I paid around $600NZD for this saw, at the time, Makita had a promotion going where you got two batteries and a dual battery charger with this saw.
I purchased one last week as I have also just had a wood burner installed. I am VERY impressed with its performance

Wow, I'm impressed at what the 18x2 volts saw can do. I will add this to my list as well as the 1/2 " Impact wrench / drive.
I just ordered the DUC122 to relieve trees. Cant wait to get it, its weight is about 2,5 Kilogram so you can use it by one Hand when you standing on a tree or something. In the next months i will also order the DUC353.

Nice, nice saw. One thing to remember, batteries will keep improving over the years. But gasoline won't, they put ethanol in to ruin motors n dry seals. Done with gas chainsaws n trimmers. Electric one's will keep getting better n better. Plus you can go out to the garage and know your going to get the job done
I'm with you on everything except when it comes to trimmers. Extremely long working hours coupled with needed power for brush cutting put the gas trimmers ahead of battery ones. For the same reason you don't see a professional logger using a battery run chainsaw cause they use professional models from Stihl and Husqvarna. I'm not saying that in the future battery density and cordless technology in general won't be able to totally replace the gas operated machines, but that time is definitely not today or in the next 5 years..

Makita bought out Dolmar, who made the first gasoline powered saw. The Makita gasoline saws are still made pretty much by the Dolmar branch. They are a bit more money, but owning a bargain chainsaw that will not start and run on the third pull is now no bargain. Especially when a couple of your “buddies” are there on stools with constructive suggestions.

Make sure you get an extension chord that is at least 12 gauge wire, minimum. This is my first electric in about 10 years, and things sure have improved. The self-sharpener works great, and it just kept cutting through some pretty decent logs. Wear your eye protection, and ear protection. Excellent saw.
My first one was awesome and I cut my neighbor's trees down, he then borrowed it and cut his own hand wide open! Be careful.

I found out that having decent bar and chain oil affects run time. I was excited to test it out with whatever oil that was on hand, which was cooking oil. That didn’t work well. Now that it’s got some purpose made chain oil in it, it performs 2x as good.

Аккумуляторныю рассматривал чтоб не урезок был для леса,.. Но видимо технологии еще не шагнули 20 мин на 40 это многовато, считаю..

It’s really no big deal to refuel a battery saw. Just slap in fresh batteries. Sure, it would be pretty sweet not to have to change out batteries, but is it really that important, do you really want to work with all that battery weight? I bought bare tool Makita since I had batteries. It takes me about 500 watt hours of batteries to cut a full pickup load of 18” firewood from logs.
The 216 watt hours that two 6Ah LXT batteries produces is great. I suppose putting 15 cells in an LXT instead of 10 would be better. That would give you 324Wh and not be so taxing on the individual cells so much. My opinion.
500 watt hours is plenty of power to cut enough large diameter wood to fill my wagon with as much as I dare pull out of steep terrain with my RZR side by side. I am using a Archer 16 inch bar and full chisel chain to cut 14 to 25 inch logs and I love the chain. It cuts faster than the stock 14 inch with safety chain. I run the oiler on medium and it lasts for over 500 watt hours use.
On the negative side, Makita has an annoying activation button. It deactivates too quickly. I wedge an right angled piece of plastic in the upper handle safety latch switch and tape it down. This extends the "on" period to a minute or more. Of suppose the saw is more hazardous, but it is way easier to use. I love Makita’s sharp metal spikes to pivot the saw into the wood by levering up on the handle.
I’m assuming the saw is drawing around 1300 watts while under maximum load. [Does anyone know?] I assume this because there are 20 16850 cells with 20 amps nominal draw at 3.6V. So at best we have 20x20x3.6 = 1440 watts. So 1300 watts would allow a safety margin. Since Makita’s battery is brushless and outer rotor it seems to out perform corded saws consuming higher wattage.

@@JJhalflife It depends heavily how you use it. With full power it drains the two 5 Ah batteries relatively fast, but often not the full power is needed continuously. Typical you can use it up to half an hour with 5 Ah batteries, at least this is my experience with it.
It's great to remove branches from spruce, here the battery runtime is even longer.
In Behalf of the deactivation button, it makes a difference if you have you hand on the long button on the top of the rear handle, or not. Without it it deactivates faster than if you held it pushed with your hand on the rear grip.

Of course they make petrol chainsaws but why would you buy anything petrol based besides Stihl and Husquarna? Makita is great for battery powered but when it comes to petrol there are only 2 choices....

That would be a great saw for an Arborist who needs to get up into a tree on a rope. A lot less chance of cutting a leg.
Yours seems to cut out quite often. Mine just keeps running unless it is pinched together by the log that I am cutting.
Yea I believe that is my fault though because I thought I was pushing too hard? That's why I didn't say anything about it in the video.
Lindz 37 It's a nifty saw. I used the saw to cut down a palm tree and the saw was still able to run despite the fibres tangling up the area behind the cover. Only downside is the oil lubrication slows down a bit when that happens.
Oh yea sounds good. Yes I agree it is a very nice saw. I have other petrol saws but this one is nice for doing the littler bits and pieces, mainly because you don't need to pull start it after turning it off all the time. I find myself using it for the odd building project too instead of a skill saw where you don't need the accuracy of a cut. Cheers

@Indrek Morell Interesting. I'm thinking of doing the same thing and running of the batteries I have on my electric quad bike. Cord will be a hassle but lighter and save a lot on buying batteries. How did you wire it up? JD
@@JayDee-xj9lu There wasn't anything difficult there. I opened up the saw housing, drilled a hole in there for power wire and installed appropriate wire with socket (about 10cm). But just like that it won't start - you need to install a ~1kOhm resistor between the "-" wire and battery "check" wire (there are 3 wires behind the battery connector plate). Or was the resistor between "+" and "check" wire - cannot remember. But you can try both variants, either one should work and the saw can be started with external power source. The power wire should be 4mm2 copper, definitely not less than 2.5mm2. Currents can get up to 30+ amps there.

Read the watt hours on the bottom of your batteries. 500 watts will cut a large pickup load of 18 inch firewood. I use just a little more than two sets of 6Ah batteries for this size job. One set of these batteries is 216Wh.

Gatto Npc You can be cutting for around 20 mins to half an hour if you’re cutting smaller stuff like at the very beginning of the video. If your cutting the bigger logs, you really won’t get more than 8-10mins. Cheers

Gatto Npc yea it is perfect for lighter duty bits and pieces, for the big logs I typically use a Stihl Ms440. I’m unsure if they have a corded equivalent to the battery Makita sorry.

My new fully charged Makita 3ah batteries even unused drain themself very quickly. If I say recharged them fully last week and pop them in to work now - they show 1 out of 3 leds and last a crap
I also have Makita batteries, from 1.5 Ah over 3 Ah to 4 and 5 Ah. Not a single one had ever this problem.

No, its running with 20 m/s.
But it's safer than a gas saw, it has much less kickback (this is recognized by the electronic, which shuts down the motor in this case) than a gas saw which has more torque and no electronic.
Of course, if it cuts into a leg it makes little difference, but proper cutting protection clothes should be self-evident when chainsaws are used.
