In this video, I share my experience of spending a week at Punta Mona, an off-the-grid permaculture ecovillage and hippie commune tucked inside the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica.
Punta Mona is an off-the-grid permaculture community home to hundreds of varieties of tropical fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs, and medicinal plants. The humans who inhabit this land are passionate about living in harmony with nature and each other.
Founded in 1997 by visionary permaculture expert and plant wizard, Stephen Brooks, Punta Mona was built for sustainability and regenerative living, as a solution to the modern ways of life that are destroying natural systems.
When I saw Punta Mona featured on the hit Netflix show, “Down to the Earth with Zac Efron” I knew it was a place I needed to visit someday. I didn’t expect that day to come so quickly. So when I was invited by my dear friend Kiley to spend New Years' at Punta Mona, I knew I had to go. I made the decision last minute to take off to Costa Rica after Christmas, to witness how the community at Punta Mona lives.
Throughout my week at Punta Mona, I met so many incredible human beings who care so much about the Planet and being good stewards of this earth. I learned so much about permaculture, sustainability, farming, growing food, off-the-grid living, solar energy, composting, and all sorts of regenerative techniques that allow humans to live more sustainably and in harmony with the land.

The real question is: How can we have more places like this in the world without charging tons of money to be a volunteer?
That was my thought. I would love to go do this but can't afford it.
Build upon the things that already exist in our community. Get active in your local community gardens, replace your lawn with native biodiversity and gardens, open up a seed library and a tools library at a local center. Collect rainwater, have chickens, if you don't have access to land grow hydroponically. It's hard to completely turn around our lifestyle from urban to one-with-nature in one fell swoop, but as a community we can morph towards that goal. The more people the better.
How much do they charge?
@@gimnli $1000 for 2 weeks of hard-working
@@danilles.4247 Absolutely! Getting together with the community is the answer. Each one of us can contribute with something. It takes time, but the path and the result is worth it!
$145,- per day to "volunteer"?!? I'd really like to know how much they pay back to the local community or if it's just a rich people's playground to play hippie for a couple of weeks? Sounds more like a lucrative business to me than a willingness to change the world for the better. Just more of the same old, same old. 🙄
145 per day... that's crazy.
145 !! is what an average people earn in Mexico for 2 o 3 weeks for hard work!!
Yeah, I lived here for 4 months, it's changed so much, so much more money focused, just another plantation.
Wait what they pay to volunteer???? Oh no this is rediculas
I'd also like to know where that money goes.
When I saw all those women hugging the one who was crying I realized what being human is supposed to look like. So touching, we need this sense of community back in our lives, it is an emergency. I can just imagine how wonderful life would be with a built in support network where we would lift each other up rather than seek division.
Can't handle the real world? Those people are call losers. My guess is you've never done a damn thing in your life but live off government handouts.
@@georgefaulk2528 Bullshit…so working for a restaurant 17/24hrs is called success?! Not seeing your wife and children? Beings stress all day? Ahah I think you have changed success for slavery
@@marianavivanco4152 Spending 8 to 12 month away from your family in a combat zone 3 times. Only to come back the last time without the use of my legs. You have no idea what stress is. All these people are total losers. It's clear they have no concept of the real world. When you get to old to work you'll be a burden on a country that you did absolutely nothing for. It's nothing but take take take that people like you drag down this country. We the people that give to this country are getting tired of losers like you and these dumb people.
@@georgefaulk2528 absolutely your story is heartbreaking!! But for the SAME reason you should not have done that for a government that only sees us as meat to go to work or to go to war! WHY war? Against Who we are fighting? Maybe the biggest fight to do is against the tiranny of the same politicians Who doesn’t go to war themselves but put US on the front!! I prefer being a loser on an island enjoyng sun and fresh food than being used by government as they wish! About the elders they are not a BURDEN they RAISED us gave shelter/ care and love, it is our turn to reciprocate that! Oh no I forgot lets put them on a hospital and DRUG them to death they are a burden no?!
