Donnie Yen actually got to take personal Wing Chun lessons with Ip Mans son Ip Chun (back in 2008 at age 82) before the fight filming started! Ip Chun is actually still alive and teaching, currently in Hong Kong at the age of 99 years old! June 13th, 2024.
Clicked so fast. I remember randomly watching this in my dorm over 10 years ago now, not knowing anything about it. Now it's one of my favorite movies and the history is fascinating. The sequels are good too. 💕
@@naeemislam1105 Maybe the 2nd or 3rd. I'll have to rewatch the later ones sometime since I've definitely watched the first 2 movies the most lol. The first movie is still my favorite overall.
Donnie Yen fame came with Iron Monkey in 94 but since he tried to do American films in the late 90s and early 2000s, the splash was unsuccessful, he returned to Hong Kong to do Hero, Kill Zone and Flashpoint which he was a household name in China by then. Only IP Man brought the US attention back on him...
In Hong Kong action films, the stuntpersons ARE the actors, and vice versa. You'll notice that Donnie Yen or Jackie Chan will use many of the same actors in multiple movies, as they were part of their stunt teams.
I've seen this movie at least a dozen times, it's my go-to movie to introduce people to martial arts films, it has a heart and soul that transcends just having cool fight scenes, while also having some of the best fight scenes in the genre.
All four of the Ip Man movies are fantastic, I'm glad that you're checking these out. Also, take a look at Ong Bak, there are three in that series, The Raid movies, The Night Comes for Us (one of my personal favorites), Headshot, and Kill Zone, just to name a few. All proven and great movies and you will not be disappointed in any of them. Also, if you like the movies that are more historic based, House of Flying Daggers, Hero and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon some great ones to check out. And if you like a more modern movie, I have always loved the Undisputed movies, more MMA based but still fun to watch.
10:00 I’ve always watched this in Mandarin dub (I’m from Taiwan), so I never realized before until now hearing the original: the thugs spoke Mandarin but the rest of the locals spoke Cantonese, which are two different dialects that might not even understand each other. Of course, all the characters appear to communicate fine, but that shows how outlandish and disrespectful these thugs are. He just drops in and demands to fight in the rudest way, and doesn’t care if you don’t understand anything he says.
Oh you gotta check out some of Donnie’s other films outside Ip Man franchise. I recommend Flash Point, SPL: Kill Zone, Raging Fire and Hero with him and Jet Li
13:08 The feather duster dude is getting beat with is something moms at the time would use on the butts of disobedient children. Using that was a huge disrespect.
Chinese actors are the stuntmen, just in general Asian actors/actresses are trained in some form of martial arts. That’s what makes Asian cinema so good, most of the time it’s the actual actors/actresses committed to their role.
I agree that Ip Man was the start over here in the US. People started seeing his skills. But once I saw that he was in Shanghai knights and blade, it was crazy how fast I fell for him. He’s truly awesome.
Good movie series with Donnie Yen. I would also recommend Rise of a Legend, Fearless & Fist of Legend that star Jet Li. Of course, can't leave out Enter the Dragon.
Started wing chun back when I first saw this movie back when it came out. Googled my area and there was a guy a mile away teaching.. Been training ever since.

First time watcher, 2nd video attempt and loving the reaction bro. The editing i THINK you said done by your sister is spot on, thats making this a great video. Subscribing now brother, from San Juan, Texas.
@Godzillabattlezone it's the same name as wing chun. But the authentic wing chun is more use of hands for attack and defense balance but Ip man added feet/legs for attack as well. Watch the movie it's called IP man the legend is born
The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin. Just trust my Odin. One of his favorites The whole thing, is surreal, like a martial arts dream. The can’t make films like that anymore. And for modern, Everything by Takashi Miike Including 13 Assassins & Blade Of The Immortal. 🙏
In the setting of the movie, the two countries were on opposing sides of World War II. Plus they had been warring on and off for decades by this point.
3:32, i heard you said it, then looked it up. and it turns out that elder brother IS in kung fu hustle, Yanneng Shi, the coolie at the beginning. and he is also in another stephen chow's kung fu movie, adapted from that ancient chinese myth monkey king's story, Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons. some people think this movie is very random, i found it amusing and even deep sometimes unexpectedly. and i found youtube has full movie with english sub, title as Journey to the west (2013) Full movie English sub, 1:48:25.
The thug tried to insult Wing Chun style fighting (what Ip Man used) in his comment that he heard it was invented by a woman... but it WAS, according to a couple legends, including the one espoused by Ip Man himself, invented by a woman... and Ip Man was very effective with it. The absolute origin of Wing Chun is a bit of a mystery, but according to a couple of legends, it was invented by a Shaolin nun named Ng Mui as an abbreviated self-defense skillset she taught to Yim Wing-Chun to defend herself against a warlord who was trying to force her into marriage. So I imagine the Ip Man of that scene would have been thinking "yes, and?"
I love this movie I have watched the first 2 movies about 50/11times cuz I owned them on DVD. We didn't tell you about Bruce lee, because it would have been a spoiler, if you have never seen it another donie yen movie I would suggest (it was the first thing I have seen him in is" The Iron Monkey 1993".

It’s really hard to find RUclipsrs that not only react to martial art movies but to good ones! But found watching your reaction to such an epic movie was very disappointing!! You do what a lot of RUclipsrs mistakenly do!! You try to give your thoughts after every frame, after every few words, or after one sentence, instead of watching a little more then give reactions!!! And one of the biggest mistakes is you stop watching the movie and turn your head away from the movie ti talk about reactions…..for some reason like we need eye contact from you while you give your takes?!! And while you do this you miss some great action screen
Bruh, Just went from boy band singer type of thumbnails to still looking like part of that boy band & into a martial artist right after this movie reaction. Let me look pretty, while I kick & whoop you're ass boiiii! Aha.
If you want to get your film released in mainland China you have to play the game. Everything out of Hong Kong has to go through the censors in China. The real life Ip Man moved to Hong Kong in 1949 to escape not the Japanese, but the Chinese Communists. WW2 had been over for nearly five years by that point.

Yes Ip Man did train Bruce Lee. He was one of his students. This man is a legend.

Hollywood wanted Jet Li over Donny Yen during the 90's/early 2K.
I think Li had his bro's well-being in mind. By incorrectly translating what Ip Man said, he was in his own way protecting him.
All of them did do their own stunts because all of them were martial artists before they were actors.
In Hong Kong action films, the stuntpersons ARE the actors, and vice versa. You'll notice that Donnie Yen or Jackie Chan will use many of the same actors in multiple movies, as they were part of their stunt teams.
