Carl Palmer was so much better of a performer during his heyday than Keith Moon could have ever dreamed of being. Palmer was such an innovator that inspired generations of other drummers. I never really cared for ELP until I heard the 2002 DVD-AUDIO 5.1 release of Brain Salad Surgery. It’s a masterpiece. Asia was my favorite collaboration that Palmer was involved in though. Palmer is a showman before anything else.

Amazing drumming here, really Carl Palmer was a fabulous drummer and showman as well. But IMHO, he started to decline halfway the 90s. Through 1970-77 with ELP was penomenal, creative, powerful, as he was in the first three Asia records. Even his drumming was amazing in the worst ELP album, Love Beach (well, with the exception of Canario and Memoirs of an officer and a gentleman, and perhaps All I want is you). But he went downhill, perhaps focusing more on his solos (sorry, folks but every time I watch videos of his current ELP thing, the drums sound horrible to me).
One proof of his decline is to listen to Heat Of The Moment 1982 and the re record in 2008. In 1982, those drums were terrific; in 2008, you barely notice there are drums.
I have friends who are drummers and many tell me the same. I went to see him with his band in 2017, and I didn't like him at all; just noise, trying to show everybody he could play as fast in his 70s as he did in his 20s or 30s.
I prefer to listen and watch to this Carl Palmer, the creative, innovator, fabulous showman, powerful drummer of the 70s and early 80s, and a bit of the 90s., until 1995, 96 perhaps. And no more.
    Just my thoughts.