When I saw them hugging I just thought 'Fluffy wanna be hippies that are really just gap yar uni student that identify with the puppet Greta
As a Costa Rican, I love permaculture and this type of lifestyle but is sad to see this kind of places in my country without any local in the video, enjoying our natural resources but without a single bit of Costa Rican culture, sorry guys but this gives me colonialist vibes.
En serio, ni siquiera se benefician los locales wtf

Totally! They’re acting like they’re the first people to come up with this idea. What they’re missing in the description is it’s mostly White, expats trying out a different lifestyle. How would this be different if there were more indigenous and Costa Ricans in this video?!
do you know any places like this that include Costa Ricans and your culture? I would love to explore this land but I want to be respectful of your culture and really learn FROM you.
Gracias!!
Me as a Costa Rican who likes to explore and study nature dont really like this. It is ok if they want to come and live this kind of experience but if you are a Costa Rican these people will make you feel bad and look over their shoulders like if you owed them some kind of service for them coming here. Im White and have a good english so im treated pretty good but as soon as they realize you are from this land something switches in them. I love the fact that you people like it and enjoy it but I want to make sure you know that as hippie as it looks this is just a bussines and it is a branch of a corporation that you are supporting and is taking away the most beatiful lands to give it to the wealthy.
Thank you for sharing this. I made a comment expressing a similar idea a few days ago, but it rings much more true coming from an actual Tico sharing their experiences and how businesses like them affect their lives and communities
These places are not made for the average person they are made for the privileged hippie to come and do their kumbaya cosplay, love and peace, assume that everything in Costa Rica is like that and then continue with their normal life in the United States
Stop ! Too much truth that I don't want to face. Let me have my fantasy,
I thought the same, actually they came to latin america because they al ready fuck up their land ( USA)... and yes, the rest of the country is facing with a lot of problems!! Grettings from México.
I'm from Costa Rica and yes that's exactly what it is. I can assure you 99% of the people there are foreigners
And when we get there they won’t even acknowledge our faces , act like Latinos clean their toilets
Kumbaya cosplay 😂🤣 love it!
It would be nice if people could do this in their own communities where they come from. Don’t get me wrong I am absolutely on board with this but we need to do this in the cities the suburbs. All across the planet. Bring the knowledge home and see how we can implement it
Unfortunately, here in the West we’ve replaced the forest jungle with concrete jungle which sucks the soul out of you. It’s no wonder the most preferred vacation destination we go to is nature. Even heaven/Jannah is described as gardens and rivers such as the Garden of Eden. Anyways, wish you the best.
Assalaamu Alaykum (Peace Be With You).
Brother man. Excellent perspective. I constantly think of that day after day. There are many thoughts I have on this but I'll share one. Start a political movement and gain tons of power
Yes. I agree
I have been trying to do this all my 65 yrs. Recycling cans and glass baby bottles from hospital I worked in,lived in inner city well under means then in country with children, goats, hens homeschooling around ecology/thought/science. Now in a dying town still showing self reliance, ecology while encouraging literacy, replanting the very old trees dying around me. Wish I could have made more massive changes but my mother out law says never discount the change of 1%
pura vida!
this isnt really very hippie , i would say its neohippie for city kids who are into trends like minimalism, hipsterism and such. you can be a hippie anywhere you want, its more of a lifestyle then giving away stuff and planting crops. i was young and used to camp and fish and trek and be by myself a lot, that was the best time ever. then i did meaningless jobs for 20 years. now i just spend more time doing art, painting and music by myself, and i feel more hippie then i ever was. its an attitude and a feeling. and being in more solitude spaces and freeing your mind, and these are things u find yourself. if u need to be taught yoga, breathing and ceremonies, then the part of exploration is dead, you again have gone study mode and not figured things out yourself. being a hippie should be a spiritual, emotional, physical and mental journey that u need to take by yourself. however if this is a catalyst for u to open your mind then its useful i guess.
like you said, it can be a catalyst
Some people have rough backgrounds or might just need to have a supportful entourage (in a place like this or just by your friends any where else in the world) in order to feel alright with opening up
Letting go of what's been instilled in us is a very different process depending on the person i think, it's about having the courage to cut the crap and I also think it can happen in different moments of our life, some earlier on, like you, and some later on
Anyways, i like what you are saying though
I agree with you (even though the place still looks amazing). I thought that moving to a community like this will change my life and me. I didn't move yet, but have realized that I can live this life right now where I am. It's not about the place or people, it's all about the mindset
@@poppyseed7639 yes i totally agree poppy.
really nicely put, I've recently been interested in the hippie culture and your opinion is really informative, thanks for sharing!
