A conscientious QC inspector like Ginger is vital to shop operations.
My shop cat Echo provides "cat scans" of my work on a regular basis. Nice to have the pro feline opinion. 😊
I haven't seen Mary Ann in a while. I hope she's OK.
I have a permanent shop cat and,a occasional shop dog
Did you see her reaction to the sharp, non-Monarch corners on the riser plate? She didn't like it!
Especially the ubiquitous kitty backside.
Ginger is absolutely confident in Keith's work, with only a passing glance.
You slip these inspectors a chicken or catnip Temptation's every once in a while and you'll be amazed at what they'll turn a blind eye to.
Keith, I am so glad to see the 1" carbide end mill being used. I paid a whopping price of $1.00 for it. I knew you would have a holder to put it to use. I see you used a rag to hold it being as it is razor sharp, and does a great job milling your tail stock base. As always, great content. Thank you. Don
The last of the big spenders.
@@peterhobson3262, Lol 😎,
To Don: Thanks for your generosity, it is being put to good use and I’m sure is appreciated. Happy New Years to all, and I hope this year brings health and happiness to all! 🎉💥🥳🇺🇸
Also under heavy load the tailstock center bends down a bit so it is better to have the tailstock center a bit high.
Actually under a heavy cut the work piece will push up on the center as the work piece tries to ride up on the cutting tool.
Absolutely love the “no measure “ method of aligning! TLBR system- that looks about right. No prints, center finder, digital map, just do it 😂. Only critique is that a round over on the outboard edges will prevent blood stains on your machine in the future 😮…. Enjoyed the process as usual, looking forward to seeing chips flying, the colors are amazing!
Now a storage place for the crank when not in use. Always something else I can find for someone else's to do list LOL
A good episode with lots of useful info and content. Best wishes for 2024.
Ginger (safety inspector) is always worried when there's some modifications to machinery.
The adaption of the tailstock is coming along nicely. The crank assembly fit and function looks really good.
Thanks for sharing.
Before you paint it...take a needle scaler to that block and dimple the snot out of the surface to make it "matchish" the cast look, maybe even do some round chamfering on the edges
Very cool addon/modification!
Keep em coming!!!!
Passing through Tifton next sunday evening too bad i dont have time or a good excuse to stop by and be
A pain. Oh well, I will wave as I roll through.
I was about to do the same to my biggest lathe, but i saw a video from the guys at Festo and had the idea to put an air feed to the thing and it worked. I can push the tailstock with a finger when the line's activated. It's a bit of a hassle cause i have it shoot some oil as well every time, but it's worth it on account on that ease of use. Before hand, i even strained my back once trying to push that behemoth.
That said, Keith here's to a fruitful 2024 and good tidings to you and yours!!!
So impressed how you can visualized the end product (result) and then do the steps to create it. Very nice result. It looks like what the Monarch people would have done. 36:08 36:08
That is a feature I wish I had on mine, it is right at the breakover point of "nice to have" and "must have."
Ginger must have had his turn with the orange cat brain cell that day 🙂. They really are smarter than most would give them credit for, and they can be real sweethearts ... or really conniving, like the one that is currently giving me the gargoyle treatment because I haven't filled the feed dish yet ... Dad would say "He isn't stupid, he's just smart enough to make you think he is."
Looking forward to finally seeing this lathe in action.
♥ the visit from your Inspector Cat 😻😸 she's very pretty 😺
I think the ohs kitty was comfortable lol
Keith, im always impressed with just how much you get done on each episode. You take on these very large projects (like the Diresta bandsaw), and im never disappointed with the progress we get to watch and the results we see. This tailstock i think has been a great example for people to see that restoration isnt always a game of exacts, but rather one of creative solutions. Plus we get to see real challenges solved with real machine tools. Whether its the upcoming castings for under the ways, or machining your 1" spacer and its land on the bottom of the tailstock, you always put together great demonstrations of machinist solutions to shop challenges. I really meant it when i said never disappointed!
Nice job, Keith. The big Monarch will be a great asset to the workshop.
Very nice mod and Happy New Year!
Please don't forget to make a new pinion gear for the rapid traverse attachment!
It would be a good time to do it while it’s fresh in your mind, it would also finish everything up on his rapid traverse attachment. Besides, everyone likes a gear making video. Lol
Nice restored tailstock , well done ☆☆☆☆☆
And happy New year wishes from the netherlands Johny geerts
It would have been nice if you had rounded the edges of the adapter block on the belt sander and textured it with a quick sand blasting to make it blend in more aesthetically with the rest of the machine.
Good suggestion, he does plan to replace that center bolt with a socket head cap screw, would be a good time to do that.
The cat noticed it, and tried to bring it to Keith's attention. It can still be fixed on a rainy day.
Looks like the spacer just fit inside the milled flat. Thought he was going to match it to the cutout.
Cat didn’t seem to approve either
And if he ever wants to make a replacement he'll have to pick up his eyeballed hole pattern instead of having some regular numbers to hit.
We need more of Ginger, the Photobombing Cat LOL
Thanks Keith...
Nice job there Keith retro fitting that tail stock
Happy New Year, Keith!
I see your QC Supervisor is earning his keep. :) He even left his stamp of approval.
