- In the ultimate battle of power versus aerodynamics, we are pitting our two speediest bikes against each other in a race. In one corner, it’s the Canyon Grail:On, our unrestricted ebike with a massive 85 newton-metres of torque. In the other, our super aero Orbea Ordu TT bike, which took a team of 5 roadies to be beaten! This is time trial bike vs detricticted e-bike: which is fastest?

Did you predict the winner? How many TT bikes do you think it will take to beat the derestricted e-bike?
Every time it's Hank vs anyone, the winner is always Hank the Tank.
one, but with Si on it
One, flying start!
Hank said that E-bikes are great for people like his dad. So, the race I want to see is Hank's dad on an E-bike vs a single TT bike.
With that derestricted ebike's turbo- and 4x4-like blastoff, maybe none. But it's worth the challenge isn't it so I predict three TTs with crucially optimal teamwork. 🚴🚴🚴
I've owned a TT bike for 13 years now and it's scary how quickly I get to speeds I've never been to before without even breaking a sweat.
Of course I'm also getting old enough for an e-bike by now... :D
Next challange: Hank on a unrestricted e-bike vs Phillipo Ganna on a TT bike.
Pippo can hold 500 +watts for the 5 laps.
Literally was just heading down to type this
Yeah he’s probably not busy. Screw the TDF, GCN need you for a vid Pippo.
For some reason, Pippo isn't returning our texts 😉
@@gcn he got mad after Alex defeated him at the rc race.
I weirdly love these comparisons! 😁 The ebike will surely win against 2 TTs as well but I'm ALL for a video about it! :D
Humans will never be as efficient as electric motors
They should do it again but with a rolling start
Now slap a 3000W motor on that ebike. I want them racing against custom ebikes lol
@@drewfeld836Well here's a challenge for ya! An 'entry-level' rider on a derestricted ebike vs a TT Pro athlete!
I'm tipping the TT this time! It's all about the rider and their average power!
Si would have smashed Hank! Nothing against you Alex, but Si is the TT man to go ;-)
Some say he sleeps to the sound of a turbo trainer, and that he communicates exclusively through the names of his rides on Strava. All we know is, he's called the Si
Don't sleep on Alex, 364 watts average is some beast mode stats.
@@thelonesculler For a moment, i misread it as "Stig"
Would love to see if there’s going be a GCN Stig
I think 🤔 they set the TT bike up to fail by not handing it to Si.
What would be interesting to see with (restricted) Ebikes is a comparison of the amount of watts you need to produce to ride it at speeds over that 25 km/h restriction compared to a similar bike without the electric support. (and maybe even do a comparison at 20-25 km/h with the electronics turned off to simulate a dead battery).
As someone that commutes on a bike almost the entire year I've considered adding one mostly for getting to work without having to leave a lot earlier when a strong headwind is forecast.
Restricted ebikes provide 0 watts after 25kph, so it would be the same as riding a normal bike, albeit heavier
I'm really glad you're talking about ebikes. I'm a serious cyclist (I cycled over 4700km in 2021) but I commute to work on an ebike so I don't look like a sweaty mess.
There's a great deal of snobbishness and antagonism in my experience of ebikers. The other day some guy in his fully decked out £4k+ bike (and all the fancy clothes) shoved me for taking him over (or getting too close as he called it, but I wasn't that close), I can only presume he was annoyed by me effortlessly cycling past him.
That guy with all the gear and no idea (or speed) sounds like an utter prong. E bikes and investment in safer roads for cycling commuters is a part of our futures.
what a prick that guy must've been
I have a stigma around e bikes, it just goes against my own enjoyment in cycling, of the independence and self achievement and I wouldn't want to add a motor to the equation.