@@poppyseed7639 Exactly 😊💓 One of my favorite sayings is, “wherever you go, there you are.” Meaning, you take yourself with you; you can’t outrun the vibration you are at just by changing scenery. You have to go inward to alchemize and bring in your true natural highest vibration. If living in this place in the video would help that, then you’ll naturally be led there. But if it isnt what your soul really needs to grow from lessons or remember its own Light and such, then your journey won’t find you ending up there.
To really change our lives, we must go inward and let that change our outward, rather than the other way around. We all hold the Heaven on Earth Divine keycodes within our own DNA to unlock the exact knowing we need to have paradise inside-out! It is our Divine birthright to walk with the knowledge that we are Heaven on Earth, and all the Earth is our Heaven. And so it is 🙏 blessings be, sweet child of Highest Light 🤍❤️🔥💓
I'm a teenager but once I graduate and go to college I want to learn about horticulture and permaculture. I want to make great big botanical gardens and probably even live in a community like the one shown in this video. It's want my soul wants. It sucks that my conformist voice tells me this is silly or culty when it's actually what we need to do to help the Earth and to be happy. The zombie thing is totally relatable because I'm still breaking out of the zombie thinking. Thank you for this type of content.
Edit: I had no idea of the experiences people have had at this village. Thank you all for sharing.
@Loco Guano That is very good advice too.
@@isadore7221 I've been in a cult. Cult as a concept is controversial and not easy to define, but I believe it's most useful to look at specific dynamics (like manipulation) instead of broad definitions like "a group with shared idiosyncratic beliefs or goals". From there, you can start to make distinctions between cult dynamics and just general group dynamics. There are unhealthy group dynamics that I wouldn't necessarily classify as cult dynamics.
@@raz0rcarich99 Thank you that's a good strategy. I can't speak from personal experience but it sometimes seems hard to pick some stuff up without boxes you can tick.
theres a dark side to communities like this. ideally we want our own biodynamic acre or two or three.
your conformist voice is correct. its a fucking cult, i lived there for 8 months during the pandemic
As a Costa Rican I've always been very hesitant about this type of communities since sometimes it seems like they're a bit unconcious about the place they are in an the local communities. Seeing this video helps me understand a bit more of the philosophy behind it and it's honestly pretty impressive in a lot of ways and I love the fact there is a major respect for the earth. That being said, I can't assume since Costa Ricans can look like any person of the video, but by the surnames and accents I assume they are not that many Costa Ricans in that community which is kind of sad and feels a bit appropiating in a way too.
Lo mismo pensé, yo esperaba ver a puros chancletudos de la UCR, pero puro extranjero parece
They do is to teach how to care the land, plants with a permaculture, not just the horrible huge monocultive bananas plantations in costa rica that spray lots of chemicals ending killing the reefs and wildlife and workers working like slaves... Well you know.... I suggest you to go there and bring friends to learn how to do a properagriculture and take care your land
@@mexicoland Banana plantations were mostly common on one zone of the country, and is not even remotely the only type of plantation. And guess from what country is the company responsible for that exploitation?
Read mamita yunai.
@@mexicoland Yup, what we needed: gringos coming to our country to save us from ourselves. That sounds pretty much like the Monroe Doctrine. By the way, the companies that Costa Rica into a slave and plantation centrical country were from USA as a way to make us their backyard, just so you know. Read about what the United Fruit Company did in Costa Rica and stop spreading that kind of bullshit idiology.
