This is the full build video of Giuseppe 'Nino' Farina's F1 World Championship winning Alfa Romeo 158 ' 'Alfetta' in 1/24 by Mister Craft. This kit was originally released by Merit and Smer.
The Alfa Romeo 158/159, also known as the Alfetta (Little Alfa in Italian), is a Grand Prix racing car produced by Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo.
It is one of the most successful racing cars ever produced - the 158 and its derivative, the 159, took 47 wins from 54 Grands Prix entered. It was originally developed for the pre-World War II voiturette formula (1937) and has a 1.5-litre straight-8 supercharged engine.
Following World War II, the car was eligible for the new Formula One introduced in 1947. In the hands of drivers such as Nino Farina, Juan Manuel Fangio and Luigi Fagioli, it dominated the first two seasons of the World Championship of Drivers.

Clarification about the name - 158 is the real name of the car whilst 159 is the updated version used in late 1950 and all of 1951. I got a little confused when making the video! 😅
I see..and Juan Manuel fangio 's the 1951 World champion With Alfa 159
Yeah that's right. The 158 stood for the 1.5 litre straight 8 cylinder engine. The 159 didn't have a straight 9 engine so the name change didn't really make sense.
Alfa 158b would be just fine for a little tiny update 😀
@@sujojojojo6090 that's right! 😅
Love the car Thomas! Great job of taking a basic kit and making it into an interesting model.
Thanks, Rob. Yeah, I probably could have spent more time experimenting with it but I thought I'd get fed up!
Very good Thomas!
Many thanks!
Fabulous build, great descriptions and I liked the “did you know” windows too👏👏👏
Thank you very much! I'm sure you know everything about Formula one in the 50s now!
Beautiful car and beautiful build Thomas!
Thanks a lot Shawn!
Another great build. I tried the same effect you did on the steering wheel for a ditching log on a T62a build. The clear orange or red as I used definitely brings it to life.
Thank you very much! Yeah, I totally agree. I've bought some proper orange clear now as I'm not sure the mix was ideal.
Good job Thomas! I just watched the same video on wood steering wheels just a couple of days ago. Can’t wait to try it.
Cheers. Yeah, I hope to use it again too. I've enjoyed building some classics lately.
Turned out nice, for the age of the kit you did very well. I used Indycals for my Fujimi GT40 as the kit didn't have the New Zealand fern in it, I also have others to use as well, with Indycals the transfer is all one so you have to cut each one out and they are a bit rubbery, they're good from what I've had just different a little bit.
The decal in front of part of the radiator is just for cooling purposes, if the engine is running too cold part of grill is covered.
A fellow modeller has suggested spraying Plastikote over old decals to stop the decals exploding apart, not tried it myself yet, but if you want more advice on it ask Colin at Festa 67 workshop, I'm in that community of modellers there.
For the black tyres I'd have scored the line between tyre and rim to make it slightly deeper then thinned the paint, it'sll take more coats to paint but it'll run in the groove better, never tried wire wheel making I'd have kept the rims with the holes as i quite like that effect :)
Thanks, Sarah Jane. It is a good kit considering the age - in fact the worst bits about it are the decals and instructions which should be replaced! The decals aren't old, just poor quality.
I tried Indycals Rothmans decals for a Williams FW19 I made before the RUclips channel and they were fine. I just didn't want to buy decals for this one which cost more than the kit did! Same with the wheels really. I will try the wiring again sometime maybe but perhaps with nails, not screws.
I'll check out that community some time too!
Nice video and nice build Thomas!! 👍 👌 👍 👌
Cheers Tim! 👍
Awesome looking build Thomas. Rick 🤓✌️
Thanks a lot, Rick! 👍😁
Looking great
Thanks a lot!
Nice vid I've had this sitting around for a while and I remember seeing somone making resin detail parts for this kit but can't find them again.
Many thanks! There are resin parts and replacement decals for sale at Indycals.com - I was very tempted by them but this kit was so cheap I chose not to.
You got a great model out of this kit, specially considering how old it is. I particularly liked the way you salvaged the grille, which seemed very weak molded on the videos.
Thanks Gustavo. It really was poorly moulded - I had to keep the paint off it when adding the red but I didn't want to mask it. You can buy replacements but they are more expensive than the whole kit!
Built the same kit a couple of weeks ago. Had the same amount of flash. Can't remember having had any kit where I needed so much sanding etc. On the other hand this was one of the reasons I took this one. Its cheap and you can sharpen your sanding/carving/filling skills by it. If something goes wrong its not that frustrating. And I learned A LOT.
