  • Automotive Engineer David Chao used to own the Lexus IS 500 - a sports sedan that's hiding a glorious 5.0L V-8 engine in its bay. But as his needs changed, he traded it for the Lexus GX 460 which also has a wonderful V-8 engine. Still, David misses driving the IS 500 and talks about his experience in this video.

@@tarkovtxusa6626 got you. Yea I was thinking about getting one but I’m in jersey and it’s mostly cold here so not sure if getting rwd would be the best idea. So I’m steering towards the is 350 with awd. But the v8 is beautiful. Wish I lived somewhere hot 😂

@@HybridMoosa I'm originally from NJ, near Toms River and then lived in NYC for 5 years before relocating to Texas in 1998. The IS500 would be fine for NJ weather, just keep good tires like a Michelin Pilot All Season on it. I had a 350 F-Sport as a bridge car while waiting for the 500. The AWD has the 6-and saps performance a bit but then again, the 8 speed is often searching for the right gear. I like the platform and I'm older so I'm not a bench racer, but the main appeal of the IS is that it's a car that's "fast enough" and will be a more durable alternative to the Euro and US alternatives and probably the Acura or Infiniti too. AWD is definitely nice in the northeast and if you don't mind the different drive dynamics of the 6 speed it's a good option. But I'd probably buy the 500 and just deal with a few "snow days" and stay home.

Great review and detail! Just picked mine up last week after it was on a train from Portland for about 10 days. Came from a 2021 TLX ASpec SHAWD. BIG difference. Obviously power and sound but the fit and finish, craftsmanship, etc. It’s a real joy so far. I wanted blue with the red interior but had to settle with cloudburst grey with the red inside. The body lines and styling still shows off well. It’s way more planted than I expected as well. Barely any body roll. Just a fantastic vehicle! The TLX is such a big and heavy car as well. I’ll miss the ambient lighting but that’s about it. Cheers!

Loving my new IS500, but if it came in a manual it would be absolutely PERFECT. I would have bought 2 of them the same day.
I prefer the "outdated" interior. Functionally perfect, quality materials and has a classic feel that mature car enthusiasts prefer. One of those 'if you know you know' type of cars that only a certain group of people can truly appreciate. The only thing I wish was improved is the resolution of the screen and 360 birds eyeview cameras. The auto transmission behavior doesnt deserve as much criticism as it gets if you want a dual personality car.

Upgrade the tires to PS4S, drop in a sport air filter, and drive the car in Manual & Sport S+ and it's badass. Went on a mountain run last weekend with Bimmers, Porsches, and Vettes...and had no problems hanging with them at all. After 3+ hours of hard driving, I wasn't beaten up at all. Popped that badboy into custom mode and cruised the 2 hours back to the city. If you know when to apply the right driving modes/techniques, this car is the perfect Jekyll & Hyde setup. Also, while the suspension is soft, it means the car is very comfy to ride around in. Impacts are no harsher than they are in your average family sedan. Well the dead spot was there. An absolute disconnect from any steering feel. Don’t know how much this is influenced by Lexus Driving Signature or just the way an IS feels but it was there. I also believe the tune was to blame not so much the transmission itself. But it is absolutely slow compared to say a ZF. The transmission would “clunk” on downshift gear skips. It would only seem to function well going balls to the wall or completely babying it. Not what should be acceptable at that price point and as something Lexus is advertising as a F Sport Performance model.