I feel you mate. Not seeing any local dwelling the commune says a lot aswell. But where do these people should run for? In USA or Europe, where bananas don't grow and the land prices break the ceiling? If they don't violate the local laws and don't act like a bunch of stinky wannabe-neocolonialists, I think it's all pretty much OK
As a costa rican, I love to see people coming and enjoy my country but its crazy to me that nowhere on that video people talk about the costarican culture nor there was no costarican people to be seen like damn I have to know about this through tourists
Who watched the movie "The Beach" with leo di caprio? It reminds me of that movie. Everything seems fine and cool until things gets funky.
im certain there are only a few who actually stay there for years on end. the others are people who show up and volunteer their time and energy...a steady stream of ppl in and out of that place. surely it would get boring after awhile, like anything else. no roads into it, so im assuming no motor vehicles of any kind. nah, ill pass on going backwards.
See how Hollywood conditions people?
@@Gizziiusa No phone, no lights, no motor car not a single luxury like Robinson Crusoe, it's primitive as can be.
@Loco Guano god bless your placenta
@@Gizziiusa and most "volunteers" are actually paying 100$ a night to stay there and live in a borderline culty """hippie""" community. It's just smart marketing to rip off wealthy naive wannabe hippy gringos
For me this is a form of feel-good exotic tourism/volunteering. Nothing wrong with that, however it doesn't appeal to me as it probably would when I was a teenager ot in my early 20s when I was single and looking for like-minded people.
So I'm for the general vibe of this video and the community it's highlighting, but there's an important point about this that I think gets lost. How many of the people in this community were Costa Rican? How much does the community contribute to undoing the centuries of exploitation and genocide that the native people of this region faced due to US imperialism? Is it really our place to come in as foreigners and take land to create our vision of a better world (and it is better, don't get me twisted) while simultaneously excluding the very people whose land we wish to use? You are drawing more and more people to Costa RIca, which, within the current system, leads to things like more streets and cars, more power lines, more deforestation and encroachment into native habitats. How about instead, you buy 100 acres of farmland in the middle of the US that's currently being used for monoculture agrobusiness farming and convert that into a permaculture system built on sustainable living? Think about how your vision and behavior affects those native to the place you are invading and the wider ecosystem. I'm not saying this is on the whole bad, but there are negative aspects below the surface which need to also be contemplated
100%! Thank you.
Yes!! My point exactly!!
This was my first thought too - I was recently at a virtual meeting by people setting up an "eco-village" here In Turkey which was basically like Marie Antoinette's toy farm at Versailles. But after I checked out the Punta Mona website, I was less suspicious. They do apparently work together with the local people. I don't know how well it works out, but their hearts seem to be in the right place.
@@RobinTurner thanks for sharing. I'm sure their hearts are in the right place, no doubt. But even in this sort of material it looks and feels like it caters to and is "for" foreigners and tourists in a manner that reeks of a history of colonialism. I know their intentions are pure, but like the roots of some of the practice are colored by that colonial past, and at least on a surface level, that aspect doesn't seem to be addressed
@hunchoz t and centuries of economic colonialism that left them too poor to do so
if you live in the EU, I highly recommend Galicia in Spain, or Northern Portugal, cheap, plentiful with water and mild winters. If tropical fruits are what attract you in, You can easily grow avocados and citrus, and bananas or papaya with some fine-tuning along with every temperate or mediterranean climate crop you can think of. The people here are at the mercy of neoliberalism and right-wing politics so their entire rural economy is based on destructive mining, forestry or cattle-raising industries. Luckily most of the land is still in the hands of regular people, who own human-scale homesteads of 1-5 acres. These traditional homesteaders, tend to enjoy foreigners and could use a lot of new ideas from permaculture, syntropic agroforestry and forest gardening. So any land you buy here will probably be much better off than in the hands of the local tycoons who are buying up land for cheap, polluting industries. As a Galician, please buy land here, I don't care if you contribute or not to the local economy or not, or create jobs, I just want people who will take care of the land in a regenerative way!

Gringos or not, if these groups visit or settle in this soil, and all of the sudden start proclaiming that in my Costa Rica things are one way or the other, generalizing the culture, the population, or even ignoring all of these aspects, saying that they "elevate" natives culturally, and improve the country in terms of renewable/sustainable energies, then first, let me tell you that's all BS, and second, the so-called "Down-to-Earth" just seems to me another term for arrogance and thoughtlessness.
