Great interview. I still have my collection of Drums and Percussion magazine (UK) from 1974/5. The second one in May 1974 featured a fascinating interview with Dave where he detailed his kits and tuning techniques amongst other things. Valuable information for me as a rookie drummer. Got me listening to Fairport too.

Thank you for this! Mr. Mattacks first caught my ear with In Real Time '86 by Fairport Convention. What a deep groove!

I'm not sure what I like more, Dave's drumming or his sense of humor. 😊Great interview with one of my favorites. A true song drummer

Dave certainly has the discipline to listen for the appropriate type of groove for that particular song, whatever that is. This opened my ears to a different way of applying bits to any tempo. If I played piano, it could be helpful for me, too!

I met Dave once - he was recording at CTS (De Lane Lea) studios in Wembley - I was hoping to have lessons with him but alas he was much too busy. A gentleman and a scholar. I also invested in a Ludwig Black Beauty snare following his rave review in Modern Drummer magazine - I still have it today about 45 years later . . .

My Mum & Dad were both into Fairport, Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, Maddi Prior,
Joni Mitchell etc, They would take me to various Theatres & Pubs to see Dave Mattacks
perform, My Favorite Thompson track was "Night Comes In" Both Live & Studio versions.
I was 13 when I got into Dave Mattacks, I also have his autograph. Thanks Dave.

His drums on Space Hymn by Sutherland Bros is sublime. 5-note snare fill into 2nd verse is beautiful.
Also his drums on Bryter Layter is absolutely phenomenal. Perfect for Nick’s music on that record.
