I’m 74 years old. Played college golf and have had many many lessons. Was on vacation last week and happened to see your video on chipping. I then realized that this also works on the full swing. Went to the range the next day. Wow!! Went home and threw all my instruction books away. Played 3 times since and broke 80 each time! Thank you so much!

Darrel - years ago I bought many of your videos and books. Got away from you - a mistake. Just found you again on RUclips - so glad I did. Not only are you entertaining but your coaching is the best. I am enjoying golf again.

I have a back injury and had a operation and you probably help a great deal on making great contact on the ball and with my swing because of my rotation thanks 😊

There are so many teachers with different styles or approaches to this shot. Paul Runyan was a great player and teacher who taught folks to play chip shots like a putt vs. chopping. Many teach using the arms for a pendulum stroke instead of being really "handy" while chopping. What is one to do? I guess try each and use the one that works best.

How about the hinge and hold method which Phil says is the only way to chip. Dannie

Basically the same concept of not flipping the club up and increasing bounce and loft, just a different execution. Hinge and hold is a different shot and different reaction from the ball (less check/more release).

Thats exactly what this is .

In practicality I find the hinge and hold method to be difficult without lots of practice and like most casual golfers I don’t have the time to be constantly practicing chipping. Phil has amazing hands and for golfers to think they can get remotely close to replicating his success by using his method I think is folly. The polar opposite is the Steve Stricker type putting motion of chipping. Much simpler and I don’t think requires the constant tuning and repetition. The issue I have with his is that on my public golf courses with non-perfect conditions you occasionally get lies for chips that require more of a downward chopping motion.

LOL! There isn't a pro in the universe that uses that wristy/chopping chipping method = awful.

Thought the same thing!!! He suggested his student, Harold, uses his wrists/hands, and that Harold played w/ Phil Mickelson in San Diego. Phil wouldn't spot him a stroke because he noticed that he chips/pitches the ball the same way he does. Smh.

I've been teaching this for a while. People use this weird putting stroke method, and I think it's BS. You can't come in that shallow, you must be aggressive, and strike ball first. People don't use the hands enough in chipping, and I'm tired of pros who should know better teach a putting action. It strikes me as odd that me being self taught I know better than teaching pros who should easily have more knowledge than I about this, but are a complete 180 degrees from correct. Just odd is all.

I honestly think the putting method is for those who just want to hit it, not people trying to score, I tell me kids to putt their chips just so their next shot is a putt, but this will deffinatly come in to play very soon.