I just can't bring myself to be comfortable with the idea of owning one, it seems wrong almost, like going against cycling itself. I am changing my perspective, obviously for a lot of people who can't keep up a wattage bazooka it makes sense and I can see the viability for commuting, my only problem is that electric bikes make the speed feel trivial, and I hope it doesn't become a safety issue with people not thinking much going that fast, in some places e bikes are restricted to 30kmph, I feel like I'm flying at just 27kmph, on a public e bike I feel like snoozing at what was probably 25kmph
@@calebgonsalves2970 Mostly I have the same thinking about achievement like you, but then there is the other me that thinks with an gravel eBike I could go on steeper (gravel) roads in the Alps that I otherwise would not include in my routes, especially when I plan >100km trips. And if you are not only looking at the sportive achievements but seeking for enjoying beautiful landscapes than an eBike helps you to make more km and see more landscape with the same effort and in the same time.
@@stefanwagener you make valid points but I just can't fully agree, I can't believe I'm saying this but No pain no gain! It kinda takes the achievement out of training hard for months to do these things and that just doesn't sit right with me, of course it's better you do such stuff on an e bike than never do it, but I dunnoo....
I wonder what would happened if your took away the start advantage of the E Bike and had them both start from a rolling start? Great episode.
Could have made it a closer race
Nah. The E-bike would pull away again and you'd only be getting the TT bike rider more tired.
The US e-bike laws are: Class 1 PAS only 20mph, Class 2 Throttle equipped 20mph, Class 3 PAS only 28mph. (32kph and 41kph respectively) All are limited to 750w.
error in the video: in the United States we have 3 classes in class 3 we can go up to 28 mph, none are only restricted to 20km per hour here, that would be horrible.
Your right, and is the reason I don't buy 'em. Esp at the steel one's cost a fortune and I don't trust Alu.
In Ontario the rule is 32 km/h which is about 20 miles per hour.
@@kibbee890 class 1 and class 2 in usa are 20mph ebikes. Class 3 is the fastest here, that's officially legal in most states.
@@kibbee890 Yeah, mine appears to be limited to 30km/hr or so. Note that's just an artificial limit on how much power the motor will add as you pedal. I can still get to 60 or 70 km/h on descents.
Heh... derestricted an Ariel Rider and clocked 37mph.
I have a Cowboy E bike. Single speed, carbon belt drive. It’s obviously restricted to about 17mph, but I can do that speed everywhere. Into strong headwinds, up quite steep hills. Plus it’s almost silent when in use, which makes for a lovely riding experience.
Over £2k just to go around slowly on a heavy bike? I'll stick with my single speed I got for £100 on ebay
@@whyIsItSoLoud it was £1200 for me. And if I'm going slow, then everyone else around me must be moving at a snail's pace, because I overtake 99% of other cyclists around here.
Just looking forward to the next 2 TT-bike against the E-bike.. will be awesome..
We can't wait to see how far this series goes
Who are you betting on Johan?
@@gcn I go for the e-bike
2:41 ebikes in the US are restricted to 20 mph not kph, so 32 kph
Class 3 ebike in the us can actually do 28mph lol
Yup. Class 2 is 20mph or 32kph.
Class 3 is 28mph or 45kph.
Class 2 is bascally a bicycle by law in 99% of circumstances. Class 3 is basically considered a bike on streets but a mo-ped in most non- street areas (trails, beach paths, etc). This is of course a broad generalization and not a hard rule.
@@mikepagani6996
I do 32 miles an hour on my Juiced bike all-day
@@SirWrecksyI’ve done 40+mph on my single gear but only down hills lol
On flat ground I can get up to 25 than I’m outta gear
It would be interesting to compare lap times. Also if you did a race with a rolling start, or after one lap I think it would be a close race.
If you put a machine (Hank) on a machine (e-bike) , it is no contest. I picked that from the start. Can't wait to see Alex and Ollie take on the Hank in the next installment. Great effort Alex. You will get him next time. Maybe need a pace lap first to eliminate the start time and see how that turns out. Might be closer than you think.
Thanks Steve - rolling start would certainly make it a closer battle!
Watching all you guys with your E bikes restricted from here in Northern Illinois is an interesting perspective.. not many people even ride bikes here so no one bats an eye at my 45mph unrestricted home built e bike lol.
