What a strange little wonderful movie... I just love Cagney.... I guess I like all the Cagney's. With his sister in the movie, and his brother producing, you can't go wrong with the gang of C's. Really enjoyed this movie.
The Time Of Your Life . What a fabulous rendition of the dreams and struggles of humanity. James Cagney was superb and his character full of love and compassion! Every actor was delightful!!! Thank you!......
Its 2020 , ordered pizza got a six pack now watching this classic , these people are long gone and there kids have grown and gone , but the magic still there .

This film is truly about nothing . It's about a daily ordinary life. Truly appreciate. Simple but enjoyable. I enjoyed it from the start to the end. No story line but somehow U be hooked. Sensational.
True of the movie. Not true of the play the author wrote that has been performed on stages large and small in many decades. Nor the published script available in book form in libraries.
We get caught up in our own everyday problems. A refreshing film that allows us to exhale and breathe. The entire cast is excellent. Watch and enjoy the film and feel good again. * * * * * a five star production.
Cagney was a superb, versatile actor who excelled in so many drama and comedy films. Then we have the great character actor, William Bendix, an outstanding actor, who graced many wonderful films.
2 of my favorites, can't recall a movie with either one in it that I disliked. Cagney in Footlight Parade is amazing especially considering when it was made. The old movies blow away those made now.
@@JM-xr4zs That's where I first saw William Bendix. I was probably only about six or seven, but his face stayed in my memory. Now I'm watching these movies that were made way before I was born, and look who is in this one, William Bendix. Based on what I just watched, he was an excellent actor. The facial expressions, and the timing, he was very talented. I have long believed that it's the great character actors who are the glue of the movie.
I worked with a guy when i was just a teen and then later too in the the 60's and 70's that worked on Bill Cagney's ranch in Granada Hills. He would talk about what a kind and great guy Cagney was when my friend was a very young man. I believe kindness and human heartedness was the hallmark of all three siblings. I can say of my departed friend in passing, "it takes one to know one" amigo. Great film. Thank you!
Wayne Morris World War II decorated Ace Fighter Pilot hero who shot down 7 confirmed Japanese zeros and several non confirmed planes also sinking a escort vessel,a gunboat, and helped sinking a submarine and damaged a heavy cruiser. He was awarded 4 distinguished flying crosses and 2 air metals. He died at an early age of 45 and he is buried in Arlington National Cemetery for war heroes.
Almost all along the film I expected for a music-hall show to start, with all those artists, but I realize now the show was at its best and authentic like this. And yes, the cast at the beginning was as friendly, as the the whole film was
James Cagney really put this CLASSIC together. LOTS of great entertainment. PURE Americana. Comments below say the rest. Thanks a million, AGAIN, PizzaFlix.
@@maggieb369 I believe so. She was in a room full of other secretaries and they all would look up whenever one of the Cagney's walked in and say "Good morning Mr/Miss Cagney" kind of like in the movies lol. She said they were very nice.
Very refreshing to see Cagney in a different kind of role; loved seeing William Bendix (I remember "The Life of Riley" famous TV show back in the 50's. Another favorite of mine was Broderick Crawford in "Highway Patrol" another 50's TV show and who can forget the famous Ward Bond of "Wagon Train". All the greats in one terrific comedy of events. I also loved Wayne Morris as the clumsy and awkward gofer for Cagney. It reminds of an older version of today's "Cheers" where you wanna go where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came. The Time of Your Life is the best thing that comes to having a heart and soul that I have seen in a long time. Thanks for sharing.
Great movie, great cast. My favorite being James Cagney, always to me the toughest kid, on the block, that it don't pay to cross him. He actually remind me a lot of my 1st husband, because I had looked at him as unbeatable, and not solely in fist fights, just the way he carried himself, with confidence.
Good and simple movie. Many stars turned up in this film. Also, It would've been nice if Cagney had danced with the pianist. I walked down James Cagney street, often on 91st between 2nd and 3rd ave. In NYC. Great actor and dancer.
Everyone talks about how Marlon Brando revolutionized acting, but I think James Cagney got there first. The first 7 minutes of this film, his performance leaps off the screen. This film is pushing toward being 100 years old, but Cagney is as sparkling & charismatic & submerged in the role as actors who drove home from the set yesterday. There's just this...aliveness to Cagney's performances. It's not just him being himself either, because IRL he was a very modest humble quiet-spoken man. This is an absolutely stellar performance in a great play by Saroyan. The last 10 minutes or so was a little too 'perfect' & over the top for me, but up til then it was pitch-perfect. Thanks so much for uploading this beautiful film.
James Cagney is a better actor than Marlon Brando.M.Brando was very handsome and had the style of the mysterious man, J.Cagney was pure acting and zero looks.
I love this films which happen in a pub or restaurant or something like that where the people goes to stay only a few minutes or days and see the life round and round like the end of the novel " Grand Hotel".
it's 1948, the cast is past their prime & not much of a plot either but it's real treat to watch these show biz veterans preform... Thanks Pizza Flicks 😊
Thank you Pizzafix. This is one of those neat little films i never get tired of seeing. This is the first time I have seen such a good copy of this film.
As a play, it's clear the obvious connection this could have had on the television situation comedy "Cheers." I suppose the bartender, "Nick," is the only one whose name is known.

Broderick Crawford (Detective Matthews - Highway Patrol) as the cop, Natalie Schafer (Mrs. Howell - Gilligan's Island) as one of the 'finer people'., Jimmy Lydon (Henry Aldrich) as the lovestruck lad .. .
...."Colourful" James Barton (loved a 39 lb.midget) was born into a theatrical family on November 1, 1890 in Gloucester City, New Jersey. Barton began performing in minstrel shows and burlesque houses throughout the country in 1898.[2] His years of experience working with African American performers led to his becoming one of the first jazz dancers in America!
Some great actors in this movie, all of whom I normally enjoy. Just couldn't get into this film at all as I found it disjointed. Couldn't wait for it to end, so had to quit halfway through.
Brenda Jones You said it was "disjointed", and I can understand why you would say that, but Life is often 'disjointed' and does not always flow smoothly in our lives. From looking at this movie, I see that the location of the bar is down by the wharfs; the docks, and that is usually a rough & tumble part of town. The people who would frequent that bar would also be part of that rough & tumble part of society and not where the more educated and 'refined' people with money would live. Now the character Joe...just who was he & where did he come from and why is he at the bar so much? He obviously is educated and has some money ( but we never know just how much he might actually have ), and doesn't fit the typical person from that part of town. At some point in the movie, I wondered if Joe might have been an Angel in disguise, dispensing wisdom and encouragement and champagne to those who came in the place. So Brenda, this gem of a movie is a lot deeper than just what is on the surface. What about the Black piano player; how did he end up in that rough part of town and how did he learn to play; what is his story? The other characters also must have come from a "disjointed" background to wind up as steady customers at this run down bar. I found it all very interesting.
@@marbleman52 The scene with 'A lady of Quality' is truly magical. Have they ever met before? Maybe yes maybe no but their hearts are talking to each other. Saroyan often didn't explain things but left the viewer to make up their own minds. I've pondered this scene and there are no hard and fast conclusions, just like everyday life. Saroyan was a genius.
One the finest movies ever made and this is my all-time favorite.

Good review. Occasionally it gets overly silly and drawn out, but the magical Cagney makes this film about nothing work. The man was just pure gold.