The M and CM series lathes from the 40's used that same style tail stock as what you have there from what little I know of them. (I have a CM 20 with a factory cast 30" swing). From 1200 miles away it looks damn near identical. I suspect they used many common parts over the years on newer different models. Anyway looks like you will have a nice functioning tail stock no matter what flavor of lathe it came from. Cheers
Everything looks good from 1200 miles away! Lol. Happy New Years!🎉
They probably got several decades out of the casting molds for them, likely just machining more or less to match the swing of the particular model?
I just restored a Monarch 16W and am really enjoying seeing this Monarch getting fixed up. Can't wait to see it in action!
This was a good series, Happy New Year to you and all the families in internet land.
There goes the warranty!🤣🤣🤣
THANKS KIETH ,(AND GINGER) .. A PEACEFUL NEW YEAR TO ALL .
Happy New Year!
Ginger showed up just as you mentioned drilling the holes 'catty-cornered'. Coincidence? I think not - I give him full credit for suggesting the idea.
Happy New Year's Everyone 2024 🎄🎄🎄
Nice job Keith. This lathe is shaping up nicely!
Anyone want odds on the correct tailstock turning up once this one is complete?
Of course that'll happen. I misplaced my favorite tap wrench, tore the shop apart looking for it, bought a replacement, and when I was putting the new one away in a drawer I opened the wrong drawer by mistake and you all know what I found.
@@peterhobson3262 Best way to find a lost tool is to buy a replacement. Voice of experience
23:00, Keith, I see a need for a 5/8" Shoulder Cap Machine Screw, through the block. TAPPED INTO THE TAILSTOCK FOR maximum strength..? Lookin good, so far, Happy 2024 to you, and yours 😊 23:43
That bolt isn't carrying that much of a load so "maximum strength" isn't required.
Wishing you all a happy new year
Your inspector said your job is purrfect.
"That one eyed cat's not coming in, it's going out! " Benny Hill.
A nice restoration
Happy New Year to Vintage Machinery and Keitrh.
@ 11:53 And Ginger with the photobomb! Happy New Year Keith. Thanks for the videos, please keep them coming.
Great job Brother !!
Happy new year
Looking great! It will be a treat to here that beast coming up to speed and munching some chips.
Awe... Ginger The Safety Officer had to come inspect that you were following safety protocol. 😂
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I always enjoy your presentations! A admire your craftsmanship.
Happy New Year, Keith!
That is impressive. I am doing similar on a much smaller lathe and this really inspires!
Great adaption Keith; however, I think the spacer block would look a lot better if you'd "ease" the corners and outside edges. Everything else on the lathe has rounded edges.
He’ll have to charge extra for that, I think he’s trying to keep this a low cost addition. Lol
Beautiful! I love it👍👍
Happy new year to yall
Excellent.
Very good! Thank you
Brilliant!
Thank you for sharing.👍
Happy new year.
Turned out great.
Great adaption Keith. Looking forward to a fruitful New Year .

Ginger is gonna help you she’s gonna tell us all about it because she knows😂😂😂😂 she’s listened to Dad and well educated😊
Happy New Year! 2024.
Beautiful modification, Keith.
Keith Happy New Year! Another Job Well Done!
Nice job, Keith. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Good Happy New Year!😊⚙️🛠🚂👍👍👍👍✌️
Good job. You are an inspiration.
`Excellent first viewing in 2024.
Amazing attention to detail.
attention to detail would have kept the lubrication system intact...
I wish a Happy New Year to you and your family.
Very nice 👍👍👍😎😎😎
Wow, full send. I like it,New parts from old parts that don’t fit together. Thanks for sharing, very useful information and technique.
Hand drill guides are available which allow you to drill perfectly perpendicular holes.
Happy New Year, guys from Victoria Australia 🇦🇺👍🇦🇺👍🇦🇺👍
Glad everything passed Ginger's inspection
23:00 Going back a couple of centuries to the 'good ol' days when no-one cared about interchangeable parts. Not a criticism, btw, I have done the same thing myself!
33:50 Well done, Keith! For all my previous nervousness about using Turcite, you've proven me wrong. I wouldn't accept this amount of misalignment on a watchmaker's lathe, but on a big boy it will do just fine.
Happy New Year to Keith & all his loyal followers/subscribers.
KITTY!!!
Looks like the supervisor approves.
Nice job Keith looking good and you as well, I have noticed the weight loss your looking fit.
Looks good Mr. Keith! That must be part # KRM 010124 (Keith Rucker Mod +date) 🙂 Happy New Year to you!
The Monarch is on his Monarch, wondering what you are doing with the Monarch, Keith!
I do believe Keith has lost some weight, good for him! I need to do the same!
Time to repour that lead hammer Keith
I think you might want to use a reamer on the end mill, it looked a little rough on my large screen tv. I really appreciate your video's.
❤
Hypothesis: if he goes to scrape in the turcite, the inital bluing print will show heavy contact on the innermost length of the flat ways. This due to the Vee way being sloped where the turcite is applied and the turcite lifting that side of the tailstock slightly less.. then again the epoxy may have negated all of that, in fact potentially automatically fixing any deviation in flatness... things that make you go hmmm.
12:27 The eye of the tiger
Ginger the Supervisor!
Or is she a safety officer???
Happy New Year Wow you have some weight
"Gonna put the holes catty corner." Appropriate choice of words. (and Ginger agrees).
