duett with himself...

Alto is higher for the female voice part
Do you do voice lessons?
But what about some one like me that sing lower than normal altos from E3 to F5
check out the contralto range yonamariemusic.com/yona/blog/364/the-contralto-voice-range-and-capabilities
Is alto the worst?
There is no “worst” voice. You just need to listen and learn ❤❤❤
That's like asking if one color is the "worst."
You are so amazing. Make a class
Karen Carpenter is my favorite alto singer.
ive never heard alto being tied with women hell im watching yo vids to learn how to use my deep voice for singing lmao
Annie Lennox is another
Taylor Dane yet another!
Idk if I'm alto or soprano or mezzo😂
I just figured out I was an alto wtf
Karen carpenter was an alto
