Makita DUC353Z BATTERY chainsaw verses Stihl MS181petrol saw, power and run time test!

  • I was very dubious of a battery chainsaw...but I read a good review of a Makita battery saw...and managed to pick one up for £159 (bare) so thought why not! Heres how I got on and critically, how long the 2x5AH LXT batteries lasted. Fair to say; amazed. Awesome bit of kit!! 100% recommend! Compared to the Stihl petrol saw, its about the same length, width, height, bar length is the same, tool-less chain tensioner is the same, the Makita is marginally lighter but all in, pretty similar spec, this is just a straight fight, battery verses petrol! The makita has more torque than the stihl and never struggled once even with the larger logs I tested it on. 150 cuts on 2x5AH batteries is pretty awesome! If you are a home user...and potentially if you are a professional and have more than one set of batteries, this is a fantastic saw. I definitely will be swapping to battery, im a fully blown convert!

    I bought my Makita with 4 batteries and the dual charger.
    I get at least an hour of typical use per battery pair with a charge time of only 20 minutes. It makes cutting a pleasure.
    Needless to say, it has "most favored status" in my pole barn.

    Brilliant. They take next to no time to charge also. And so much quieter than a damn petrol chainsaw! I’m sold.

    Pretty impressive! I've just got the same saw and waiting for a pair of 5 amp Makita batteries to turn up. Looks like a good choice especially as I have various other Makita tools that take the 18 volt batteries. It's horses for courses, mains voltage Makita saw for the log shed, a petrol chainsaw for breaking my bloody wrists every winter and this battery one will be great for limbing off stuff around the fields and some logging too by the looks. Cordless is the way forward. Good video, cheers.

    I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle ruclips.net/user/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

    I used mine today I did 5 cuts on big discs of 55cm and was completely dead . I was expecting a bit better but I guess it's made for smaller stuff . I'd like to see it go up against the new 40v chainsaw

    4Ah is basically a toy, not a serious tool. Though the much higher efficiency of electric motor is able to compensate some of it as seen in video. Something like 20-30Ah battery in a packback would be a sufficient one. I did rebuild a BUC300 makita (brushed motor) chainsaw to a external 20Ah 24V battery 6 years ago and that already enabled to do some logging :) But once a while it did overheat and finally it did fry the armature (demagnetization also occured). Another great benefit accompanying external battery is the fact that the chainsaw without batter was only about 2.5kg or something and could easily be operated with one hand.

      It's a great little saw! Let us know how you get on!! I'd keep an eye on the chain oiler once you are running, mine was wound all the way in straight out the box so there was hardly any oil coming through to lubricate the chain. 👍

    Hey tom i got the same saw but the one with a tool tensioner. Havent had it long but the thing just keeps cutting out under load. Have you had any issues with yours over time ?

    • @tomchapman5761
      @tomchapman5761  3 года назад +1

      No not really. If the batteries are about empty it stops when it runs out of power but with new batteries the only time I've had it stop is when I've tried to go through a 20" dry hard stump... And it's just too big for a little saw 😂. Is it a sharp blade and are the batteries charged?

    • @busyswizzler
      @busyswizzler 3 года назад

      @@tomchapman5761 yes batteries are full and blade seems sharp, i dont really get it, it just seems like it doesnt have the power, my 50 quid aldi plug in chainsaw seems much more powerful

    speeding up the video does NOT help - I need to see the actual time it takes to cut thru - when you accelerate the video speed it invalidates the experiment