How beautiful, my soul is definitely longing for something like that. You realize the matrix we live in when you witness something so opposite and healthy

Look up places like Carpio or Leon Xlll too see if you're hippie lifestyle is really finding self-love and prosperity for others
In the video they made it sound like they specifically chose a spot far enough away from local communities that they wouldn't bother anyone. Is that not the case?

There are hundreds of intentional communities all over the states. And I bet you there are dozens if not hundreds of co-ops in your area if you just look. People are already doing this everywhere, you don't need to travel to another country to have this experience.
It's definitely a great concept and I'm sure there's tons of inspiration to be taken.
But as a Costa Rican I would ask of you to consider also visiting the surrounding areas and support the natives and small businesses owners of the area, many of them live of tourism and have tons of wisdom. My issue with Punta Mona is their insanely high prices and how many of its visitors skip the smaller, unassuming NATIVE beach communities which probably inspired the project to begin with

As a Costa Rican, it saddens me that most of the positive commenters are probably ignorant of how harmful these types of activities are to locals. Seeing how gentrified my country has been the last couple of decades precisely because of this idea of Costa Rica being a paradise on Earth fabricated for foreigners to grab and enjoy as they please is just so so wrong and you all could not care less.
The cost of living for people on the coasts and tourist areas is exorbitantly high for actual Costa Ricans that what else is there left to do but leave our hometown/house/actual community to live in places where we can actually buy groceries.
You can go back to your country which is probably way better off than any Latin American country but we have to stay in this mess (because yeah, it is not as nice when you have to live here as a Costa Rican, not an “expat”), while not being able to even visit our own beaches because we simply cannot pay your prices.
👏👏 these digital nomads are really f#%en a lot of Latin erican countries. Plus, they don't even bother to learn the language. They can't even pronounce Costa Rica correctly.
How is this harmful?
No sea bruto . Mae . Es mejor wlloa que lo que hacen Los propios ricoa. Ademas no entiende usted como trabaja El Turismo
I think about this a lot when I hear of other Americans going off to Costa Rica like it’s this empty island or something. Thank you for giving the perspective of someone who grew up there because I wonder what the influx of expatriates is like for the locals. I think the community aspect is really awesome but I do agree with all the other comment saying that this should happen in cities and suburbs and this moving off to the jungle and beaches due to currency advantages is kind of modern day colonist
very true... spent good time in costa rica surfing in the 90...the Californication of Costa Rica is just sick.
Good morning and have a great day!

@@livingtheskylife Well, holy shit Sky! 128k viewers!! You are on top of your manifestation game aren't you? 💯✨💚
I’m only one minute in, but this is incredible 💕
I am all for alternative communities...except when they start asking for 'donations'. Also a lot of people who leave after an extended period leave and depending on situation, many will have no savings and expect other tax payers to help them out with government benefits. There has been many of these communities that have existed in America, especially in 1960s/1970s...and most of them failed. If a community like this is truly a better way to live, then it needs to be sustainable without financial help from the outside.
As long as finance is involved it will fail. Take a look at the bigger picture The World, and you will the the total failure caused by finance. Remove it from the Earth and it will heal itself without the help of those who have brought about destruction upon it.
Unfortunately, it’s not sustainable.

Yes! I love hearing synchronicities with all of you it’s so awesome
Being able to disconnect from society and go somewhere with your inner child's passion sounds like a dream! I love nature and love nice humans. I'm a kid with anxiety, depression, adhd, and probably autism. I'm also apart of the lgbtq and other things society looks down at. It's torture, but the hippies are so welcoming, warm, and amazing! They are positive energy for me. While I've always been a hippie even when I don't try, I just connect more and more. It feels right.
It was totally necessary for me to stumble across this vlog 🙇🏽♀️
I’m assuming this is a very extroverted community. Not sure how well most introverted folks would do. But it does looks cool!
My thought's exactly, it'd be cool if one guy just comes by for his meal and the someone says "That's Gary, he likes to be left alone but have people around, don't disturb him."