Actually Hank class 3 e-bikes in the US are restricted to 45kph/28mph
Just like the Canyon Grail on you are riding (except mine has electronic Sram) excellent for us heart failure patients ♥️
In the Netherlands we have a pedelec, im sure the rest of the world has them too. But it's basically a bike with a numberplate, which is a allowed to go 45km/h here.
The gearing is so much different between the bikes, put a 53/34 on the canyon at least and that gap will increase. The gravel bike chain rings are generally more like 46’s. Super fun video !
Something for Alex and Ollie to look at over on GCN Tech maybe...?
I think the wet track gave the e-bike a huge advantage. It equalizes the tires in terms of rolling resistance and I don't think it makes cornering with a TT bike easy.
edit: Plus, it looks windy. Not the best condition for deep-section wheels at the front and disc-wheels at the back.
Yes that headwind was awful!
Man those wheels are engineered to fight wind 😂
In wind conditions the tt bike has a big advantage reason why on head wins sections tt bike reduced the gap vs the e bike
@@nemure But if the wind comes in blows from the side, it can be unpleasant.
It's been a year that I subscribe to this channel. I can say that giving a tips is just an amazing.
3:54 crasherino spotted also the fork in front some nice bruises 😅 You are giving it all 👍👍👍
Not enough stats for a great comparison. Ebikes will always be faster off the line. So it would be awesome to see laptime comparisons to see if the TT was faster across one lap than the ebike. Or was the TT started gaining on the ebike each lap. Or did the TT lost time each lap.
Where on earth will these battles end?
“Can 500 De-restricted E-Bikes take on a Tesla?!?!”
Yes, the Tesla wouldn't be able to pass.
@@06racing the Tesla would just run over all of them
@@Starfox2020 Nah those things are made of plastic. It might get through about 20-30 of em but no way it clears the full peloton
@@Starfox2020 Using Teslas autonom driving, i guess. ^^
Also, one thing to note : Hank still has quite some gains to make, since he wasn't even in the drops every time we saw him.
364w .. gosh I can feel the heart attack from here looking at my 248w FTP results today 😜
Game on! 2TT, rolling start, for the win.
The advantage of the start was a bit of a let down. I was imagining a longer race, more about TT bike top speeds and e-bike endurance.
2:55 e-bikes in North America are restricted to 20 MPH or 32 Km/h, not 20 Km/h. Bit of a nitpick detail I know, but a lot of people watch these videos to see if they want an e-bike and that little detail would put off many.
I figured Hank would win. MORE POWERRRR! I may have misheard, but I thought the number quoted for speed restriction in the US was wrong. There is a 20 mph/32 kph restriction for class 1 and 2 ebikes. There is a class 3, which is restricted to 28 mph/45 kph.
Should have been a rolling start though to give a truer comparison
Because bikes never stop?...
Would have certainly been closer. But that start is part of the challenge!!
@@kidShibuya🤣🤣🤣
The day you need an e bike to ride with a group. Find a different group.🤣
Man vs Machine ... Machine always wins in a brute-force battle!
My favorite part Connor yelling "Common your gaining on him! COMMON!"
All that money spent on R & D for the perfect roadie and a recumbent would still kick it's ass.
Indeed!. I ride a Cruzbike e-recumbent mostly around 18-20mph with regular clothes and the motor assists about 50% of the time. My 5yr old battery (now degraded 30% to ~700Wh) gets about 100-110 mile range yet when previously installed on a regular budget bike with same motor got me 50-70 mile range at similar speeds.
How about Ebike vs that wicked recumbent torpedo Manon tested?
I knew it would be th ebike, but was cheering for the TT!! Close finish though, good race!
A more realistic challenge is a standard (restricted) e-bike vs. a TT bike.
Very, very very few riders are going to de-restrict their e-bike,
real people have to buy their bikes, and would pay out of pocket if their de-restricting burned up their e-bike.
This was more of a fun challenge than consumer advice. An e-bike restricted to 25km/h obviously wouldn't stand a chance against a TT bike travelling over 40km/h
Have you seen any delivery riders recently? Quite a challenge to spot a ‘legal’ ebike amongst them!
