Chinese copy Ibanez Universe

- Yo!! What's up, dudes?!?! So I started to make this video at 10pm and it's now 2:10am. Between trying to shoot it and then having to transcode the entire video into Premiere and then output the file to disk, this has been four hours in the making. I notice that it's looking a little dark, and the voice level seems to be lower than the guitar (again!). I have the mic preamp cranked, and the audio sounded fine in the headphones, so whatever the issue is it's been a chore to figure it out. Anyway, the honeymoon may be over with this new cam. I need something with a remote and that can remember all the settings so I don't have to run down a big check list every time I shoot a video. And the need to import into an editor just to stitch the files together is getting tiresome. I think I'm back in the hunt for a camera....that Blackmagic Cinema Cam is calling my name!
Anyway, this is my old Chibanez Universe. I've had this guitar almost three years. I just replaced the trem with a Floyd Rose Special. A big improvement, for sure, but it won't be fully dialed in until I get the new nut installed (which means filing the shelf down) and maybe putting in a set of Blackouts.
Rock on!!

I hate winter. The people here have no clue how to drive in snow. It's a frigging nightmare.
hate that, but hate showering in the morning more
does it ch-djent?
Bad Motivator 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🍻
Bad Motivator lmao maybe
You tell the best stories. Whether it's just you or with your on camera buddies. I just like your story telling. Especially from the old days. I remember the bands, gear and what not from 70's and 80's.
lol I rarely find another person who hate the summer, but we are kindred spirits. My ex-wife was one of those pool lovers who worshiped the sun and I would avoid it like a plague rat. If it were up to her, it'd be 100 deg year round. Me? I would be at home in Alaska (the cold nothern part) I can always add a lyer if I am cold. You can only get so naked.
I hate the summer too! I live in the UK and summers here are a pain in the arse and most people use it as an excuse to act like dicks.I fucking hate summer fashions:I loathe flip flops and shorts.I am also strawberry blonde and thus fair skinned and all I do is burn.. apparently Steve Clarke also hated the sunshine...
Yeah, that's pretty much what resigned myself to for the summer. The good news is that it rained the last two mornings, so there was no swim practice. We all slept late and then hit the 50's Diner for breakfast. THAT'S the summer I like. lol
Thanks! I've always said it's the player and not the guitar. I don't play any better on my $1500 guitars than on my $200 guitars. Funny how that works...lol.
the reason i love a 7 string is bc once you get the names of the notes down on the low b and you're used to it being there you can treat it like a 6 string and add that extra fat bass sound when you feel like it
Glenn Yeahh yes, all 7 strings have a built in 6 string.
Yeah, I mentioned that in the description. It was just too late to try and cut another video. When I listened back it sounded good, but I definitely agree that it's way off in the final output. I probably need a different camera, one that has a remote.
come live with me...it's freezing cold, rain for weeks and huge fogs every morning....hell it wasn't that long back you were snowed in, that axial tilt of the planet causes havoc
chibanese LOL, but sounds great
Thanks! I think it could sound a little better with some nice new Duncan pickups, maybe a set of Blackouts or Invaders. But overall, I'm pretty happy with it (especially for the price).
Chibanez hhaa lol i like that
I have played for 30 years and bought my 1st seven string a year ago and I had heard all these stories of how different they are and maybe its just me but I didnt skip a beat and love it.
I can play all the regular six string stuff as I always did and then bang some heavy shit with the lower register all on the same guitar.
Six strings now seem limited to me. Still awesome, but I notice their limits compared to my seven strings.
I think it's mostly in people's heads. I went from a six string to an eight and same as you, I didn't skip a beat. In fact, some things became easier to play and it just felt really good. I'm currently back onto a six (a tele) and I love it, but that guitar I gotta fight a bit at times.
Yeah, I'm pretty much the same. In order of preference: Spring (it's drier than fall), autumn, winter, summer. I love a cracklin' fire in the winter. We've been super muggy for the last 8 days and it's looking like it's going to remain that way for at least another two weeks.
HA! We are total opposites with regard to seasons. But we can agree on one thing: KISS rules!! lol
i agree winter is better than summer, nothing better than waking up in the morning and looking out your window to a fresh snowfall. makes me feel like a kid again for some reason.
Sounds like it needs a proper ground on it.
One of my guitars buzzed and would stop when any of the hardware was touched. Found a loose ground wire, soldered that to a ground pint and solved the problem.
