    I used to program Rock Band games in Reaper. We used all MIDI to program songs. After years of 60hrs a week on it I stuck with it and it's my DAW of choice for audio production to this day.

    I can't belive how useful this video is. This is the 4th time I watch this (the 4th time I install Reaper on a computer). I've written all this info anyway on a notepad, but it's always good to comeback and make sure I'm changing all the preferences and actions just like you guys do. Makes all the perfect sense to me, that I'm coming from Cubase.
    Thanks guys, great job

    Reaper owns on so many levels its unreal. Every time I'm forced to use another daw at someone else's studio Im simply blown away by how complicated and rigid they all are. Hell, the actions menu alone is worth the price of entry... A searchable database of everything the program is capable of doing, plus an integrated shortcut and macro manager? Jesus' tits... Why the fuck don't other daws do this? Scratch that. Keep reaper singular and it will continue to be a singular daw. The devs know what they're doing. Soooo looking forward to the next version change.

    Oh hell yeah. Glad to see Reaper finally getting some love. Something Reaper has that other DAWs don't have (they might now though idk) is the snap to scale feature in the MIDI editor. It makes writing music so fast it's nuts.

    You guys are LEGENDS! I've made up my mind to move to reaper from S1 and use it for all my production and engineering work. Been demoing it for the past 2 weeks now, all i can say is that "I'm blown away". Thank you so much for this video, you just solved all my problems!!!

    Thank you to you and Jon for recording this and posting it. I'm finding that the important thing with Reaper is to just start using it and *then* learn how to customize it after you have some tracks started. This video is great because, although I won't choose the same settings as you, I'm learning HOW to change the settings to what works for me.

    I always liked the meter section of Reaper because it lets you choose between RMS and Peak metering, or showing both at the same time. Most of the time I only use the RMS metering because I found it a bit more helpful for keeping an eye on the loudness of a mix and it was more like getting levels off a console. It also makes getting levels during recording a bit simpler, set the level on the pre so that the hottest signal (lets say a hard snare hit) reads 0 dB on the meter like you would on a tape machine or a console. Same with mixing, the mix should be somewhere between -1 dB and 0.5 dB on the RMS meter, generally the peaks will be around -18 to -14 dBFS and the intergrated loudness will be -25 to -20 LUFS

    Thanks for posting this!! I remember when I bought my first DAW. I picked up reaper for like $40. It just sat there for two years. The learning curve was pretty big. I started on protools so I figured, If I can figure PT out, I can learn anything lol. I forced myself to learn reaper. Now it's my go to. One really cool thing about reaper is its scripts. Not sure if other DAWs do similar stuff. But a script is like a plugin. I found a script that basically does what basic vocalign does and more. Set it to control alt A.

    I made my full change over to Reaper maybe a year ago. I bounced through a number of DAW's and Reaper just made since....fully customizable and no vst issues....it just simplified everything and I love the software. I had to do all the video lessons but after getting involved with it hands on it was almost as if I knew how to use the program bc it was similar yet easier .it's a total mind blower that this software is so cheap and so awesome. The price had me questioning things but I'd be willing to say Reaper is the best DAW I have ever used hands down!

      Orion Benjamin I’ve been using and enjoying Mixcraft 8 for a little while, but now that Reaper supports ARA with Melodyne... I don’t know what to do... I like the visual aspect of Reaper, using software that you enjoy visually is a part of the enjoyment process, is it?

    This was a much needed video. I’m looking into picking up Console 1 and was considering switching from Logic to a DAW that fully supported Console 1, and reaper being the most affordable option. Everything felt way different on day 1 of the demo, but this video really helps. Thanks!

    I always thought Reaper was way more beginner friendly than pro tools. I went to school for sound engineering and had to use pro tools and always hated it for it's odd layout and over complicated menus. I've only ever had to watch two videos on reaper to understand how to use the daw. It's hard for me to relate to these two and hard for me to understand why they've had so many problems with it. Produced tons of demos and songs on reaper and always got my projects done faster than if I was in pro tools or logic

    • @dcp10200
      @dcp10200 5 лет назад +2

      Same, for me I could never wrap my head around Cubase (apparently most Cubase users can't understand Reaper) but Reaper and Pro Tools I found quite user friendly, especially with the Playlist style editing systems in both DAWs.

      Reaper is actually more modern so alot of people r use to thr over complicated approach and find Reaper confusing when they realize how simple everything can be.

      It's so easy to start, but you can never finish making it even better. I try to spend at least an hour every couple of days just refining things in the workflow. It's the gift that keeps on giving forever. Every minute invested in automating or learning a more efficient way to do something earns you 20 hours over the next year!

    -3.0 Pan Law with gain compensation makes it so it's more or less equal power left & right as well as while creating folders doesn't dip down the gain of the tracks you're making the folder for. Great video guys!

    This is what really separates Reaper is guys like Jon and Kenny of ReaperMania make learning and using this daw a breeze and once you get into ur workflow theres really nothing that compares to Reapers overall versatility and power.

  • @camelCased
    @camelCased 5 лет назад

    Thanks for the awesome video, it will help tremendously.
    I wish Reaper had built-in configuration presets for different popular workflows, especially for people who come from other DAWs or who prefer to work more with mouse than keyboard.
    Reaper is very powerful, but also it doesn't hold your hand and filter options based on context and don't force specific workflow on you. For beginners, it can be a problem when menus and dialogs are crowded with so many options and are not filtered by context. You can link almost anything to anything and there is much higher chance to shoot yourself in a foot. But when you find your best workflow and stick to it, Reaper can be much more powerful and flexible than any other DAW out there.

    Best thing to do is learn the shortcuts. That way you dont have to deal with setting up the daw if by any chance you need to reinstall it. Learn the Daw...isnt that hard. The default settings you will find they are actually better than other daws.

    22:23 the question about getting the cursor in the arrange window is all addressed in Kenny Gioia's excellent coverage of all the options you can ascribe to right drag, middle click, and middle drag. It includes the cursor and about 25 other things you can have it do with different modifiers. I think this is one of the most overlooked but most important in Kenny's amazing series. Anyone using REAPER that hasn't taken the time to go through his "WATCH THESE FIRST!!!!" playlist is wasting a lot of time fumbling around with things that will blow your mind when you see how easy it is. I wouldn't consider reaper to be not beginner friendly.
    The first screen you see is so uncluttered compared to other daws and everything is so neat and easy to read. Basically every default behaviour was completely obvious to me.
    All the fancy difficult stuff is buried within neatly organised menus.

    If you scroll over the tracks on the left of the screen, then you scroll up and down through the tracks. It just depends where the mouse cursor is at the time. if you press CTRL at the same time, then you can expand or contract the tracks. The first 5 mins of this video where you're changing settings is completely unnecesary.