As much as I respect Alex, that tt bike should have been ridden by Filippo Ganna. 500W will always beat 364W, obviously.
Apparently he wasn't available 🤷
Nice to see Llandow (the home of the unofficial world championships) in a GCN video
Y'all should throw some power meter pedals on the e-bike. I'm curious to know how many watts are pushed on it versus the tt bike.
I recognize those track, didn’t Rory Reid do a review on auto trader, it was a comparison of a Porsche 911 992 GT3 vs a Porsche 911 992 Turbo S? Tiff Needell did a few reviews here on Lovecars I think.
My Class 3 E-bike I bought from a Raleigh dealership here in the Pacific NorthWest of the USA tops out at 28mph. Substantially higher top speed than 20kmh stated. Derestricted, it now keeps going until the gearing allows me to mid-30's mph on the flat. I use it to commute a round trip of 22 miles a day and it gets me to and from work quicker than the bus used to!
Was it too cold for Si then? Si for the win in the summer then!
Next tech challenge...de-restricted tandem e-bike. I can already imagine Hank cringing at that idea 😁😁
Do it with a rolling start with both riders level at the line and then see what happens
Would certainly have made it a closer race....
Very cool race. You guys rock!!!!
Nice to see the track 5 mins from ym house being used
The E-bike should have had bolt on aero bars. An equal start should have been done, and the use of the ride assist should have only been used on windy sections. Two TT bikes should be tried, with the E-bike having bolt on aero bars. The E-bike is made for commuting long distances, so one can be fresh when they arrive at work. All e-bikes should be rated for max 40 kmph to make them good for long commutes. After all, a TT bike can go 40 km, why not e-bikes? I know two guys where I live use Specialized Shiv to ride to work daily. They just fly.
Haven't seen Llandow for years, seeing those solid tyre walls 6 foot from track brings back slightly painful memories, great fun little track though and i would prob be alright with just pedal power!
When it comes to man vs machine in stuff like this, 90% of the times im voting machine.
Fun stuff thanks for these great videos ! What chainring did you have on the Grail ? I have that bike I put a 46t on it (and it works fine) from a 44 and it looked like it could possibly take a 48t and not mess up the chainline too much.
2:49 bikes are allowed to go faster than you think in NA...it varies a lot but generally we are above your 25 km/h threshold, idk why you would group all of NA together and then say such a wrong arbitrary number..
Clearly your next step is derestricted e-tt bike
Loved the video, fantastic job
Thanks Andrew!
Next week an equally silly Suzuki hyubusa v a TT bike.
Wow, just 27 sec difference on 10 miles with not great conditions/result for the TT rider.
Really impressive considering the power of de-restricted E bike.
Aero matters!
How about sharing some more stats? Fastest speed of each bike, lap time comparison for all 5 laps, etc?
rolling start for the
2x TT’s But deeper rims and road tyres for the E bike suit and helmet
That's not about the bikes it is all about the Person who drive a bike.. on how much strong the person are👍
Alex is strong; let's see him take on the hour. Who's faster, Alex or Ollie? (Or Si, or ....)
Great comparison
Considering that this was a 250w Bosch, imagine the time if you had a unlocked 1000w Bafang Ultra equipped e-bike, or any other DIY setup. We haven't even gotten to replacing the motor controller or introducing a battery of higher voltage either. Of course though... Hank would have to wear some motorcycle grade protection in the case he wipes out. Maybe you guys can get Ribble Weldtite on TT bikes against a fully illegal DIY e-bike?
I’m surprised Alex didn’t go faster, watts is quite high and he’s in TT scenario. 30mph/50kph is what I would expect between 10-20 minutes
It was VERY windy
It would also be interesting to see how much the wind slowed them down on that section comparitively. I really thought we might have the metrics for that.