It’s only extroverted because we are one & they are all just talking to their selves 😹
im introverted af but i feel like this would bring introverts out of their shell to really get to know themselves better. everyone is a mirror to who you are. also theres plenty of space to still do whatever you want if you wanna meditate alone and be alone by the beach all day
I am loner but want something like this very small scale, and am not hippie. Living in Tortuguero.
@@SimplySami13 Exactly! 'Introvert' is just a label. People can grow easily in such a healthy environment.

How does the founder of this place involve the local Costa Rican community? There’s a lot of westerners volunteering so I’m curious to know if this village is benefiting the local people, especially if there are any indigenous groups nearby. Because otherwise it does appear to be quite a euro-centric woofing/backpacker environment which are a privileged portion of the population.
@Cristina Valle thankyou so much for the response. i wish everyone would see this, its so important everyone knows the impacts of westerners coming to other countries to buy land because it is cheap. i know they think they are doing good ecologically, but what about socially? i dont support a privileged outsider who does not involve the local people.
Good content!
Thank you...
Infinite blessings to all :)
Love you always! Such a fun trip 🌞 🌊
A sign of the spiritual upgrades of the permaculture community manifesting in the physical-let’s acknowledge the fact that everyone’s hair in this video is shiny, thick and beautiful, and everyone’s skin is fresh, glowing, and flawless. It’s so telling how the Matrix is literally creating chronic adverse effects on our health, even right down to sub-optimizing our DNA/gene expression health.
Yes it just makes sense !!!
Yeah right dude lol these are just a bunch of priviliged kids that want to feel theyre saving the world
@@IrohsTeaShop Doesn’t matter if they are or aren’t in this instance. I’m making the point that universally, no matter what your socioeconomic status is, if you can exit the Matrix however you’re able to detach, do so because it’s good for your health-genetic, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. My comment is based on recognizing them transform in the same way I did when I exited. I’m nowhere near a “privileged kid”, but I still made the executive decision to detach from the Matrix. I didn’t whisk away to a remote location with a private chef, but I did build my own True North of daily activities and personal focus where I currently live, that isn’t consumed by inconsequential, negative priorities. I had the same results: my hair grew thick, shiny, and long, my skin started to perpetually glow, and all dimensions of my health improved drastically, so did my overall quality of life. I incubated myself from engaging with the Matrix and it was a game-changer, like it’s illustrated for the permaculture.
EXACTLY!

I'm a former hippie who lived hitchhiking around a bit in US, Canada, Mexico and Central America. I loved that life, and hated going back to the States and getting the expected college degree and working 32 in some places I loved and other environments that were close to intolerable. But I miss being a vagabond. Would love visit that place for while before I'm too old to travel anymore. I also know some folks in Panama I'd like to visit as well, then check out Machu Picchu as las ruinas have always haunted me since my trip to Tikal and Chichen Itza, et al
Why'd you stop? You could have lived your whole life like that. Even now, you could "retire" in a community. You don't have to be like everyone else if you don't want to.
@@apollofateh324Why did I stop? Bad knees and a rotator cuff tear that I'm waiting on. Docs here are all pretty busy. Also, getting older. My backpacking days are over but I'm trying to find a van that my brother could help convert into a travel van and just drive places, that is when the borders are all clear. When your joints go on you, travel becomes very painful.

@@danbuk1083 Costa Ricans are colonizers sponsor indigenous land too just fyi. But that doesn’t matter nowadays but do u think it is fine if someone comes and lives completely off grid by themselves in Costa Rica?
I would really like to try something like this one day. But I am afraid my introvertedness will cause problems for me.
Follow your fear !!!
Aw honey! I hear you, but you will be surprised what happens if you go anyway
I always considered myself to be highly introverted until I went to a permaculture community in Costa Rica. I ended up living there for nearly a year and it changed my life!! Turned out I wasn't as introverted as I thought. When you're around a group of open and accepting people, you start to realize 'introvert' is mostly a label and a self limiting belief.. I guess maybe it also depends on whether or not you're around the right people. Connections in these places are deep, soul connections that can awaken something within you. Go for it!