Tradetang, AliExpress, DHGate...any of those sites are ok. But be warned, you have to find a dealer with really good feedback and LOTS of guitars sold or you're taking a big risk. They're worth it, without a doubt, but they often need a setup and new hardware. Spend $300 on the guitar and $200 in hardware and you'll have a pretty decent guitar, without a doubt. The last one I bought was over 18 months ago, so the guy I used is long gone. You'll just have to scope it out and take a chance.
I wish this guy had a TV show
Yeah, they scallop the JEM copies, but not these. Not that it matters, though, I never got the purpose of only scalloping the top four frets. The big advantage to scalloping is really from the 15th fret and below.
I just bought my first 7 string.
Definitely some rethinking but after a day I started diggin it big time.
I look at it as a continuation of notes in the key and scale which creates new ideas in the low end.
Never mind distortion, cleans with the 7th string reveal amazing voicing alternatives.
Having said that, I have many 6 string guitars that need love...lol
So do I. In fact, I'm looking into another camera with a remote control. The cheapest Canon with an infrared remote is 4x the cost of this one. There is one that's around 2x the cost and uses iPhone for the remote via wifi. That may be my best choice (assuming it works).
Great question!! I'd have to say the '80 Ibanez Artist, simply because that would be the hardest one to replace.
it's the pick ups, it's the buzz from the gain, when u have it up past five or six, you will have that, if you want it to stop you can buy a noise compressor (pedal) and it should stop the buzz, hope this helped
That's pretty much my feeling on it too. I'm not a big fan of the 7-strings, but it's nice to have one just to bang around when the mood hits.
the jb and jazz is an amazing set, you will enjoy them.
Awesome i hate winter i want summer time rock on man cheers
I had a fast loader Floyd.. not a chinese one but a licensed Floyd and it was great.. I loved it... stayed in tune, dive bombed a lot (this was during my 80's glam phase).
So you used to play play guitar and now you play country?
country? who you responding to? If me, No I don't playcountry guitar. I just don't go nuts on the whole dive bombing thing. I actually prefer a set bridge now. I've really gotten into the Les Paul styled guitars. I still have a few Ibanez Rg's, but I don't use the trem at all. Matter of fact I don't even lock in the nut. But I still play hard rock, metal, blues etc....
Hate summers in Boston? Just be glad you don't live like me in Florida. Winters are blissful here, but summers are like the surface of the sun.
The use that Korn did of the 7 string was musically inteligent, and you can tell that even if you don't like them!
The end shot with the pickguard reflection of 'yet more guitars' was cool. A chap can't have too many guitars. The JB/Jazz set by Seymour Duncan are very good indeed, I have them in an epiphone les paul and it made it awesome. Rock on man !
I am living the summer right now in south america and i also hate it. I'm with you on that one
HA!! Thanks for the kind words. I'm already plotting my next Pinewood Derby. This year I'll get some ultrafine sanding blocks to polish the axles. It's all in the axles!!
Yeah, the dew point today was 74. 7 f'n 4!!! That's more humid than Boca Raton or Liberia, Costa Rica. It's literally drier in the f'n rain forest than Boston. lol I'm not noticing the lag, but I think I'm going to get a different camera. I really miss the remote and having to transcode all the videos adds hours of extra work per video. I'm hopefully going to fix those two issues with the next cam. The picture and audio definitely crushes the old cam, but some annoying issues remain.
Thanks!! I was a little leery of getting a 7-string, but they are fun to mess around on once in a while. Every collection needs at least one.
Yes sir. What is my best course of action? It is definitely not the amp because the amp doesn't buzz with other guitars. I also forgot to mention that the buzzing stops been I press anything metal/steel on the guitar.
That thing seems to be pretty solid for being a counterfeit.
I hear that, and I wish I could keep in the practice of buying and never selling. But 12 years ago I had a near death experience on the job, and have not been able to work since. It has made life very tough on me. I have been seeking extra income but never seem to find any. So when I got married 3 weeks ago i pawned all the guitars to help pay for the wedding.
Thanks!! I don't know too many Vito riffs, but his tapping work was awesome. I'd have to check it out and see what I can pull off.
You’re a winter guy..wow. I needed to hear that cause I hate winter
Yeah, I noticed that too, but it was just too late to try and cut another video. I'm still working with the camera, but I may have to just give up on this one and spend a few bucks on a better model (one with a remote!!).
when they came up with the five string bass, that was the slippery slope to all this foolishness
Thanks! It's a lot better with the new trem.