I think this and bikes with similar Bosch drivetrains only delivers 250w of continuous power. The 340% increase is only up to 85Nm and only up to 250w of power. This is separate from the speed limit which is 'derestricted' here. This explains relative modest advantage of this ebike vs tt. You could extract more continuos power from the cheaper and less restrictive Bafang and similar brands.
Was just thinking this, my 750w bafang mid-drive with the limits removed can hit 40+mph like it's nothing, and that's just with max pas and throttle, I'm not brave enough to get it any higher than 3rd gear, my antique of a bike was never meant for that so I'm more than content at my normal 18-20mph,
I'm thinking the next video should be a frankenbike - an E-TT Bike :)
Can you make a video about what color bibs are the fastest!
Has to be Dr Bridgewood as a supporting rider for the two TT Bikes!
The ORBEA ORDU is a hack of incredible beast...
I’m waiting for the E-TT bike
Thank you for sharing this interesting video! ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks
I’d love this canyon grail on - id be flying on the trails
Next will be kayaker vs guy drinking a beer on a bass boat with a 200 horsepower outboard motor.
Whenever I overtake the so called club, professional cyclists on my de-restricted e-bike, you can see the hatred in their eyes, but they are not playing fair either. They're normally 30 years my junior, I'm in my 60s,, and most are wearing lightest and most aerodynamic gear money can buy whilst I am wearing three layers on top, scarf, an old helmet. They ride bikes that don't weigh no more than 20 pounds when mine with the panniers at the back, weigh well over 70 pounds. I find most of the so called "club cyclists" to be too serious. They need to lighten up for after all, most of us cycle for fun and not because we hope to be able to participate in tour de France.
I think people just find excuses to hate on others...also i suspect a lot of jealousy underneath all the criticism.
time for an Euro”E”bike and compete with the aero and TT bikes
On a derestricted ebike, do you run into issues of the motor and/or battery overheating?
I pin the throttle on a 5kw ebike for for 10 miles straight barely warm
It was fun, it if your going to race an bike with an engine, the only video I’m interested in is can Ganna beat a derestricted e bike haha.
Kudos to the TT rider, but you cant beat raw power! 💪
I bet Hank's e-bike wasn't even turned on.
Doesn't need it after all those half squats..? 😂
Ok , it would be intresting to see a superman time trial bike ,
Those with the fully extended grip ,
So we get derestricted tt bike vs deresyricted e bike
Dang that’s an aggressive position on the e-bike, with zero stack.
My prediction is 3 TT bikes will beat a derestricted e-bike. Put Alex, Olie, and Si on the TT vs Hank on e-bike.
"don't do this at home"
While me: having a 71 dollar fixie,
" I wish i could "
Olli Droppedwood? Better call Si… 😉
It would be pretty interesting to know who is faster if hanks ebike would be restricted to the power you need to hold 25kmh and not by speed at all.
Good video but I expected to see Si on the TT bike.
Based on past tests do we really want Ollie to be the 2nd TT rider? 😜 Alex & Si 💪🏼
Video: "I will be sitting on 500 watts of power.."
Me: Glances to the corner where my 2.5 KW bicycle sits.
PS. Its sitting in the corner cause it ripped my frame apart XD
Next compared the 5th bike.vs. A Kawasaki Ninja!
I see a lot of cyclists in the woods near where I live and somehow the ones on e-bikes are a bit more cheerful. :)
Would have wanted to see what the difference would be if you took out the standing start.
Might make it interesting 👀
which TT bike has longest reach for big people?
E bike is wicked;just derestricted mine now!!
Pure speed 👍 distance no. Re charge?
When is TT vs recumbent happening?
A true comparison would be one rider setting times on each bike. Highly unlikely Hank and Alex are at the exact same performance level.
But more fun...
I think it’s better comparing Tt bike vs e mtb hehe
Couldn’t the tt bike be set up in a more aggressive aero set up for such a short race then? He’s up pretty high. Also I think I saw hint coming out of aero on the turns?
If you increase the distance, at some point the e-bike will need to conserve battery and the edge will go to the time trial bike.
Ebike vs a velomobile and or recumbent next?
