How To Crosscut With A Circular Saw FAST & SIMPLY! ruclips.net/video/Pkk-KLZuUZ0/видео.html
If you use your saw enough and are confident you know the offset from your blade to the saw base, you can just subtract that from your measurement and hit that line with the speed square. More faster.
It’s safe to say no one has ever confused you with being Larry Haun
Even Larry could have improved on a couple of things. Not knocking him, just sayin'...
Larry haun is a legend he wrote the book on how to be an effective framer
Underrated comment right here. LARRY IS A GOD
😂
I sure hope not, that is what I strive for.
That great for a cut or 2... but if I'm building a whole wall or more, I'm gonna set my miter saw stand stops for 91" and then I only have to measure once.
Same, I ain't wasting time and energy with a circular saw when I can just set up my miter saw and ride it home.
Really? Do you guys work diy or commercial?
@Nathan Gilbert I run a small residential construction business. Not sure what that has to do with anything though.
@@moungie7 big difference between a general contractor who might throw some studs every week and a framer throwing 500 a day.
@Nathan Gilbert I agree...and I'm assuming someone who throws 500 isn't gonna get out a square and a circular saw when time is money.
I’ll give you more practical information. USE EAR PROTECTION! I have permanent tinnitus from screaming Skill Saws assaulting my ears in the 1970’s. I can’t turn on anything now without my ear buds popped in first. 😖
25 years in machine shops, tinnitus is killing me, it's affecting my sleep, focus and most of all deer hunting, sucks
I like ear muffs better. Look up Extreme Isolation. There made for music but more comfortable than 3M or gun range models . I have hyperaccusis which is like a cousin to tinnitus. Get off refined sugar which will help with inflammation.
@@allen4758 hey brother I'm sorry to hear this. I've been right there worried sick. All I could think about was how I'll be hearing eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee for the rest of my life. It consumed me. That was until I learned to LET GO. Accept it and be ok with it and stop focusing on it. I PROMISE you once you let go and just live your life (with the proper hearing protection moving forward) it WILL quiet down. Down so much I hardly notice it. Seriously. Only at night in bed and that's only if... I'm thinking about it haha. There's lots of snake oil salesman out there selling a cure for tinnitus and it's ALL BFS!
The only legit person that speaks publicly on this is Julien Cowen Hill. He introduced the whole acceptance and letting go approach and it gave me my life back on God. Check his RUclips out. The only thing "sells" relating to T is a book he wrote about his story. As he should. Any who I hope that helps. You'll be ok you just have to realize it first.
P.S. I wear my Walker's game ear electronic ear muffs while I'm hunting elk & deer during the rifle season. They have diff styles too.
Welp. That's it for me tonight.
Peace,
-JJO
Insists his way is the right way to do it, then misses his mark...
He didn't miss the mark. He marked right at 91". If he cut on the mark, it would be short of 91" due to the width of the blade cut, that is why you cut just to the side of the mark.
I’m still tryna find where he’s insisting his way is the right way…
@@ramblingrodriguez3558 DON'T USE A MITRE SAW TO CUT STUDS in the title
@RepinsTsohg clearly this jason dude has never cut the right measurement.
It's another way to measure and cut. It's called leave the line. There's also take the line. Both ways are valid.
If I have a miter saw I'll use it. If I don't, I figured that out years ago.
I would use a mitre saw everytime and I have 20 years more experience in carpentry.
Every time on every stud in a house?
The first thing is set up the miter saw .if not I do it just like he showed
It boggles my mind people would use a miter saw for framing. Would you even wrassle a pressure treated 2x12x16 up onto the miter saw? What's the benefit other than you don't have to draw a square line? Circular saw is faster, easier on the body, more versatile, cheaper blades usually, more portable... c'mon don't be silly
@@kevinr3263 Exactly.
@@kevinr3263you think a wall stud is 16' long? Really?
Too many people place more emphasis on optimization instead of practical productivity, because they want everyone to know how smart they are. A worker gets the job done with what they got.
Speed squares are awesome for quick, mobile and relatively accurate cuts.