I couldn't sell it even if I wanted to. Selling these copies in the US is strictly forbidden. But I like it, anyway, so selling it hasn't really crossed my mind.
Hi Steve, try loading the strings the other way with the balls on the top. Then you don't have to cut anything and I have found it works well. I had a guy bring me his guitar for set up and we tried it and it worked well. Just a thought.
Looks cool and sounds great and another added to the collection.
Nothing wrong with that.
You want muggy, come visit use in Georgia! 90+ degrees with 90+ percent humidity! I love it!
Love your sense of humour. It's a nice change.
I think the tone sounds great. What are you using for an amp for this video?
Yeah, I'm really looking forward to checking them out. They should pair well with the Custom Stack in the middle.
They have a mirror top Ibanez Jem on the Aliexppress site. Really tempted to pick it up. I love the mirror top but never could afford a real Jem.
where do you get your Chinese copies? Love your tones!
27 in a collection?! Thank you for making me feel better with my GAS!!! Up to 9 now so I've got some work to do. :)
Thanks! I think adding a set of Blackouts will be the final touch.
we got nothing but time. your videos are lengthy enough not to riot. this video got me wanting a 7 string string again. once again thanks for posting
Hmmm...and it doesn't buzz with other guitars (i.e, you've ruled out the amp)? Then I'm with BMS on this one, it sounds like the pickups. Or it might just need some extra shielding in the electronics cavity.
For a guitar collection the right number is "just one more".
TIP- You don't have to "cut the ball ends off" just thread the string through the tuners!
The down tuned Children of the grave sounded f-ing awesum!
Yo! Steve!! Where did you get THIS guitar??? I love it! Never seen it before. That 7 string sounds difficult to play! But you've mastered it beautifully! It is very dark, crisp and rich! Your playing brings out the best in your guitars. Your technique is real good and I love watching you play. Now quit buying guitars!! 28?? I have 4 and thats it! (laughs!) great video and awesome playing! See you soon!!
Thanks! Ibanez is neck and neck with Fender as my favorite brand. It's probably because my first nice guitar was an Ibanez Les Paul and my second was a Fender Strat.
don't lower the shelf. just mill off some material from the bottom of the nut.
sandpaper and a flat surface and you're golden.
keep rockin'
cheers
7 string is easy if you think about it in the context of scale patterns within the standard B to e tuning cause it starts with b and e string and ends with a b and e string the patterns just repeat themselves
I'm totally with you on Muggy summers..HATE with a passion..But winter sucks too.Autumn and spring are my favourite flavors.
HA! Never stop! The one with the most guitars wins!! lol
Nice man idk how you get these sick Chinese guitars but man do they sound good.
yeah watching your videos make me wonder what would china guitars sound in 5 years..Bdw thanks for playing awsome it only make me practice more!!
Hey how you doin. Lovin the chibanez universe and would love to pick one up for myself or just some sort of chibanez to work on. Just have a few questions though 1- Is this a seven string like the real universe and 2-How much would one of these set me back?
I really enjoy your video's man. Your always honest about the guitar, regardless of what it is!
Thanks! I'm trying to get back to more frequent postings, but time has been at a premium.
Cool 7-string! Awesome sounding too. I think I want one. Not sure if I could handle the huge neck though. Maybe restring a 6string with heavy gauge strings and tune to B-tuning instead? For the occasional djenting. BTW I hate muggy weather too. Good thing I live in Sweden lol. Cheers!
That was an awesome series. 3 OT games. When both teams are playing that well you really hate to see either team lose.
It's a Simpsons trivia game. No one will play with me because I crush everyone with my early Simpsons knowledge (it's based on shows from the first 8 years). My wife was testing me and I nailed every answer. That put it on a shelf really quickly. I have some rare Simpsons posters and original artwork, too, that I've picked up over the years.
Chibanez Chewniverse delivering the chewy tones!
Megadeth - Chris plays mostly 7s. So does Dream Theatre. man there's tons of folks. Yes it's limited to a point. But it's still cool. I bought the $399.00 Ibanez 7 (real one), doesn't have a floyd, fixed bridge with string thru body. Just needs better pickups on it. The factory ones are poop. Gonna get Bareknuckles for it. Good video bro. Heard about you from my friend in Cali.
