as an update to this, I recently purchased this bike and they addressed the gearing with a larger front that is in your garage and you can take it sprocket and smaller rear one. if you have an older one, the store told me they would replace it for free with a higher gearing.
No throttle for a good reason: a 750w/20mph pedal assist bike is in Federal class one, add a throttle and it becomes class two. Take the throttle away but up the max speed to 28mph, and it’s in class three. A number of states regulate e-bike legality by the Federal class one specs. A big market to sell to. Plus a lot of older riders don’t want a motorcycle-esque throttle or worry about shifting wrong. They just want a helping hand on the hills. But they don’t want to go scary fast. IMHO that’s another huge market for class one bikes.
I do agree with this review though, that with a big heavy e-cargo bike, having a throttle is really nice for getting going and any short steep hills. That quick burst of power also can make the bike a bit safer and get your out of a sketchy situation quickly.
I have this bike. I really like it! It is very comfortable and versatile. I use it to commute to work when I don't want to drive(most days) and the trek is about 2.5 miles and covers both rough dirt trails and city roads. It does well on both. There is a very steep dirt, bumpy hill on a park bike trail and this bike handles it like a champ. If you are going to get this, you could add some fenders to help with rain. I have not had any issues with the front chainring but I'm not interested in going over 20mph but you could totally switch it out. BTW-Good review, very helpful info about the bike.
For 20 inch wheels, a 42 tooth chainring is better for climbing and pulling loads. A 52 tooth chainring would be ideal for flat roads. That bike could have been designed to use a 2x crank.
I love this bike, I just test road it today since I'm in the market for and electric bike.. I'm 5'10 and we adjusted the seat and I was very comfortable. I didn't buy it yet because I needed to come home ad look up details. It is on sale for a few more days saving $300, so I'm pretty sure I'm calling the store bake to ring it up.
I own this bike and like it very much. However, a replacement battery is nowhere to be found. No REIs carry it, and no information on its availability. I even contacted the manufacturer Bafang and they don't have it.
Love the channel, lots of great content. Could you please include a tall, common and universal object, like a traffic cone, something to get a sense of scale of the ebikes featured? Some bikes look small on the screen, but are a lot bigger irl, and something common to compare to would help. Thanks in advance!
Bit late to your video, but was wondering if you happened to get test the E1.2, or have any thoughts? It sounds nearly the same, just a little bigger on the battery and a front rack. Either way, nice review. Appreciated.
Wrong... Test drove it and it does in fact use a torque sensor! Bought it after testing for this reason! What a steal for a bike with a torque sensor. You can also change the assist levels between 3, 5, or 9 levels. 9 is awesome to dial in just what you want.
350w just seems too weak, I had a 350w ebike and it struggled on steep hills and I am only 150 lbs. It was a different brans, an Izip, I think a 2014 model, so perhaps they rate the motors differently. Otherwise very cool looking bike and REI in general makes good gear that lasts so this probably will too.
To turn the lights on (front and rear), power the bike on using the control panel, then press and hold the + button until the lights come on (about 3 seconds). Press and hold the + button again to turn the lights off.ycles Generation e1.1 Electric Bike
What's the point in reporting test results when the testing wasn't controlled or systematic. The rider testing the brakes was nearly twice the size of the rider that did the range test. If you're doing to switch testing variables, you have to repeat the tests and report the results of each size rider. Otherwise, we're left to guess what other real world results are possible.
I find the ebike reviews on this channel below average. I'd like to see more systematic testing and could be better thought out. The ebike reviews often seem "fan boy frivolous" at times, because the information seems more geared toward marketing being that the reviews are missing so many opportunities to deliver useful information.

ong tho send me a free bike
For a cargo e-bike is a shame that it doesn't have the torque sensor.
Cargo ebikes should be front and rear.
@@jergoz this bike does use a torque sensor!! It’s integrated into the bottom bracket
Does anyone know what the REI Coop E Gen 1.1 seatpost size is? I want to buy a suspension seatpost, but dont know what size to buy?!

Thanks for the feedback!
REI updated these bikes to come with a 48T chainring and they also claim to be offering a free swap for existing owners.
If so, that is awesome!
Correct! I just bought one from my local REI yesterday, and they had just done the cassette and chainring swap the day before!

The 1.1 is on sale right now for $798. I bought the 1.2 yesterday for $998!! That's $900 OFF the 1.2 version also!!
@@cferg8575 I brought the 1.1 blue one 3 days ago . Mine should be ready for pick up at my local REI store in 3 days.

What price did they have them listed for when you saw? If you didnt pull trigger they are $798 at REI at bike sale currently

Would enjoy seeing you review the REI Co-op mid drive ebikes.
Hoping to get that one in soon :)
@@ElectricBikeReport It sure seems like REI Co-op bikes are a great value and it’s awesome they have great customer support and tons of locations.

Can build your own batteries now cheaply
Are there any channels out there that actually test the rated torque? I’d love to see how this against other motors on the market.

Any long-term reports? How’s do in different weather conditions? Fenders available?

REI just sent me an email starting that they're offering a free drivetrain upgrade starting April 15th.
did you take the free drivetrain upgrade?
@@eros11746 I upgraded it before that offer.
Can a thumb throttle be added to this bike? I think that might be preferable to trying to diddle with buttons in traffic.
They’re marked down to under $900 here in Charlotte
What’s the seatpost diameter?
Does it use a cadence sensor or a torque sensor for the pedal assist engagement?
Cadence

Is the battery certified?
very utilitous indeed
Agreed!

What rear child mount seat is compatible with this e-bike?
It's standardized
What kind bike fender fit on those bikes?
I cant find what brand battery it uses, anyone know?
It's a Bafang battery

"Passenger assist level?" I get it tho, its cool. Hate the frame design, motor, battery, display etc
Oops! Not a style for everybody, but we are fans of this style and hope to see more like it.
What makes this a cargo bike? The usable part of the rack is small with a small weight capacity. My non-cargo ebike has better
Its wheelbase is too short, no front rack and the rear rack accomodates only 50lbs. This is not a cargo bike.
Can you remove the speed limiter?