So is skill, just learn to use the tool
I’d rather use a miter saw. It’s easier and quicker.
Seems safer too. I use the miter saw
And more accurate
I have all my fingers!
It depends on the situation, but if it is a few boards, the circ saw is quicker.
Just be sure to cut with the saw in the proper direction, not using it with the short side of the Shoe over the stock.
You’re not a carpenter bro
Do it in half the time with a chop saw 🤦♂️
I have to agree my friend. Faster and more accurate.
Wrong
It depends on how many cuts you need. A couple cuts, circular saw and speed square on a job site is quicker. Framing up several walls, I pull out the miter saw.
I personally choose butter knife
Oops! Missed....
Speed square edge goes on the nearside, dude. ✌🏼
It doesn't matter what side. It's whatever's more comfortable, the size of the square, etc. It's easiest to just make a line and cut without the square
I was taught 20 years ago to make my mark like an arrow, so I know exactly where to make my line. If you need a speed square to guide your worm drive, maybe you should be in the office
You're an idiot.
Thank you . that's how i was taught 20 yrs ago from a framer.
Sometimes the handheld circular saw is the best tool for the job.
Back in my younger days, our safety director explicitly forbade us from making plunge cuts due to the DANGEROUS nature of plunge cutting.
I’m all my life, I have never witnessed any injuries due to plunge cuts, and I always made my plunge cuts regardless of whether he was on site or not.
Sometimes, like many other things that we do…IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE JOB DONE, and in those instances, it is often THE ONLY SAFE WAY to do the job.
They can do a lot...
Both the mitre saw and circular saw are handheld . You haven’t been on site before. The circular saws used aren’t that small.
Cut right off the bunk of studs is faster than a mitre saw. Every time you have to move the stud that takes time and energy. Pick it up to put it on mitre saw then pick it up to put it back down. Pull your tape out once measure everything on the top row of the bunk at once then cut them all. You’ll save more energy for later in the day and you will actually look like a framer 😂😂
Exactly. Use a long stop and you can snap a line on all those studs and cut in one pass.
Or you could do what use professionals do and batch out your cuts on a miter saw with saw stops.
Been using that method for over 10 years. It’s not efficient for walls or a lot of framing, but it’s nice when there is only a few boards.
That's not a mark. That's chicken scratch. 'Hey Tony! Why ya breaking ma ballz fa?' 😂
you always sound like a elementary teacher talking to little kids 😂😂
I’ve got a pretty decent shop at this point but I can remember my stepdad building sheds, remodeling rooms with new doors and closets and all kinds of other stuff with just a skil saw and a hammer and a cheap jigsaw. He never had a table saw or a power miter saw, at least not back then. He did have a small miter box as I recall. I remember when he got a “wonder bar”. He was so excited about how useful it was gonna be.
It’s a simple and fast trick that too many people forget about or don’t think about. Thanks for making the video.
Been doing this since 1968 and I’m only 30 years young. Show this dog some new tricks
Vince gettin' blow back from miter folks. LOL! Both work. But... it depends.
First, props for buying a saw with the blade on the correct side for a right-hander. And I get it this video is for beginners. If you're doing a house, a quick stop block (a long one) will allow you to line up a LOT of 2x, snap a line and you can cut a wall's worth of studs in minutes (Freehand).
Why does it matter? The side of the blade?
@@IWillSmurfYou If you're right-handed, with the blade on the left side of the saw you can see where the blade is relative to the line. If it's on the other side you will tend to bend over the saw a little, and maybe get your leg closer to a potential kickback.
Every framer for decades used a Skil worm drive saw with the blade on the left. Just my opinion.
@@gregorsamsa1364 Ok, but you know what I'm saying... (And I framed awhile ago. I wish we'd had lighter cordless...)
I remember doing stud walls when I didn't own a mitre saw. I had a really sharp good quality handsaw. Look after your tools and they'll serve you well.
