5:58 Who else pulls these staccatos this magically? Only the master Richter himself.
I'm speechless. No words can describe this perfection in every way.
It compels you to watch it often. Such perfection is like a magic potion. Superhuman. Exquisite . Richter is unique .
9:53 pure beauty ....
it's one of the best recordings Richter ever made.
all of Richter recordings are the best!:)
@@nilskittel2006 certainly not
Plainly put, Richter was a complete GENIUS.!!
Such command and mastery. Imperial playing. He's one of a kind. Thank God he lived in a time where video was possible. Imagine if we got to watch Liszt or Karl Tausig on video!
Absolute Genialität des Klavierspiels! Infam das Urteil eines Andrei Gawrilow!
an historical recording
Finally I understood the composer
Perhaps Mendelssohn himself would be surprised ...........
It doesn’t get any better than this.
Good sound! And stupendous playing.
S.Richter, Concert Pianist:
The “Variations Serious” (1966) Recording: Opus 54 by Mendelssohn.
An outstanding and challenging piece for any advanced pianist. It is most Gratifying when you can play through whole work in one sitting!
How amazing-how he sequesters the poetry in the chorales and is so committed to each note. What a priceless document. I hope the rest of this recital will surface soon-I believe there was more than just the two rachmaninoff numbers
Richter King of nailing “the difficult part”
nailing and expressing it :)
Thanks for uploading and sharing!
Despite the inferior sonics, the most awe inspiring performance of this masterpiece I have heard!
You could have used "sound" instead of "sonics", which is a drive-in burger joint:

Don't worry CLASSICALFAN, this kind of moron is listening to the sound quality, not to the music.
die Hände !
One of a kind!
I'm the only one here hearing a bit of Prokofiev in his Mendelssohn...? I like more the contrapunctus than the percussive parts. Anyway a great interpretation
Richter didn't need a polished piano. And see the chair! The man said he didn't like himself and there could have been some social cultural reason for that, as was the case with Tjaikofsky. Life's cruel sometimes.
:.(
Correction --- Life's cruel ALL THE TIME for most of us. RIP, "Slava"...

Inimitabile
either he's huge or that piano is only 3 feet wide @_@
Hes huge
Wie stark ist nicht dein Zauberton!
What hall is this? Doesn't look like any I know. Maybe something in the Kremlin?

a more relevant statement abut mendelssohn could never have been made

Boring bland rendition. S.Richter doesn't understand Mendelssohn.

Go on a diet, fat clogged your ears.
How so? His playing is the furthest from being boring. It's got plenty of energy and nuance. If that is not the antithesis of boredom then I don't know what is. But maybe it is more accurate to say that at the moment at which you listened to it you found it boring or that according to your particular taste it was boring. I mean, some people find Bach boring - others don't. Different times of one's life, age, culture, knowledge etc. all adds to what we perceive as boring or not. I think that when thinking of such a great artist as Richter one cannot simply brush it off as boring. One could call a beginner pianist boring or a pianist adding nothing as boring - but to think of Richter as boring is just your personal feeling at the point at which you listened to this recording.