Oooh, that's a great question. I didn't even realize I was closing in on 100. I'll have to give it some thought.
Thanks for the upload, Steve. I was starting to get the shakes because of wait for your latest video :) Keep well, man. P.S. Pinewood derby, dude!
What pickup in bridge? Thing sounds great, musical and powerful.
I was pretty much in the same boat. I was interested in the 7-string, but I couldn't justify dropping any serious cash on it because it seemed like they just weren't for me. I'm glad I didn't, because I found out really quickly that going from 6 strings to 7 strings was harder than it looked. Besides, the 7-string fad seemed to be over as quickly as it started.
I definitely think there are major differences in certain guitars. If I were you I'd get something very different from the LP, just to have a more rounded set of tones available. Maybe a Tele or a Strat, or maybe an Ibanez with active pickups. That's the point of a collection, having lots of tones and styles available when the mood strikes.
that sounds so evil when you played the sabbath riff,i love it. those pickups sound really decent for a chibenez ,nice score for around 2 bills!!
I've tried it, but I wind up cutting the ball ends off anyway. Old habits die hard, lol. Steve Marchena lets the strings float free at the headstock, but I'm religious about clean cut tuning pegs. I've tried the quarter rolling trick, but even that gets a little tiresome.
Sounds killer! Which site did you get this from?
NIce tone, what amp/effects are you using?
I'm an Ibanez player, and I had no idea this type of model existed haha.
Cool to see a closer look at this guitar. The guitarist that got me into playing guitar, Akira Yamaoka, seems to use this one sometimes. Though I don't know why since his music doesn't seem to require 7 strings. It definitely has a cool look to it.
Hey man I love your videos and I'm about to start playing guitar again and was wondering if you could so another short video with some lick lessons.
You ever buy anything from rareelitric guitars I want a esp mx but not sure about them any info would be great
It's great to help someone out about guitars but ALWAYS played both guitars and see what feels and sounds best to YOU. Only you have your ears.
I've wanted to try the "Whammy" style pitch shifters, but I think there's one built into at least one of the software packages. I just need to get a midi expression pedal to work the control.
Dude, I want an Iceman really badly. It's such an awesome guitar by Ibanez. I like the Paul Stanley ones, the PS-10 and those models. Those models had nice upgrades like an ebony fingerboard, block inlays with abalone striping and pearloid tuners. I'm chilling right now in the basement. Got the central air running with an extra dehumidifier. It's like soup out there today. Ugh!!
man i was wondering when you'd pop up. thanks for the upload
Easiest way to set string a floyd rose, I have found, is to install the strings upside down, put the ball end on the machine head side, and the string end into the Floyd.
This works only for the unwound strings as the wound ones have their end part(the point where they are inserted into the machine head) bare, with no winding.
Michael Goudis The ends on the wound strings certainly aren´t bare on the Ernie Balls I use. Windings all the way to the end, baby!
Guitarrman i just got a packet of these that are unwound :P
Either way you have to cut off some excess string so why not cut of the ball end and and have your guitar not look like a amateur stringed it?
I personally like to leave the ball end at the tuner because I can be sure the string won´t slip and it makes winding the strings around the tuners so much easier
I actually think Steve mentions having trouble jumping between the 6 and 7 string in the premiere guitar rig run down video.
Hello Friend! please tell me where you ordered the guitar from? And what is her approximate weight? I want to order a guitar for myself and make modifications. I bet it will be tough.
Yeah, there's a whole bunch of guys that have that low chugga sound. It's definitely a distinct tone, for sure.
I have the Ibanetz RGA 7 active and I love it.Conect it with DigiTec MetalMaster,Line 6 Version 2.0 and Boss Chorus Ensemble CE-5. It\s souds great together .Allmoast forgot....the speeker is a Fender Frontman 212 R
It's a decent guitar with the new trem, for sure.
2:10 I wish they didn't go out of business. That was my favorite store when they were around.
I thought about the 6-string, too, but it was just easier to buy this one for short cash. The humidity will break by mid-September, but it will be a hot mess until then. lol
I'm the exact opposite. I started playing 7 string really early and now whenever I pick up a 6 string I can't play it. I have no idea what to do with it. My favorite chords can only be played with that low B string and it would be a pain to down tune a 6 string. I can play a 6 string to play cover songs, but when writing my own material I need my 7.
Thanks!! I'll definitely check that out. Sounds cool!