I do this as well saves from pulling the miter box out
You need to find the gap between the saw blade and the edge of the circular saw then subtract that from your overall measurement then you can just measure where the to hold the square
I used to that before there were miter saws and stopped because I got a miter saw. Actually, I bought a SawBuck made by Rockwell.
While I agree on jobsite, at home shop I have a chop saw (it’s a dealt dual bevel, who cares, does fancy this and that) that does 90s in rough lumber. That’s it. I hate it, half the time I use a track saw to cut something down because the saw is 15 feet away , and I cannot be bothered to travel such distances. I am not a savage.
Man this guy the dad from Matilda
This is exactly why I love blade-left circular saws. So easy to see the line that way.
Blade left is great for this type of cuts. Now for long cuts you’ll be covered in sawdust in no time
@@ernlic3715 I hear ya! I usually run my circular saw with a vacuum attachment and it works out nicely 😎
I bought the Skil Sidewinder left blade saw. It has the same double wound motor and magnesium housing as the wormgear. It is a beast and left blade.
So simple I'm kinda embarrassed. I didn't think of this
As long as that took to mark and slide the speed square I can do it on the miter saw, that and it's guaranteed square.
Yeah I'm faster and don't need to walk to the table saw.
Measure the distance between the shoe and the blade, remember that number. Subtract that number from your measurement, put your square under the tape measure at ≈89", grip it and rip it
Welcome to Rough Carpentry 101! I’ll be your professor for this class! My name is Gilbert Gottfried!! You can call me professor!
You need to watch Larry Haun framing videos. Square cuts aren’t difficult once you learn technique and cut a few
Or in the case of the saw being right handed you just make a mark 1 1/2” to the left and set the speed square to that.. No nonsense quickest way with that configuration.
Put the saw down if you can't cut straight.
That doesn't make sense.
I picked up wood working tools for the first time this past weekend and used this trick from the get go. No training needed. Just thought it was the simplest way of doing it. But yeah i still want a miter saw lol. They are bad ass looking n sounding. Think the DeWalt 12 inch is on sale 40% off right now
Flip your speed square around, then you’re pushing it tight into the wood as you cu rather than pushing with one hand and pushing with the other.
Another great idea when I do production framing, if I’m cutting a bunch of cripples for instance, take a hammer and tap all the precut ends on the top two rows of wood all even( this only takes a few seconds. Then measure both sides of the bundle chalk a line and cut through the top row and it will score the second row. Tap the next two rows even and cut right down the score line. Repeat.
One off sure but no way to beat a miter saw with a stop block fence, significantly faster and nicer cuts
If a person was going to use that 2x4 in a wall.
I would cut the other end because the cut end now has a serious defect that might affect the holding power of the nails.
Framing is about efficiency, speed, then accuracy. Larry haun taught us that, if you're off by a little bit life goes on. Stack your lumber, flush the ends you're measuring off. Measure the top board and cut it, it'll score the board under it making all the cuts in the stack the same. I can cut 50 studs in maybe 2 minutes like this. Typically you don't use a mitre saw when framing because there is no need for absolute perfection
Thank you for making this simple enough for my caveman brain to understand it lol. I’m new to woodworking and I was way over complicating it.
What’s that black tail thing coming off the back of the saw?
Use the legend Larry Hauns method, square the saw shoe to the lumber.
Revolutionary. Nobody has ever thought of that. Now show us how you do it when you need to use a stop block. 🤔
By the time you find power and an extension cord. You could have cut with a 🙀🙀CC🙀🙀Handsaw.
Outside framing This is good practice for speed. Inside basement or anything else my miter saw has dust collection so it's in the middle of the room.
I was always able to split a pencil line freehanded,..
Do you have a Swanson affiliate link with an Empire speed square in the video? 😂
This is good for when your building one wall or just doing a few studs....but building a house, it's easier to just set a miter saw up have it ready for 91" and saw away.
That's a heavy Yankee accent. Gets me everytime
thanks for the info
I actually taught myself this years ago.