@grip The people there seem so heart-connected, empathetic and conscious that you ll be received and understood by them so well. I would do it 💜
@@dcfreedom1 do you mind telling us which permaculture community you went to in Costa Rica? I wanna have more options besides this one.
Pretty short sighted to think everyone could live like this. Its all easy when you live in a tropical environment with an abundance of food and it feels like a vacation. But lets get real. 0.0001% of the earth is like this. Like to see you go North and survive the winter, in this life style. Good luck.
This video was not suggesting that everyone needs to live like this. I am not sure how that conclusion was drawn. But we certainly need to shift the way we do things on a massive scale and communities like this creating innovative sustainable ways of living that foster community are really important to showcase!
@@livingtheskylife but the video implies it, as does Punta Mona itself and this is the main problem. I have known Stephen for 22 years and I know his heart is in the right place but he acts like anyone can do this. The reality is he comes from a wealthy family and the overwhelming majority of people's dads can't buy them land at a young age or give them money to start a business. His denial of his privilege in this situation is going to continue to turn people off. He called his background middle class in an insta video and was called out by one of his friends because he wants to see himself that way, but in reality this place is a direct result of privilege. I was one of the original volunteers on this farm, we spoke a lot of Spanish and half the people we worked with were locals. It was free to volunteer. I still recognize my privilege of not being able to work for several months to live there. This video comes off as a community of Westerners disconnected from the rest of the country and it's people. Maybe this is the way since Padi passed away, that connection was lost.
Feeling so much love for this place and this video. We are in Costa Rica right now and not sure we're going to get the chance to visit one of these amazing projects and communities which is a shame. We crave community and a more simple and holistic life. This is goals right here! :D💚🌍💚
Oh my, I love this. Love to get out of my apartment and live like this. Such great folks.
I so wish these were more accessible and common. I’m over here stressing that I can’t find a higher paying job and letting it affect my self worth, meanwhile there’s communities like these where people value strengths that actually relate to our well being.
I know, I wish they were easier to find. You could try living out of your car for a while, saving the rent money, and buying a small house at an eco community. Just an idea, but you would be free.
Did you saw the prices to stay there? They value your money... and by the look of it , you don’t get much of it!
@@alejandrosolano1292 no haha I didn’t actually look into it. But I get that nothing in life is free.
@@OMFGITSVIKKI sure, but as a Costa Rican, with that prices I can tell you , you can have better conditions for a month! For example, they have their foods planned so the people eat “rice OR beans” wich are accesible here, REALLY ACCESIBLE. And that’s just the beginning. This place is expensive, ridiculously expensive. Capitalism at its finest.

Padi!!!! 💖💖💖 So wonderful to see this place doing so wonderfully! Aloha to you all!!!! 🌺🤙🌺
Interesting how they come to another country and exclude the natives, why not do it in the States? This all creates the idea that Costa Rica is just up for grabs for anyone that's from the northern hemisphere. Why don't I see them speaking Spanish? Trying to learn the culture of Costa Rica? Mingle with the locals?
People don't want to do the work of cultivating community and sustainability in their own neighborhoods, so they move away to idyllic lands, buy up the land, and create these isolated communities which are very very beautiful but extremely whitewashed and don't actually improve the lives of anyone who isn't living there. It's a lack of integrative thinking
@@danilles.4247 Well said. I guess that's why I have mixed feelings about places like this. Almost in a way feels like a Costa Rica version of U.S. gentrification...
This is why the solutions to climate change wont come from the west. Westerners are too used to excluding everyone else. Still at least these people are doing something positive... Its something at least...
@@danilles.4247 Why not allow people to do whatever they want with their lives and money? Maybe you see a lot of westerners creating places like this because similar places have never seized to exit in less developed countries. Frankly, I'd rather buy land in another country because of the warmer climate, it will allow me to grow more cultures and I wouldn't have sit at home and wait for the long months of winter to end. It's great that we are not bound to a place, even more so because each one of us has different needs.
As somebody who is an American citizen but has traveled the world via military life, I myself would prefer to buy land literally anywhere but America.
