    Brilliant video. There are a huge number of assumptions made by guys who obviously know their stuff, the assumptions being that everyone else knows all the tech stuff :-) To literally go through every step of the process, explaining everything as you go, is a rarity. This was a whole new experience for me, and this video helped make it a lot less painful.

    People have already commented but I will because I gotta. Great video. Informative. BUT! Confusing regarding setting up Raspbian on one sd card and then setting up Retropie on another. I'm sure someone is going to take that sd card with Raspbian (Raspberry OS) and flash Retropie over it thinking they're getting both on one card. For just setting up Retropie you DO NOT need to flash Raspberry OS on your sd card first. Also, if you want a pre-made Retropie image from Arcade Punks you only need that image download to flash (etch) to your card. Retropie is already included with many of those very polished and well designed images.

    • @Brian-ui1bq
      @Brian-ui1bq 3 года назад +3

      Thank you for this comment. I was wondering that too. It didn't really make sense to have Pi OS and Retro, at least in my case since they are both their own OS. Also I was confused as to why he wanted a separate SD card to transfer roms. Couldn't you just pop the micro SD into your PC and install them that way?

    • @giantnoggin9512

      So can you clear it up for me. My unit came with a 32gb card that already had Respberry Pi OS on it. When I download Retropie I wasnt to use a different sd card? And what size should that care be? And than do I need a completely different sd card for any games I want to download?

    Just wanted to say thanks so much for putting this great video out. I've been wanting to get some kind of retrogaming console together for a while, but didn't really know where to start... I thought about getting one of the miniconsoles and hacking it, or buying an old PC and using that, but when I saw this video I was hooked. Super informative, entertaining and thorough.

    I just wanted to point something out. 🙂 Cartridge based games are referred to as roms. (ROM = read only memory)
    Optical disc based games CDs DVDs, Blu rays, as commonly referred to as ISOs, not roms a ISO is a optical piece of media IE not a cartridge.
    Have a good day 🙂
    Also the video is very helpful and well thought out.

    • @Wescoast420
      @Wescoast420 2 года назад

      Might be $300 still, but even though its still that high, you get every gaming sysytem known to man and just about every game. While with the Switch you only get Nintendo games, oh and if you want to pay for the subscription, you could get the older nintendo consoles and the sega console. So in the long run the Pi is by far the better way to go.

    Would the 2gb RAM model also be good for PS1 and N64 games such as Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario 64?

    • @regis_c
      @regis_c 2 года назад +1

      From what I've heard, the RAM size doesn't really matter, PS1 games run fantastically (even in HD depending on the title), but if you want to emulate N64, you're better off using Batocera instead of Retropie. I'm saying this because when I tried N64 on Retropie, even with an overclocked Pi, I couldn't even get Super Mario 64 running properly at 480p, sometimes I couldn't even make it to the castle door after loading a save because the emulator kept crashing. But on Batocera, N64 is a lot better, like Super Mario 64 can run at full speed at 1080p with minimal to no overclocking needed, and plenty of other games work just as well on Batocera better than on Retropie (for some titles, you may need to lower the resolution to get it to run at full speed, but lowering it to 720p should still be good enough). And if your controller supports rumble, like the 8bitdo SN30 Pro I'm using, it even emulates the rumble pak well! I'm not kidding, assuming you got your N64 roms legally, I urge you to give it a try.

    So, I'm very new to this whole Raspberry Pi & RetroPie thing. I am not very knowledgeable about it at all. Recently, I purchased the LABISTS Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Complete Starter PRO Kit with 32GB Micro SD Card (4GB RAM). I was finally able to get it set up and I was able to play a few games on it last night (5/26/21). The main reason why I decided to go with a Raspberry Pi was because I'm a child of the 80s and 90s. I wanted to have a system that let me play retro video games such as arcade games and console games (Genesis & SNES) from that time period. The problem I've run into now is that some of the roms work fine and others don't. I can't figure out why this is happening. I have heard that arcade roms use MAME, etc . . . Some of the arcade and 16-bit console roms are working, but other ones are not. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix this latest issue that I'm facing? Thanks.

      The operating system is stored on a MicroSD card. The reason two are used in this video is that the first came pre-loaded with Raspian, which is a common operating system used on Raspberry Pi builds. It’s kind of like what you’d use on a typical desktop computer. The other MicroSD card had the RetroPie operating system. You don’t need both if don’t want one of them

      @@blaine6000 he is using a flash drive to transfer his files from ArcadePunks to his RP and the files load onto the micro SD card. Could you load the uncompressed torrent files onto the micro SD card that contains Retro Pie (both on the same micro SD Card) or is the flash drive needed?

      @@r.zaneprice4812 Not sure about that. Give your method a try and if it works, great! But when in doubt I’d just follow the steps in the video since you know it works.

      I would recommend two microsd cards that are the exact same model. I also would reccomend making an image of ur microsd card using windisk32 or applepibaker as a backup, in case yours gets corrupted.

    Confused a bit. You say don't buy a pre-imaged card because they are stealing by not paying for the game, but then encourage us to steal from them instead or to buy the kit the kit that comes with said card?