If im doing a small boxing then its not worth using a chopsaw, but doing a whole house with a circ is more time consuming than using a chop saw
Starting to convince people you might actually be a contractor lol
Now cut one 22.5 degrees lol i have done the square method for a long time but then i bought a miter saw and rarely do it
I know this is basic information but still thank you
This guy sounds like the Dom Mazzetti of construction
Been doing this for a very long time.
I think my whole life flashed before my eyes.
I use this technique all the time, cuts are always a perfect 90, can't say the same with a miter saw, and I've owned them all.
Rooky.... put that speed square away and use the marks on the plate of your saw. That's why they're there. I see you doing that on the jobsite while I'm paying you by the hour, you're out of there.
Dude you make pens. Gtfoh
Ok arm chair expert. Stop playing make believe.
When it’s convenient yeah but sometimes it’s more convenient on the chopsaw specially when you’re doing a whole bunch of them
You would be surprised how many people think this is some kind of new trick. I see so many guys who think they are the best freehand ever and the shit is crooked when they cut
just mark and inch and seven back from your original mark, line your square up on the and cut it. almost all worm drives and circ saws at and inch and seven to the outside of your cut
Brooo. You have to be related to TAZ
When I see miter saws in a concrete job and a framing job I just laugh and watch 😂😅
Yes you do...because they got the job and you didn't. So you have nothing else to do but watch.
Wow, that's ingenious
Not getting done very efficiently. Especially when you have about 150 or 200 studs to cut
Share your method I’d like to hear it, if it’s good I’ll illustrate it in a video!
If you need a speed square to line a circular saw mounted on a square base, what are you even doing?
Or you could deduct the distance from the fence and blade so you just put your square to the line and cut
When you set up a stop and need to cut production its much faster. But you should learn addition before using a calculator to be fair
I want the polo Vince. Why can't I buy the polo in the store?
Fine but you have to fight the blade safety spring which can be really annoying
I like this method straight & fast. Many people could learn from this.
People who like to waste time already know this method. Cutting one board at a time.
Kerf loss just left him shy of 91”.
Osha wouldn’t approve of your choice of eye protection based on my recent training video. But honestly I’m not 100% sure, because I couldn’t really see that well. I had on my Oakley extra dark lens frog skins/ safety glasses.
I know that the distance between my saw blade and the guide is 1 1/8”, so I subtract that from my measurement and put the speed square on my mark.
This is like the most common trick in the book. Not sure why it negates a miter saw though? When you’re cutting studs for a whole house - can’t beat a miter saw with a block clamped to it for the proper length
Oh yes you can. You're talking one at a time. You can set a really long stop, put a LOT of 2x up against it, snap a line and cut once with a circular saw. It's really fast. About as fast as describing it. And the more you need to do, the faster it is over a chop saw.
So you need 2 tools instead of just 1 miter saw?
Been doing that for years. It's a no brainer
Awesome. Why didn't I think about that!?!?!
Missed it by THAT much!... it's always the chance you take when you insist YOUR way is THE way to get something done. Have thick skin!
That’s a great idea I hadn’t thought about that thank you!!!
You are so welcome!
Please make such videos more. Thanks
Sure 😊
Right On!
Been doing this for years 😁👍🏻
Make a line and watch the blade! Miter saw has one use cutting horizontally. Circ saws are way more versatile they are the Jack of all trades of saws!
Or you could just know your saw and cut a straight line from your mark ? Minus the extra 47 steps ?
The new shamwow guy, but for cutting lumber. Lol
I never used anything but experience
Nice touch. Little education goes a long way!!!
Nothing wrong with this, but why is it better? Personal experience is the stud likes to try to pivot when the circ saw first hits it and it feels less safe when I dont have someone to hold the stud, but nothing wrong with this, just not seeing it as so superior that using miter saw should be discontinued as the title seems to imply.
Title should be you don't NEED a miter saw. This way works, but a miter saw is faster and easier if you have it. This way has practical use though in situations where you need a quick cut on location and can't or don't want to bring it back to the miter saw.
Thanks for the info 👍
You bet!
Call me crazy but I just draw a line and cut. Works for me like half of the time 😂
🤣
Thanks
