It's all a comedy, but when at 6:26 the German soldiers enter the restaurant, that is the genius of this comedy, it looks so real. So this is not a mediocre, one-dimensional comedy but serious art.
It was a big loss yes, but I think Captain Bertorelli, portrayed by Gavin Richards from mid-season 4 to Season 6, was brilliant as well. I wonder why he left as well, after Season 6. In season 7, his unfillable shoes, the italian Captain was portrayed by Roger Kitter, who is funny, but he was not in Allo Allo, It didn't work, and he was written out after Season 7. Hans was the best Captain of course. Loved his cameo in Season 7, when Rene and Edith travels to England.
They nicked the rhyming from the The Danny Kaye film "The Court Jester" The vestle with the pestle is the brew that is true, but the flagon with dragon is the brew thats not for you!
I definitely need to do a rewatch. This show was so well written and acted. Sam Kelly as Hans was brilliant.

Sam Kelly was brilliant in Allo Allo seem to be really enjoying the role and gave it 100 % his partnership with Richard Marner was great.
