  • Today's tip is all about how to check the exterior lights on your car! Watch as I guide you through the steps that I take to ensure that all the lights are working on my truck all of which can be used for your car also!
Checking your external lights is an often overlooked task that can get you into a few headaches down the road. Police like to stop people for bad brake lights or turn signals and the folks running your local car inspection place like to FAIL you for bad lights. Don't give them the chance and stay safer on the road as a bonus.
Haha Fun fact. I did indeed kill my truck's battery in the filming of this video.

So what did you guys find? Any bulbs out?

Thanks for your tips on the brake light. Didn't have any to prop the pedal, it was too sunny to use a wall and I don't have a security system I can use.
However, that last one gave me the idea to prop my phone somewhere I could record my brakes lights as I pressed the pedal and it worked like a charm. Thumbs up for video!

So put the parking break on or handbrake. Then go reverse without the car turning on, to check the reverse lights.

Thanks for the video.... I'd not realised that the reversing lights will come on even when the engine isn;t fully running... A friend borrowed my car the other day, and as he was bringing back I noticed one of the reversing lights was out, but couldn;t recall which one, so need to test myself

Thankyou very much. For the turn signals should you engage the turn signal lever for that instead of 4 ways? Maybe theres that connection could be faulty in the lever?

  • @Highsteel21

Good advise. You can use your phone to record the brake lights as well. Thanks 🙏

With the emergency break on, putting the car in reverse will be disengaged no matter what?

I dont have a working E-brake. At home I park on a small forward incline with my wheels turned into the curb. So I was at a store and a guy I knew came up to me in the store and said I had a tail light or brake light out on the drivers side. I made it a few blocks back home and parked. Now I need to go somewhere but I need to make sure my lights work. I have nobody to help me and no place I can back up to or prop my phone. For video. So I'm going to take something heavy to push the brake peddle. I'll let you know the results. I live in a small town and I dont have to do inspections. I dont know how to fix my E-brake. I'm a sr. lady on a small fixed income so I can't go to a mechanic. I carry a block of wood in my truck and put it in front of my rear tire as needed. But the curb where I always park holds my pickup just fine. My truck is a manual 5-speed. Should be easy...right?

That's quite a lot of exceptions you have going on there! It sounds like you have things figured the best way you can and you're making it work! Keep it up!

@@HSZGarage I tried the heavy jug of driver and when I checked I could swore they worked. But I found out later backed up to a wall that the brake light didnt work. My son in law tried to find one at a couple junk yards but he forgot to take some tools with. He was gonna kill 2 birds with 1 stone as he was taking his mom to a doc appt. Well it turns out that the brake lite receptacle was burnt. Short I guess? Rather than cut the wires and replace just that receptacle I bought a whole new unit at the auto parts for $80. I couldn't find one online anywhere. My lens had a couple cracks anyway. It might've leaked later and caused some trouble for me. Had a little trouble putting it in cuz it was like one of the screws was going in crooked. I just kept adjusting by pushing it in and up & down and finally got it. I think anyway. Not like in the 60's & 70's enen the 80's things were so much easier and cheaper. But I'm good. Street legal as far as cops can tell. Thanks for your comment! Thoughtful of you. Namaste!

So, how do you find out if your brake lights work if your by yourself?... Mirrors?

At around the 3:00 mark in the video I begin to discuss 3 different methods for how to check the brake lights yourself. The easiest method is just having a helper but in the event that you don't have one you can weigh the brake pedal down with a brick or jack stands and then go and check the brake lights. Or, back up close to a wall, preferably at night, and then check your mirrors to see which ones are lighting up. Hope this helps!

@@HSZGarage Yea, I got a box and filled it with some tools and pushed it up against the brake pedal... lol... it worked so I'm ok with it. Thnx for the reply and thnx for the hints.

The fact that there is no easy way to check your brake lights just boggles my mind. Car manufacturers install thousands of dollars useless electronics and yet there's no way to check your brake lights.