Sprayed the body with Tamiya X-7 (red) and Tamiya X-9 (brown) (~ 15:1 ratio). Really just a bit of brown. Even a little bit of X-9 darkens X-7 pretty fast. Probably not matching the historic cars but I thought Alfa Romeo always had that brownish-red as their color. In general I did not much research there.
Had the same troubles regarding the decals. I guess the decals tend to break quite easy even with proper wetting and good old MicroSet/MicroSol from Microscale.
Like you I tried (first time) the clear orange technique to achieve a nice wood effect on the wheel. I had Tamiya X-26 (clear orange) at hand (which seems to be more 'clear' than what you had) and I really like the result.
Another thing I tried is a bluing (not sure if this is the right term here) effect on the exhaust. Painted the exhaust complete in silver and then I sprayed the part coming from the engine in different clear tones. Again, I don't know if that matches to the original cars but I wanted to test this effect after having seen it on YT. It went wrong for me (another lessons learned: if two clear colors overlap they will produce a blended color and that is NOT always what you want). Great idea to use aluminium foil for the exhaust!
Regarding the rims: I left out the clear parts. Had no idea how to make it better but I did not like the look of this clear parts at all. So, my Alfetta is driving on 'solid' rims :).
Many thanks. Your reasoning for making it was sort of mine too - also, it's such an old, unique kit and a real part of F1 history.
Exhaust weathering isn't really something I've done yet - I think I'm going to get one of those Tamiya colour sets for weathering.
What a cool build. Love these unique type of cars. You did a great job here. Shame about the decals but your recovery was perfect. Really like. How this all turned out and awesome that it is all one video as well!
Cheers Spencer. I'd be interested in making another similarly aged kit if they are like this. Thanks - I knew the decals were poor so I just kept patient.
@@BOABModels I'm sure you know? there is a Talbot Lagot from Smer / MisterCraft.
Thank you and yes, I do. Although I've seen it on sale from Heller. Maybe one for the future.
@@BOABModels Same car but different kits. The Heller has wire wheels + rubber tyres, but it costs 3 times a MisterCraft.
Oh really? I hadn't realised. I'll have a closer look.
Great work! I consider doing this model as well.
Many thanks, Lukasz. It's like going back in time!
A really nice build of an old kit. It's a shame there aren't more modern kits of vehicles from this era, apart from the insanely expensive MFH kits.
Thanks a lot for watching, mate. Yeah, I totally agree. It's odd that Tamiya have made '60s cars like the Lotus 25 but nothing from the '50s at all!
Well done Thomas, great result for such a basic and old kit. Love your additional little touches! Do you not have an airbrush?
Thanks a lot, Paul. No I don't have an airbrush - I'd like to get one in the future though.
Super bello... ciao dall'Italia
Grazie mille!
Well done Thomas, car looks great. Great safe with the decals, but you didn't clear cote to protect them for the future. I also like what you did with the grill and the wire wheels. Looks very good.
Thank you. I actually did clear coat them but forget to mention it in the video! 😂 I should make notes.
@@BOABModels On the box it says: Super Decal Included. LOL. You made a nice model of that very cheap kit.
Thanks - haha yeah. Super terrible decals more like! 😂
Another awesome build brother👍🏻 You need to add a muscle car to your collection. Try the Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396, I think you’d enjoy it.
Thanks a lot. Yeah, I'd like to do something like that maybe. I built the Revell GT350-H before I started this channel and enjoyed it a lot. I'll keep an eye out for a kit I like.
Looking at what you started with. Then what you finished with is crazy. You took a mediocre model and made a show piece. Nicely Done!!!!
Thanks a lot, Mike. Too kind. I've always said that it's the builder which makes the kit.
Very impressed by how you took what is arguably a pretty poor model and so carefully transformed it into something very presentable.
Thanks very much! I wish there were some contemporary kits based on these early Formula cars.
Great job on a very poor kit. I have one in my stash, which is heading towards my 'to do' list. I wonder if I might ask where you got the instrument & Alfa decals?
Thanks a lot, Mike - it is by far the oldest kit I've ever made and one of the worst.
So the Alfa badges I made myself and printed off - the instruments were in a collection of dial decals I bought from somewhere.
I think Indycals do a full set of decals for this, with different numbers and coloured bands depending on driver or race.
